The Seventh Manchester Artist’s <strong>Book</strong> Fair<br />

Friday 12th and Saturday 13th October 2012<br />

Manchester School <strong>of</strong> Art, UK<br />

Hot Bed Press, in association with Manchester Metropolitan<br />

<strong>University</strong>, will be hosting <strong>the</strong> Seventh Manchester Artists’<br />

<strong>Book</strong> Fair. This year <strong>the</strong> fair will be held over two days,<br />

Fri 12th and Sat 13th October, and will take place as usual<br />

in <strong>the</strong> Holden Gallery at <strong>the</strong> Manchester School <strong>of</strong> Art.<br />

Admission Free. The book fair will coincide with and be a<br />

part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Manchester Weekender, <strong>of</strong>fering participants<br />

and visitors alike a wide range <strong>of</strong> extra entertainments,<br />

including literary, science and comedy festivals. We will also<br />

be holding a range <strong>of</strong> drop-in bookarts sessions at Hot Bed<br />

Press during <strong>the</strong> preceding week.<br />

MMU Special Collections at <strong>the</strong> Sir Kenneth Green library<br />

will be open as usual during <strong>the</strong> fair, for people to view <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

beautiful collection <strong>of</strong> artists’ books, Friday until 5pm and<br />

on Saturday midday-4pm.<br />

We have arranged with Special Collections to hold a<br />

presentation by a selection <strong>of</strong> well-known book artists:<br />

Collaboration and <strong>the</strong> Democracy <strong>of</strong> <strong>Book</strong> <strong>Arts</strong>. This will<br />

take place on <strong>the</strong> Friday between 10am and 1pm. It will be<br />

introduced by Anthony Ratcliffe, whose latest exhibition <strong>of</strong><br />

prints will be on show at <strong>the</strong> library, and will <strong>the</strong>n comprise<br />

a talk by each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bookarts speakers – Sarah Bodman,<br />

Nancy Campbell, Susan Kruse, Michelle Rowley and Angie<br />

Butler - about <strong>the</strong>ir book arts projects and collaborative<br />

practice, followed by a short period <strong>of</strong> discussion and any<br />

questions from <strong>the</strong> audience. Tickets cost £10, if you are<br />

There will also be two events in Special Collections on<br />

Saturday: drop-in family book-making session (free,<br />

aimed at children) running from midday to 1pm, and for<br />

adults, an introduction to and tour <strong>of</strong> Special Collections’<br />

own artists’ books, 2.30-3.30pm, free but bookable, as<br />

numbers will be limited. Closely related events as part <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Manchester Weekender - Not content with running<br />

<strong>the</strong> book fair on Friday and Saturday, Hot Bed Press is also<br />

involved up to <strong>the</strong> hilt with The Radical Printshop. This<br />

will involve Hot Bed Press members spending <strong>the</strong> next<br />

few months screenprinting, risographing, letterpressing<br />

and o<strong>the</strong>rwise producing protest posters, political rants<br />

and generally making <strong>the</strong>ir opinions felt on paper. The<br />

products <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir fervour will <strong>the</strong>n form <strong>the</strong> backdrop to<br />

screenprinting workshops at The People’s History Museum,<br />

followed by letterpress sessions at The John Rylands Library.<br />

XVth International <strong>Book</strong> Project in Marseilles<br />

13th & 14th October 2012<br />

Entrance is free and open to <strong>the</strong> public between<br />

10am - 7pm. Center <strong>of</strong> Vieille Charité 13001- Marseilles<br />

95 selected artists & publishers from 8 countries for<br />

two days in Marseilles. A curated exhibition and book<br />

fair showcases <strong>the</strong> best artists’ books to an international<br />

audience, to attract private and public special collections<br />

and establish a networking event for creative practitioners.<br />

Special Invitation: The teaching <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> publishing <strong>of</strong> artists’<br />

books in some international universities: 4 countries invited<br />

/ 16 universities represented. Editioned and unique artists’<br />

books display original etchings, drypoints, woodcuts,<br />

linocuts, letterpress, embossing, bookbinding, ceramics,<br />

photographs, paintings, drawings, and paper engineering.<br />

Edition <strong>of</strong> a book lavishly illustrated in colour, with texts<br />

from university pr<strong>of</strong>essors and artists. 120 pages. 500 copies.<br />
