In the previous issue of the Army <strong>Space</strong><br />

Journal, a question <strong>and</strong> answer article was<br />

printed based on an interview with retired<br />

Army GEN Ed Anderson. During this interview,<br />

Anderson was also asked to comment on the<br />

theme for the current Army <strong>Space</strong> Journal,<br />

“Tapping into <strong>Space</strong>: A How-To Manual.” Here<br />

is what he had to say:<br />

<strong>Space</strong>: A How-To Manual?”<br />

Ed Anderson<br />

I would make a recommendation to the Army <strong>Space</strong> Community<br />

about enhancing the ability of our own Army folks to<br />

better draw from <strong>Space</strong> capabilities. I hesitate to go into war<br />

stories but, in Vietnam we had Forward Air Controllers (FAC)<br />

– it wasn’t just during Vietnam, because the Army had them for<br />

a long time beforeh<strong>and</strong>. They were Air Force pilots who were<br />

part of Army organizations out in combat zones hoping to get<br />

a call for fire or other aide. The point was it gave that pilot an<br />

idea of what the situation was on the ground that he was responsible<br />

for supporting.<br />

My thought is we should try to work with the Air Force to<br />

bring together <strong>Space</strong> FACs <strong>and</strong> put them in our Army <strong>Space</strong><br />

Support Teams or maybe our <strong>Space</strong> Support Elements <strong>and</strong> take<br />

them downrange in Iraq <strong>and</strong> Afghanistan to let them see what<br />

it is that our folks need to use <strong>Space</strong> for. At the same time, our<br />

folks can then learn from them as to what folks who are flying<br />

these satellites are doing back here in terms of responding<br />

to their needs. The combination I think leads to a much better<br />

underst<strong>and</strong>ing of what’s doable in terms of requirements,<br />

future requirements for capabilities, etc. That would be something<br />

that I would recommend as a way ahead for the Army ...<br />

to partner with the Air Force <strong>and</strong> do this in a truly Joint way on<br />

the ground. Usually when we think of <strong>Space</strong>, we think about up<br />

there, we don’t always think down here. We need to start thinking<br />

about it in that way.<br />
