War <strong>of</strong> Words, <strong>the</strong> first exhibition <strong>of</strong> our year-long <strong>the</strong>me<br />

Battle, explores ideas <strong>of</strong> conflict as filtered through <strong>the</strong> notso-precise<br />

lens <strong>of</strong> language.<br />

It includes Yes or No, a collaborative work created by artists<br />

sending responses to build a wall full <strong>of</strong> Yes or No artworks.<br />

The San Francisco Center for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Book</strong>’s 9th Annual<br />

Roadworks: A Steamroller Printing Festival!<br />

Saturday, September 22, 2012, 12-5pm on Rhode Island<br />

Street between 16th and 17th Streets, San Francisco<br />

The San Francisco Center for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Book</strong>’s annual Roadworks<br />

Street Fair is a day-long public printmaking showcase<br />

presented amid a selection <strong>of</strong> local food and fine craft<br />

vendors. Using a three-ton construction steamroller and<br />

an unlikely letterpress bed - Rhode Island Street - a team<br />

<strong>of</strong> artists and printers print large-scale prints from threefoot-square<br />

hand-carved linoleum blocks. Now in its 9th<br />

year, Roadworks has become a casual, popular tradition in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Potrero Hill neighbourhood, drawing printmaking and<br />

book art enthusiasts as well as locals and families. Events for<br />

children will be scheduled all day. Free tours <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Austin/<br />

Burch Gallery, plus free letterpress, bookbinding, and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

mini-workshops will be <strong>of</strong>fered at SFCB during <strong>the</strong> festival.<br />

The gallery-quality steamroller prints will be for sale at<br />

SFCB during a special preview hour prior to <strong>the</strong> event;<br />

limited quantities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> prints will be available at <strong>the</strong> event<br />

itself. The steamroller prints are highly limited editions, so<br />

if you are interested in <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> a specific featured artist,<br />

quandaries (Paper Bags series 1) were collected into a<br />

book published by seekers <strong>of</strong> lice which is in several public<br />

collections, including <strong>the</strong> collection <strong>of</strong> Artists’ <strong>Book</strong>s at Tate<br />

Britain.<br />

The texts from LOUSE FACTORY (Paper Bags series 2) will<br />

be included in a book <strong>of</strong> play scripts by seekers <strong>of</strong> lice, to be<br />

published in <strong>the</strong> autumn by VerySmallKitchen.<br />
