New Treasures
A showcase of State Library of Queensland’s
recent acquisitions
New Treasures brings together more than 40
extraordinary items recently added to the State
Library’s collection – revealing how the collection
continues to grow in size, scope and diversity. The
items on display are a small part of the 100,000
acquisitions added to the collection in 2008 and 2009
and contribute to our holdings of more than 2 million
items.
The State Library builds its collection through generous
donations, acquisition, legal deposit, and commissions.
The items in New Treasures have been acquired for the
John Oxley Library, the Australian Library of Art, Music
Collection and the State Reference Library.
List of Items
All items are on display from 13 March to 15 August 2010, unless
otherwise stated. Reproductions will replace originals where
suitable duplicates or rotation items are not available for midterm
Artist Tim Mosely invited other artists to join him for an
annual collaborative gathering – the Codex Event – with the
fi nal output being an artists’ book often using the paper pulp
printing technique he developed. In 2007 the books, Port
Augusta, Nauru and Maribyrnong, were created as part of
the ‘phlight of the paper balloons’ series.
Collaborative artists involved in Codex Event 4 explored
paper balloons crossing boundaries to freedom, a metaphor
for the plight of refugees. A defl ated balloon took the form of
a book, which when opened took the shape of a boat. The
‘boats’ were named after the Australian federal government’s
detention centres used to ‘deal’ with illegal immigrants.
To mark the twentieth anniversary of his
corruption report, The Hon. GE (Tony) Fitzgerald, AC QC,
gave State Library a collection of material relating to ‘The
Fitzgerald Inquiry’. Beginning in 1987, the inquiry attracted
worldwide attention for exposing systemic corruption within
the Bjelke-Petersen government and the police force.
Fitzgerald’s report, Commission of Inquiry into Possible
Illegal Activities and Associated Police Misconduct was
published in 1989 and made over 100 recommendations
to the Queensland Parliament. The bottle states it was
commissioned by, and is dedicated to, the legal staff, police
offi cers, public servants and temporary staff who assisted
the commission. It shows Tony Fitzgerald’s signature.
Vol. 2 Brisbane Rebuilt in the Year 2200
Published in 1894 and one of the fi rst novels set in Brisbane;
The Curse and its Cure is a futuristic tale set in the year 2000
and 2200. It tells of Brisbane’s demise, due to the selfi shness
and greed of its citizens, and its subsequent resurrection.
The two fragile paper copies of this novel housed in the John
Oxley Library are possibly the only extant copies left in the
world. The Curse and its Cure was penned by Dr Thomas
Pennington Lucas, renowned for developing Lucas’ papaw
ointment which is still produced to this day.
The John Oxley Library does not
function as an art collection, but it does
collect artworks that depict Queensland. An
outstanding example is the silver medallion to commemorate
the establishment of the Ipswich branch of The Grand
United Order of Oddfellows, a friendly society dedicated
to helping individuals and their families in times of sickness
and adversity. The medallion was presented to Alexander
McLeod as founder of the Ipswich lodge. This item is
probably the oldest extant example of colonial silver with a
Queensland connection.
The top hat and neck tie was probably worn by Sir Gordon
Chalk to attend the Melbourne Cup in 1967. The top
hat was made in England for the Henry Bucks Store in
Melbourne and purchased by Brisbane optometrist, Trevor
Henderson. It was then passed on to ‘Big Bill’ Edwards,
another racing identity, who gave it to Sir Gordon Chalk. All
three have signed their names inside the hat. Sir Gordon was
Queensland Premier for one week, before Johannes Bjelke-
Petersen was elected Premier on 8 August 1968, after which
Sir Gordon became Treasurer until he retired in 1976.
