Ahhh … Spring! New Beginnings for AWCT!
H
ow great it is to see the days grow longer and
nature beginning to regain its colors. We, too,
feel a kind of rebirth, and as the 2005-2006 AWCT
Board heads toward the culmination of our club
year, I reflect on some of our accomplishments.
Thanks to the tremendous teamwork of our very
capable Board, as well as our general membership,
we are looking very healthy. Here are the
facts: this year we were able to get a clear picture
of our finances by adding some new software,
cutting our operating costs, collecting money owed
us, increasing advertising and successful fundraising.
I am pleased to announce that we no longer
have to consider moving from our office in the near
future. However, we are always planning for the
future and have our eyes open for additional ways
to cut operating costs and improve our Club’s
benefits. Thanks go to some very special people
who worked on this project: Debbie Mata, Treasurer,
Stella Kristofferson, Office Manager, Cindy
Kauppila, Membership Coordinator, April Taylor,
Fall Fest Coordinator, Kathryn Dunne and Laura
Blair Johnson, Newsletter Co-Editors, Leslie Eirich,
Secretary, Kharmie Neal and Bettina Buchriser,
Mother’s Corner Coordinators, as well as all of our
activities heads. It continues to be my privilege to
work with all the AWCT volunteers.
Resume / CV Building
V
ery few jobs allow flexible hours, opportunities
to work from home, open creativity, or accepts
your child sitting in on a board or committee meeting.
However, working for the AWCT does! The
thought of re-entry into the workforce can be terrifying
for some, especially after a year or two abroad
or at-home raising a family. Preparing yourself for
that upcoming interview (short- or long-term) is not
an overnight occurrence, but rather an ongoing
process. Filling the “gap” in your resume is most
certainly necessary, and unfortunately, those German
language lessons only buy so much (or shall
I say little) time with a potential employer. This is
where the AWCT fits in. Stay with me, and read on.
Our upcoming Club elections are quickly approaching,
but it is not too late to consider getting more
involved with the AWCT. We are still seeking
candidates for this year’s election, and we have
numerous open general board positions. In addition,
we will take nominations from the floor this
month at the Luncheon (see Page 6). Job sharing
(i.e., co-chairing) is not only viable, but also favorable
because of our members’ travel schedules.
Our Charity Guest Speakers are writing and
rewriting their speeches to perfect the exact
words of gratitude they have for all of us. It is
important for them that we understand how
desperate they need help and what exactly
they need from the AWCT.
It would be the honor of the Social Committee
to inform you that our three guest speakers for
the Black Tie Bingo will be:
– Head Doctor from the Frankfurt-Hochst Childrens
Hospital: PD Dr. L Scholz
– The Department Head of Social Programs
in Oberursel: Peter Hartmann
– Director of the “Integration Program for Foreign
Children in Oberursel: Wolfgang
Schops.
(do not worry, their speech will be short, and
you can get back to your fun in no time!)
And WHY are we doing this event????????
Some of The Black Tie Bingo Committee
members had the opportunity to visit the
Frankfurt-Hochst Children’s Hospital. It was
a very emotional 2 hours. During this time
we walked through the neo-natal ward and
the Childrens’ ward. The wards were decorated
with handmade cartoon characters
that the nurses had made on their own time
with their own money, hoping to make the
children feel more comfortable and less stressful.
The babies were covered in hand quilted
bankets (made by volunteers), so that the
parents felt better and that it was more of a
personal touch than the regular white clinical
blanket. Our attention was brought to a baby
that weighed ONLY 1 kilo. He was in an
incubator hooked up to many monitors. Only
a few of what the hospital really needs. We
were shown the old incubators that were not
sound proof or could not be temperature controlled
which were mostly used by the hospital.
Then we saw the new incubators which
are; soundproof, temperature controlled and
fully monitored for the nurses, however these
are unfortunately few and far between at
Hochst. One new incubator has a value of
10,000 Euros. This is just one of the items that
the hospital so desperately needs. They require
computer monitors which are 5,000
Euros each, something they could not imagine
without donations.
The Integration Program for Foreign Children
in Oberursel was founded 30 years ago. It
formed after an earthquake in Italy forced
many displaced children to relocate , many
here in Oberursel. It was then that the ladies
of the city came together and started a “non
professional” charity. Working together, they
taught these children the German language
and cultures as well as providing counseling
where needed. It wasn’t long before the hard
work paid off and the children were not only
accepted into the community but felt a part of
it. Today, the Integration Program is a little
more professional and structured. It has over
40 children representing 12 different nations.
As soon as one of these foreign children start
school they continue until they have graduated
and obtained a full time job. The school day
for these children does not end until 5pm.
After their regular school they are required
to attend the program from 1pm until 5pm.
The program is constantly evolving, including
additional counseling for the child
and family members. If the family is in a crisis
(e.g., employment is lost), it will help with
career counseling and ways in which how not
to “rely on the social system”. This program
brings the children a feeling of self-worth and
self-esteem, something that you can not put
a price on. It is believed that these types of
programs aid in the prevention of social unrest
similar to the riots that took place in Paris this
summer.
“American-style” Products
T
his past holiday season I found myself baking
tray after tray of chocolate chip and oatmealraisin
cookies to distribute among my neighbors as
a thank you for unexpected gifts they gave my
young daughter. They all loved them, and most of
them came back saying, “You MUST give me the
recipe for those cookies. They are absolutely fantastic!!”
Since I am in the (Italian) cooking business
I felt ashamed to tell them that those cookies were
made (God forbid!) from a package and not from
scratch as one would expect from me. I managed
to save my reputation by saying that the recipe is a
family secret and by promising to bake them again
soon.
The truth is that it is IMPOSSIBLE (at least for me)
to make “American” cookies from scratch using
ingredients found in the German supermarkets.
Believe me, I have tried and ended up with a giant
gooey-ish oatmeal-raisin cookie instead of a dozen
cute little round ones.
After talking about this baking fiasco to a couple
of American friends, we established that the problem
is the flour. In Germany they use regular flour
plus baking soda as a raising agent. In the States
one can buy flour that incorporates the raising
agent or all-purpose flour (similar to the German
‘405’ Weizmehl). And this is just the tip of the
iceberg…
When I first moved here, about eight years ago,
I would go to the supermarket for my weekly
grocery shopping and come home with my bags full
of stuff that was advertised as ‘American style,’
only to throw it out or give it to my male colleagues
(they would eat anything that looked even slightly
homemade!), because it was NOT American style
at all. One example is the mix for muffins: they
vaguely resemble the shape of mini-muffins on the
box, but the final result is NOTHING like the real
thing.
This is just to erase all of your hopes of being able
to find here the same things you are used to in
the States. The only way to get around this is to
know someone who works in one of the American
Army bases in the Rhein-Main area or pay very
high prices (almost 6 Euros for a box of Pop
Tarts!!) in one of the local supermarkets’ International
Food section (Kaufhof and Karstadt in downtown
Frankfurt and some of the bigger MiniMal
stores). The British have it easier – at least they
can go to the British Shop on Oeder Weg to find
their Marmite…
But this does not mean that you won’t be able
to feed your family while living in Germany. Quite
the opposite: in fact, you may even end up finding
new favorite recipes or products. The supermarkets
offer quite a big selection of perishables and
non-perishable products. In the bigger street
markets you will usually find a great offer of fresh
produce, cheese, bread and pastries, fish, meat
and sausages, pickles, flowers and the odd bits
and pieces.
But before going shopping I would recommend you
prepare a shopping list in English and German. In
the long run this will help you to learn new words,
and therefore the feeling of despair that you may
experience at the thought of going grocery shopping
will disappear!
To make my shopping list I have found an online
English-German dictionary really helpful (http://
dict.tu-chemnitz.de/). It also has a conversion section
that will help you translate all different types of
measurements from US to European standards.
The conversions page is accessed through the
Services options at the top of the page under the
selection boxes.
I also have a long printed list of names of spices in
both languages that I would be happy to fax or mail
to you if you would like to have it. You can e-mail me
at la-cucina@gmx.net or call me at 01520 3628033
for any question you may have.
Happy shopping (and cooking)!
Fast Family Meals – Gobs of Gouda
L
ife’s too short to eat lousy food, but who has time
to prepare great meals from scratch all the
time? When there’s a will, there’s a way, and I found
the way with cheese. It tastes great on or with so
many dishes and has proved to be a favorite staple
in our family diet.
My cheese of choice here in Germany is a young
Gouda. It’s healthy, it grates easily, melts well, and
it’s cheap. (I buy the big blocks at Aldi’s for € 3,99
a Kilo.) Gouda is a great substitute for the more
expensive cheddar or Swiss cheeses and it keeps
in the fridge for months.
Classic Macaroni & Cheese
Move over Kraft, this version is healthier (we KNOW
what’s in it!) and the kids just love it!
(serves at least four hungry teenagers)
2 tbsps. butter
1 medium onion, finely diced (optional)
2 tbsps. flour
2 cups milk (easier if the milk is warm)
1 red pepper, chopped (optional)
400 grams of grated gouda
Salt & pepper to taste
400 grams elbow macaroni, cooked al dente
www.awctaunus.org
Melt butter in a medium-sized saucepan. Add onion
and sauté until tender. Whisk in flour and keep
whisking for 1 full minute. Gradually add milk,
whisking constantly. Simmer gently until mixture
thickens (about 5 minutes). Add cheese, continue
whisking until melted. Add red pepper. Add cheese
mixture to hot pasta and serve immediately – OR –
for a thicker version, turn mixture into a greased
casserole dish and bake at 350 F (about 175 C) for
about 20 minutes.
Uitsmijters (pronounced “outsmyders”)
This is basically a Dutch grilled-cheese-ham-andegg
sandwich (My husband, whose mother is
from Holland, makes this often on lazy Sunday
evenings.)
(The ingredients here are per single serving – it’s
just as simple to make four servings as it is to make
one.)
2 slices dark heavy bread (like the German rye
(Roggenbrot) or Wheat (Weizenbrot, Bauernbrot
or Krustenbrot)
2 slices ham
4 thin slices of fresh tomato
4 slices gouda cheese
1 or 2 eggs
While assembling all the ingredients, toast the
bread. Place ham and tomato on toast and broil
about 7 inches away from the grill at 175 C for about
three minutes. Add cheese on top and continue
broiling. As soon as the cheese toasts are in the
oven, start frying the eggs (sunny-side-up). When
the cheese is melted, top each toast with one or two
eggs. Serve immediately with salt & pepper. Eet
smakelik! (enjoy! In Dutch)
Raclette
Raclette is simply melted cheese served over boiled
potatoes with some pickled vegetables. (The name
comes from the French verb “racler”, to scrape,
because of the way the melted cheese is scraped
off the block.)
Raclette cheese is sold in all major supermarkets.
(Either from France or Switzerland, the Swiss version
is milder. Of course, the big chunk of Gouda in
the back of my fridge works just as well!)
This is not actually a recipe, but a description – it’s
so easy. All you need is a raclette grill. (I bought
mine at Aldi’s years ago for less than € 20.) Once
you have a grill and the ingredients, just call in the
family or invite some friends. The beauty of it all is
that most of us can enjoy raclette with whatever we
have in our fridge and pantry!
Time:
Whatever it takes to cook the potatoes.
Ingredients:
Small potatoes (baby potatoes are easiest), boiled
in salt water (Slices of crusty bread, although not
authentic, work well too.).
200-250 grams of cheese per person.
Small gherkins, pickled onions, baby corns, marinated
paprika (and whatever you have in the pantry).
a selection of cold cuts- ham, prosciutto, turkey roll,
etc.
sliced fresh peppers (optional), tomatoes, onions,
mushrooms, etc.
Basically almost anything goes – so let your imagination
take over.
Procedure:
Each diner pops a slice of cheese into his/her tray
(with some vegetable, if desired). At the same time
the diner can nosh on other veggies and warm up
some meat on the top grill. When the cheese is
bubbling, scrape the contents on top of a potato.
Add some condiments. Eat. Repeat. Enjoy.
Jean Meier-Bölinger’s Quiche
(Jean brought this to a gathering a few months ago,
and I have to admit it’s better than mine!)
Pastry dough (Blätterteig) to roll out (available in
the refrigerator section from Frankfurt City Kaufhof)
(Note: a rectangular Blätterteig is available in
Aldi’s and Minimal.)
75 grams of ham (Jean recommends Aldi’s Be-Lite
Gourmet Schinken or the Schwarzwalder smoked
ham cut up into small pieces.)
4 large eggs – 5 if small
2 cups (500ml) of heavy cream (Sahne).
Sometimes broccoli or chopped scallions, if on
hand.
Pinch of cayenne pepper, lots of ground mixed
pepper.
Grated cheese (Jean doesn’t measure it and uses
whatever she has- about a cup of gouda, cheddar,
etc.).
Fresh basil (optional) for decoration.
Lay dough (with paper) on a large quiche platter.
Sprinkle ham/broccoli/scallions all over. Mix eggs,
cream and pepper and pour over. Sprinkle cheese
over all.
Bake at 200° C for 15 minutes, then down to 180° C
for about 45 minutes until crust is golden brown and
filling is set.
Let cool for a few minutes out of the oven, then pull
the paper out. Voila! ■
Love The Skin You’re In This product is now used where you have deep
O
ur skin is the largest organ of the body, and our
first line of defense against the cruel, outside
world. Most of us do not take the best care of our
skin until it is too late. Then we try to find a magic
potion or pill to undo all the damage.
Most people agree that as we reach our forties we
should see a dermatologist once a year for an allover
body check for suspicious moles and precancerous
growths. Through AWCT’s CARE program
you can find a qualified dermatologist in your
area that speaks English and has been referred by
other members.
Dr. Daniela Greiner, a CARE referred dermatologist
in Oberursel, has given us some ideas about
new advances in skin care, special needs for your
skin while living in Germany and some of her
favorite products. Dr. Greiner is excited about
some of the treatments that are available in her
praxis.
“We are seeing a greater ability to place Botox
injections and correct doses. There is more than 10
years of constant use of this product and the end
results are now much better than previously,” she
said. “ Mesotherapy has been around Europe for
some time but is now being done in the United
States. It involves micro injections of vitamins and
amino acids into the mesoderm (the middle layer of
the skin.) It can be used to improve the appearance
of wrinkles or breakdown fat cells. The new uses of
vitamin A, C, E and alpha hydroxy acid are being
used to cause scaling and removal of the corneal
layer of skin giving the skin a more youthful appearance.”
New materials are being used for filling wrinkles
and skin imperfections. You may have heard of
Rystylane, Perlane or hyaluronic acid. But have
you heard of Sculptra? This product has been used
for years as a component of dissolving sutures and
binds with water in the body to product collagen.
Questions About Wine???
Are you lost when you read a German wine label?
Do you think that all German wines are sweet? Do
you know what trocken, halb trocken, Spatlese,
Auslese, Kabinett, or Beerenauslese mean? Are
you interested in learning how to pick a wine to go
with that great dinner you made? Kerry Brady from
the German Wine Academy is pleased to present
a short informative seminar and tasting at the March
luncheon. Make sure you RSVP, you will definitely
not want to miss this! ■
www.awctaunus.org
wrinkles and severe scars. Most other fillers are for
shallow areas of the skin that need to be evened
out.
So what is the secret to beautiful skin? Dr. Greiner
suggests moisturizing day and night, using a sunscreen
of at least 20 SPF, and cleansing the skin
with a non-soap product of ph 5.5. The reason for
not using soap is simple: an alkaline, soap causes
an imbalance that can irritate the skin. One great
cream is Physiogel. This product has no preservatives,
perfumes, and is ph 5.5. Some of Dr. Greiner’s
favorite products are by Roche-Possey, Vichy
and LED. She suggests finding the product that
suits your skin type and stick with it.
“Too many people are swayed by advertising and
switch products too often,” she said. All of these
products are available at your local pharmacy and
are reasonably priced.
When it comes to skin care and skin care treatments
you need to proceed with caution and rely on
a dermatologist that you can trust. Keep yourself
informed and stay out of the sun. ■
Mother’s Corner March
O
ne of the reasons why Mother’s Corner is such
a successful and fun group is because of the
volunteer participation from our members within
our Mother’s Corner Committee!
It is vital that the committee positions are filled in
order to continue the great monthly activities, the
seasonal parties and all the other features. There
is a lot of behind-the-scenes work that is done on
the Mother’s Corner Committee itself to ensure the
events are organized and run smoothly. We are
looking for enthusiastic and energetic members to
fill three immediate openings:
Treasurer – We are looking for an enthusiastic
mom to look after our finances (bank account). You
don’t have to be an accountant. Except for trying to
attend monthly MC meetings, you can do most of
the work from home. Tasks include paying out
members’ expenses, preparing the quarterly overview
(currently prepared in Excel), and handing
over statements and invoices to the tax advisor.
Since the tax advisor is located in Bad Homburg
and many of our parties/activities as well as
the garage sale are held in the area, it might
be an advantage to live there. If you’re interested,
please contact Kirsten von Wuthenau
(kirsten@wuthenau.de; tel: 06172-177839) with
any questions you might have.
Party Chair – lead the team planning the three
annual children’s parties.
Activities Chair – work with the activities team to
organize one children’s and one moms’ activity
every month.
These are also very important positions within
the Committee. Please contact Kharmie Neal
(chrisandkharmie@t-online.de; Tel. 06174-
969729) or Bettina Buchrieser (caelan.inc@tonline.de;
tel. 06131-676993) if you are interested.
We can provide more detailed job descriptions of
each of the positions and would love a chance to
discuss with you how you could help Mother’s
Corner remain such a successful and fun group in
coats and jackets on hangers. These hangers
are unable to be returned to you. Attach labels
small, stick-on labels just do not stay on. Safety
pins may be used, but not dressmaker‘s straight
pins and no staples. WE ACCEPT NO RESPONSI-
BILITY FOR MISSING LABELS.
Items to be sold must be dropped off on Friday, 17th March, between 2 and 4 pm at the Bürgerhaus
Here is how the selling works. You will receive a
sales number. This is to be written on all items you
wish to sell. Please place a large red spot on the
labels of all items you wish to donate to charity
should they not sell. Be careful to not use a red pen
which will go through the label and stain the item to
be sold. Unfortunately we cannot accept beds/cots
for charity.
Seller numbers are limited. TO RECEIVE A
SALES NUMBER, CALL PATRICIA BAR-
THOLOMEW at 06172 2872956 or e-mail:
What’s on in March
I
have to admit, I was not overly enthusiastic when
I read my description as “a senior British lady.”
However, after hearing the reason why, I was
mollified. It happened like this. I had gone to the
Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof to meet a couple whom I
have known for years. They had been travelling
around Europe by train and were making a stop in
Frankfurt. I saw them get down from the train and
saw, also, a rather large pile of suitcases. They will
need a trolley, I thought. This was exactly the
thought of my friends. We searched high and low in
the station and found none, also no porters. It was
all very frustrating and physically tiring (we had to
lug the cases under our own steam.) When the
couple returned home (Belgium), Peter wrote a
letter to the Deutsche Bahn. … “my wife and I
arrived at Frankfurt HBH from Nürnburg (first class)
… we could find no luggage-carts …we are seniors,
I am 85.5 years ‘young’ … only after a senior
British lady offered to help us, we managed to get
to the exit of the station with our 5 pieces of
luggage.” I had to contain a smile; it is true that
Peter is 85.5 but his wife is more than 20 years
younger. I had actually gone to meet them, rather
than, as he indicated, coincidentally passing by.
But I don’t mind. In order to get a point across, you
sometimes have to exaggerate and it is certainly
true that there were no trolleys available. If the
letter helps to make travelling easier for people in
the future, I will put up with “a senior British lady.”
(I really don’t know why I object to it anyway; British
I am. I hope I am a lady, and senior, well, I am no
spring chicken.) And, by the way, Peter did get a
reply from the German Railways. Apparently, it is
aware of the problem, but the trolleys which have
been provided keep disappearing. They just
vanish. Now the Bahn is trying to think of other
methods of transporting luggage.
A sign of spring: the hour goes forward on Sunday,
appeals to all those with green fingers. A
from Frankfurt. In 1600, he travelled to Rome and
in the short time left to him, he made a deep
impression on his contemporaries. He became
known as “Adamo Tedesco” and because of his
dramatic light effects, narrative diversity, and poetic
charm in his work he inspired such artists as
Rubens and Rembrandt.
Visit to the Alsatian pottery village of Soufflenheim
followed by shopping at the CORA hypermarket in
Mundolsheim, near Strasbourg. www.confrerie.net.
Since we first did this popular trip several years
ago, it has to be said that the range of food,
particularly American, British, Asian, Tex-Mex, etc.
specialties has vastly improved at the local HL,
MiniMal, Tengelmann, Edeka and other supermarkets.
But … this is something different. CORA is situated
in France and the range of cheese and dairy
products, fresh fish, fruit and vegetables is superb.
And the Wine section reaches as far as the eye can
see. For around Euro 6/bottle one is absolutely
spoilt for choice. Want to know more / join in?
The Bridge To Your Partners
Interview with Mr. Günther Schwinn-Zur, Director of the
Goethe-Institute, Frankfurt.
Did you know that German is the native language of
more than 100 million people and the most commonly
spoken language in the European Union? Johann
Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), the famous son of
Frankfurt and world citizen, would be proud of the
worldwide Goethe-Institute, existing now with 130 organizations
in 80 countries offering comprehensive
and excellent programs to the international community
at a very high level. People from all over the world are
taking the opportunity to use the language as a bridge
to the world of history, arts, and cultures, as well as to
business, science, and technology. In addition to the
literary work Goethe left for us and the world to come,
he contributed significantly to science and biology. He
already creatively realized his visions during his time.
He stressed the fact that one of the important keys to
global understanding is the language which facilitates
life and helps to overcome cultural and other differences.
It was very interesting for me to take a closer look at the
Frankfurt Goethe-Institute at a “live” class experience.
I even met AWCT-Member Sarah Happel preparing her
upcoming speech and her classmates from Italy,
Greece, Russia, the Czech Republic, and Korea. The
teacher, Mrs. Angelika Goedeking, introduced the various
subjects for the week and mentioned that the class
also meets in a casual atmosphere once a week outside
the institute in a restaurant for a “Stammtisch” or at
cultural and business locations of interest to gain more
practical experience. Many long-lasting friendships
have already developed this way. During my interview
with the Director of the Frankfurt Goethe-Institute, Mr.
Günther Schwinn-Zur, he mentioned that the impressive
building of the Goethe-Institute in Sachsenhausen
is a former post office. Participants may leave their
children in the care of the Institute’s friendly kindergarten.
Several interesting exhibitions, a cafeteria, a library,
and the mediatek are also offered in a very
inviting atmosphere.
When and why was the Goethe-Institute founded?
The Goethe-Institute was re-founded after World War II
in 1951. It existed before as a similar organization. The
first ones were established by idealists to present
Germany in the world with all its positive facets. Language
courses were offered and foreign teachers were
invited to Germany to be trained and specialized.
Institutes in the Munich area offered language boarding
schools, very much different from today. Nowadays
young people prefer to live in large cities. The Frankfurt
Goethe-Institute will celebrate its 25th anniversary next
year!
How did the inspiring idea develop to name it
“Goethe-Institute”?
This is a question we are asked very often. Many people
think it might as well be called Max-Mueller or Friedrich-
Schiller-Institute. Goethe, the generalist and world citizen,
was selected as the most and best-known German
novelist, poet, humanist, scientist, and philosopher,
acknowledged worldwide.
How many Goethe-Institutes exist worldwide?
At present, we have 130 Institutes worldwide and 14 in
Germany. In some countries, we maintain information
centers. Last year we opened a reading center in North
Korea. Our President, Prof. Dr. Jutta Limbach, attended
the opening. It is quite interesting to have a center
over there by contract, free and open for everybody to
Director of the Goethe-Institut Günther Schwinn-Zur
use for information and exhibitions about the Western
world. This way, the Goethe-Institute influences political
situations, positively adding to mutual understanding.
The cultural dialogue and international exchange
are very important. We do not only export culture, but
want to cooperate with other countries.
How does the Goethe-Institute assist foreigners
abroad?
The Goethe-Institute is the largest mediator organization
of the Federal Republic of Germany. The main
three tasks are transmitting the language. We are still
the most important institution for training teachers of the
German language in foreign countries. Second are our
various cultural activities and cultural exchanges, i.e.
art, ballet, music, films, theater, etc. We always act in
cooperation with our partners. Third, we offer information
centers and librarires like the example in North
Korea mentioned earlier. In my opinion, the latter are
not so important in large cities like Paris, London, or
Tokyo, because there are numerous other possibilities
for information. In third world countries, the information
centers operate as a meeting point for intercultural
exchange as well.
Does the Goethe Institute act as a publisher?
No, we do not have our own publishing house, but you
can assume that the majority of specialist and teaching
literature was developed in cooperation with the Goethe-
Institute. You will discover numerous authors from the
Goethe-Institute. Naturally, in addition, we hand out
information brochures and material concerning the
Federal Republic of Germany not on a commercial
basis.
Does the Goethe-Institute cooperate with other
organizations?
We do not only cooperate in foreign countries but also
work together with European partner organizations
here in Germany, i.e. Institut Francais, Instituto Cervantes,
Amerika Haus. An important institution is also
DAAD (Deutsch Akademischer Austauschdienst). They
send many scholarship holders to our institutes. More
or less, all foundations are our partners, as, for example,
the Humboldt-Stiftung and the Herbert-Quandt-
Stiftung, which is also very active, i.e. their program
recently included a combined interesting event dialogue
between cultures. The Herbert-Quandt Stiftung
offered young journalists the opportunity to volunteer
with ZDF and Deutsche Welle.
What are the future programs and projects worldwide?
Our main concern still is the dialogue between cultures.
Prof. Jutta Limbach stressed the importance especially
regarding a changing world and situations during the
past years. We are convinced that the only way to find
solutions is if we talk to each other, referring to human
rights.
How does the Institute manage financially?
The Goethe-Institutes depend mainly on public funds in
foreign countries. Unfortunately, we have had to close
some in the past. In Germany, the 14 institutes are
commercially independent. As the institutes are not
subsidized, we have to work very efficiently on spending
the amounts we have. We mainly focus on language
courses in groups or individual courses on various
levels, half day, full day, and super intensive courses.
Our students do not sit in classrooms all day long but
are able to improve their knowledge in action outside as
well. The Verein der Freunde und Förderer des Goethe-
Instituts Frankfurt e.V. supports our cultural events
financially, either by personal or legal entity membership,
like institutions or companies, i.e. IHK Chamber of
Commerce and Frankfurter Sparkasse.
How many nations are represented in the Frankfurt
Goethe Institute?
Well, we have 40 to 50 nations each day in the house.
We are sure that we have the largest group of people
interested in learning German in a peaceful atmosphere.
It is very interesting to have a look at all the
countries. The majority of students come from the
United States. The second largest group is Japanese.
I think this has mainly to do with Frankfurt being a
European banking capital. Managers, representatives
of large companies, actually people from many other
different professions attend the Goethe-Institute in
groups or individually. If you consider “old Europe,” of
course, there is a large group from Spain, France, Italy,
Scandinavia, etc.
What is the average size of a course here in Frankfurt?
In the Rhein-Main area, we are specialized in serving
the international commercial and banking metropolis
Frankfurt. Most of our participants are in the economic
field. In that way, the Frankfurt Institute differs from
other Goethe-Institutes in Germany. A maximum of 8 to
10 students attend one course. We avoid a school-like
atmosphere, i.e. the teacher does not stand at a pulpit
teaching in front but is integrated in the group.
What are the requirements to teach at a Goethe-
Institute?
The first requirement is an academic degree. German
has to be your mother tongue in Germany, not a
requirement in foreign countries. You must have an
additional language degree from the university, “Deutsch
als Fremdsprache,” and you must prove respective
teaching experience.
How many people are on the Frankfurt team altogether?
About 40 teachers, a mix of employees and freelancers,
and six employees work in the administration.
When did you join the Goethe-Institute?
www.awctaunus.org
Eighteen years ago. I was a professional high school
teacher and taught for several years after finishing my
studies before joining the Goethe-Institute.
How do you cooperate and exchange within your
worldwide network?
We have the “Personalverbund.” Anybody who works
in Frankfurt can transfer worldwide as we are one
company. The head office is in Munich with special
departments working closely together.
What is most important in your daily work routine?
To secure the work of the Institute in Frankfurt and all
over Germany; more than a fulltime job!
Do you offer special youth programs?
Yes, in summer we offer courses for young students 10
to 12, 12 to 14, 15, 16, and young adults from 18 to 20
at interesting locations including sporting events and
arts, etc.; in Southern Germany in connection with
winter sports, a good combination and a lot of fun.
Naturally, this year the main interest concentrates on
“Fussball” and the respective courses for 2 or 3 weeks
regarding this special sport of 2006!
How do you see the future of the Goethe-
Institutes?
In the future the ability to speak several languages will
be more important than ever before. As an example,
several years ago the development in China emphasized
the necessity of learning German because of the
fast-growing business relations. Intercultural exchange
always accompanies language studies. Our successful
programs shall continue. Our name has become very
popular also in connection with our art exhibitions,
especially the photographic sector. We organize about
six or more annual exhibitions in our art gallery. During
the last Frankfurt Book Fair, featuring Korea, we exhibited
a very famous Korean artist. We are planning the
same for 2006 in connection with India. We earn a lot of
praise and are proud of our activities. We also maintain
close connections with FIS (Frankfurt International
School). The award ceremony for their young art students
will take place at our Institute.
Do you still have free time left?
There is not much time left. I love the theater, literature,
i.e. of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Thomas Mann, and
Rainer Werner Fassbinder films. I found out that
he is more popular in foreign countries. I also studied
philosophy. So there is a large field of interests especially
in modern philosophy, i.e. around Theodor
W.Adorno.
I would like to invite all your readers who really want to
learn the German language to visit us and have a look
at our Goethe-Institute. We offer top outstanding quality.
That may be the reason why we are a little more
expensive but worthwhile for a lifetime!
Thank you, Mr. Schwinn-Zur, for the interview. We wish
you and the Goethe-Institute a bright future. ■

Working Women’s Group
http://GROUPS.yahoo.com/group/
frankfurt_workingwomensgroup
The WWG is about working women, but it is not just that:
if you want to stay connected to "working" and/or "career"
subjects regardless of your current job status - then the
Working Women's Group is just for you! We network,
socialize, and learn together through dinner, fun events,
and workshops/seminars that support us in both personal
and professional development.
The group members come from a variety of backgrounds,
which creates a very dynamic community. Many of us are
working, but if you are hesitating to join just because you
are not working right now - we have many members who
are not working and immensely enjoy being part of the
WWG. Being around a group of professionally minded
women living and working in Frankfurt helps all of us feel
connected and at home.
The group meets for dinner once per month. We also
organize one-workshop or seminar event in the evening,
which is usually held on the second Monday of
every month. Membership is open to all AWCT members
and non-members and the annual WWG fee is
10 Euros, which is used to offset costs of workshops and
seminars.
If you would like to receive the WWG invitations to
monthly social nights and workshops please register on
Writers’ Group
Isabelle de Pommereau,
069-61994144, idepommereau@surfeu.de.
What we write may turn into novels or magazine pieces.
More often than not, it consists of journal entries, short
stories or novel chapters. The goal of the Writer’s Group
is to help our members improve their writing. We do so by
meeting at 7:15 pm every two weeks to critique one
another’s work. We’ve edited the work at home and share
remarks at the meeting. Critiquing is a task we take
seriously. If your writing doesn’t sound right to others, it
probably isn’t right. If you want to write, for yourself or for
a market, please come join us. The key, we think, is not
to be shy about sharing our writing, and to accept others’
comments about our work. Good writing takes time and
many edits. Writing is sometimes painful. It can be isolating.
The writer’s group is work, but it’s well worth it. It’s
inspirational. ■
