The American Women’s Club of the Taunus e.V. was founded in February 1971. The club is a nonpolitical,
non-denominational organization, which promotes the public good (especially education
and training through the support of schools, higher educational institutions and projects as well as
the giving of scholarships to persons in addition to supporting social, cultural and medical
institutions and projects) nationally and internationally. In addition to this objective, the AWCT
intends to advance international understanding, advance cultural exchanges among Americans
and other nationalities, assist in achieving a better understanding of Germany and inform members
about issues of interest to Americans. If you would like to join the AWCT, call the office (06171-
Happy Expat Life, Part II
I
f you remember, last month I wrote about
suggestions on how to attain a “happy expat life”. It
started with you, the expat woman. While we shouldn’t
expect miracles, a good step toward a feeling of wellbeing
here in Germany can be made through
involvement—having an activity, hobby, or worthwhile
task that brings relaxation, motivation, and perhaps an
understanding friend or two. And never underestimate
the amount of useful information that you will gather.
For example, you just may discover where to find
Ziplock bags, that Dolormin Frau is a good replacement
for Tylenol, or how to make a call to the US for €0.02/
minute with the prefix 01081.
Feeling on top of our household tasks and good about
ourselves helps us cope better with our other
responsibilities, but the well-being of our children and
spouses remain a major concern. If they are unhappy,
that happy expat life may elude us. Parenting issues
and the emotional needs of our children often have
priority. This goes beyond the education factor which
parents tend to focus on first when relocating. Even the
relocation industry has realized that there is much more
than just education in creating well-adjusted expat
children, and is offering cultural training for kids,
including classroom training sessions, but also
mentoring schemes to help children integrate into their
peer groups. Young adults especially profit from this.
Here again networking for information via the club,
school, or interest groups will help concerned expat
women find solutions to problems and special needs that
might crop up. Whether it be a sport or hobby, therapy
for a physical or emotional need, or a special support
group, you will find almost everything you need in the
Rhein Main area, and often in English. Special
handbooks for parents include the AWCT’s Parent’s
Guide which provides information about being a parent
in Germany. I can also highly recommend “Discovering
Frankfurt and the Rhein-Main Area with Children” by
Heike Wolf as a well-written, practical, and very handy
guide to this specific part of Germany, which will help
you plan constructive entertainment and outings with
your children.
For more insight into the challenges children face when
moving abroad and how they could profit from the
experience can be found in David Pollock’s sensational
book Third Culture Kids. Another book, Footsteps
Around the World by Beverly Roman has very good
relocation tips specifically for teens.
We hope to see many of you at our Thanksgiving
dinner on November 23rd (see details on page 5).
Holistic Approach to Fitness
I
n what will hopefully be a regular contribution to this
newsletter I will explore the various elements that
make up a holistic approach to fitness; that is one which
considers body, mind and spirit. In today’s hectic world
the conditioning of our emotional and mental bodies is
equally important as the conditioning of our physical
body.
But, since we dwell in a physical body, the aches, pains
and stiffness that often accompany an out of shape or
inflexible physique (often a reflection of an inflexible
mind) can prevent our peace of mind as quick as a traffic
jam, so we must start here. It is terrific to be relaxed and
peaceful but if you have a problem going up a flight of
stairs or bending down to pick something up, eventually
the body is going to disrupt your daily life.
So where to start? I will approach this question of
holistic fitness from the beginning so if you are already
working out, and are relatively fit don’t worry more will
come that will apply to you.
There are three basic areas that one needs to include
in an effective program for the physique: aerobic
conditioning, flexibility and strength training. None of
these elements should be omitted. For the beginner,
start your aerobic conditioning with walking. This is the
easiest and least stressful way to get started, and
something we all do anyway. Try for twenty minutes of
continuous walking at whatever pace is comfortable
for you. Once this gets easy, pick up your pace and
shoot for thirty minutes. If you are beyond this stage
already then try a slow jog or if this is too difficult
alternate a minute or two of walking with a minute or two
of jogging, eventually increasing the jogging time and
decreasing the walking time. I once met someone who
completed an entire marathon using this technique.
While walking or jogging, pay attention to your breathing
taking long, deep breaths. You can live for weeks
without food, days without water, but not very long
without breathing. Most of us neglect this first food of
life… so begin appreciating how valuable it is and give
it some time and attention. More on this important topic
in another article.
And to close, with the holidays approaching, which
usually mean extra food, drink and stress here are a
few ideas to keep you holistically fit. Every day save
a little bit of time just for you, even if this means only ten
minutes a day. You will be amazed how much better you
will feel if you can “escape” no matter how briefly. Use
this time to take some deep breaths and center yourself,
browse through a favorite book or magazine, or walk
around the block paying attention to your posture and
breathing. If possible spend some time in natural
surroundings, even just being around some trees or
flowers will support your letting go of stress. While
doing this try to clear your mind and just pay attention
to whatever you are doing...nothing else! And a second
tip, if you know that you will be attending a party pay
extra attention to what you are eating during the day.
Keep it light and fresh so that a little extra indulgence
won’t be as significant. A extra piece of cake and glass
of champagne is not the end of the world if during the
rest of the day you ate light, but if added to your normal
intake of food these indulgences becomes extra,
unnecessary, calories that will add up and put on
weight. Enjoy the holidays… but use your intelligence!
Next month how to begin your strength training and
flexibility program. ■
Holiday Luncheon
Christmas is coming, before we know it! As I am writing this in September, the thought of how quickly time
passes is overwhelming. So before everyone's calendar is booked, save the date for the holiday lunch.
This year it will be held at the lovely Villa Bonn on Tuesday, December 12. Villa Bonn was built in 1895
for the banker Wilhelm Bonn and is a venue not to be missed. Its location near the Palmengarten is now
home to the Frankfurter Gesellschaft für Handel, Industrie und Wissenschaft, a local business, trade, and
intellectual association. To sweeten the day, we will have Champagne tasting along with information on
the different varieties. The details for the luncheon are not yet complete, but as you receive this they will
be posted on the web site, or available upon reservation. Of course, all the details will be in the December
newsletter, but feel free to reserve early. This is a small venue and reservations are mandatory, so don't
forget!
Goose Season
R
oast goose, with the customary trimmings, is the
most traditional German meal from November
through January. Goose season officially starts on St.
Martin’s day, November 11th .
Martin of Tours (France) was born in the 4 th century. He
started out as a Roman soldier and later became a monk.
Legend has it that when he was appointed bishop
against his will, he tried to hide in a goose shed, only to
be given away by the gabbing gander. He promptly
slaughtered one of them for dinner that evening.
Actually, the real reason that geese are butchered
around St. Martin’s day is simply that they’re fat and
ready this time of year. The goose down was also
essential for making quilts to keep warm during the
upcoming winter.
St. Martin’s day is especially popular with children.
When evening falls they parade through the streets
with hand-made lanterns while singing about St.
Martin’s generosity. The procession usually ends with
the lighting of a bonfire. In some towns children go from
house to house and recite poems in return for sweets
(similar to the US Halloween).
A popular St. Martin’s treat is called a Weckmann, a
sweet bread shaped like a gingerbread man with raisins
for eyes. You will see Weckmanns in most bakeries
during this time.
Roasted goose appears on menus all over Germany
starting on St. Martin’s day. Many restaurants offer
special goose dinners—reservations are highly
recommended! You can pre-order the savory roast in
some restaurants, which is a good idea if you have a
large group.
Here are some recipes for trimmings for those who
wish to try it yourselves. There is a recipe for roasted
goose in the AWCT publication “Germany à la Carte”.
The absolute must side dishes for your traditional goose
feast are potato dumplings and red cabbage. It just
won’t taste the same without these!
Potato Dumplings (Kartoffel-Knödel, -Klöße or -
Klöpse)
1 kg soft cooking potatoes (mehligkochende
Kartoffeln), peeled (German cooks often boil the
potatoes with the peels and then skin them afterwards.
I find this is too much work!)
100-150 grams flour
2 small eggs
Salt
- Boil potatoes in salted water until they are
super-soft, mash, let cool
- Knead mashed potatoes with eggs and salt.
Add enough flour to form the mass into a fat
roll
- Cut roll into 8-12 pieces and, with floured
hands, form into balls
- Drop balls into boiling water and simmer for
15-20 minutes
- Remove with a slotted spoon
Secret tip: buy the ready-made dumplings. They’re
usually right near the instant mashed potatoes in the
supermarket. Some supermarkets also carry readymade
dumpling dough in the cool section. You just need
to roll the balls and plop them into the water!)
When it comes to dumplings, Germans are experts. And
they have numerous different kinds: Kartoffelknödel: is
potato; Semmelknödel: is made from bread;
Germknödel: made with yeast, milk and flour. And the
list goes on and on…
Red (or sometimes called Blue) Cabbage (Rot- or
Blaukraut)
1 large red cabbage
1 large onion
2 tablespoons butter
1-2 sour apples (Granny Smith are good)
A “shot” of red wine (optional)
About a cup of water
1 tablespoon salt and pepper to taste
3 bay leaves
6 whole cloves
- Slice cabbage into fine strips; peel and grate
apples
- Chop onion and sauté in butter
- Add cabbage and sauté for about 5 minutes
- Add apples, red wine, water, and remaining
spices
- Simmer for about ½ hour
- Add more water if necessary
Secret tip: Ready-made Rotkraut is available in the
freezer section or in jars in most supermarkets.
More about St. Martin’s Day
Interestingly enough, St. Martin’s is also the official start
of Fasching, the German version of Mardi Gras. The
season officially starts on 11.11 at 11:11 a.m. and goes
on for what seems like forever (it culminates with
parades in February). Fasching is a serious business
about having fun, which is a good topic for another
day….
Unusual Art Exhibition at the AWCT Offices
W
illiam Owen is holding a very interesting
exhibition of about 50 paintings. The
exhibition is unusual in that he embraces a wide
variety of genre and styles. They explore his
unique and sometimes humorous insights
which show a sensitive empathy with the subject.
There is something for everyone. When he starts
a painting it is in a direct and simplified abstract
style. The work could then evolve through stages
of development until it satisfies his original vision
of the subject, sometimes reaching a
sophisticated level of craftsmanship seldom
seen in exhibitions.
“I carry art materials with me when I travel (25
countries: Europe, Middle East and Asia) and
most of my work is painted either from ‘life’ or my
own photographs. It is exhilarating to be able to
capture ‘for ever’ a moment in the life of a
landscape, person or animal. All my paintings
are, in a sense, self-portraits, expressions of
facets of my subconscious and the way I interpret
my environment.
The exhibition is open to mid December each
weekday from 9am to 12 noon.
What’s on in November
A
calamity: my pride and joy of a camellia is sick.
There are strange white marks on the leaves and
many of them-the leaves not the marks–have fallen
off. Up to now she (of course it is a she, something so
beautiful could only be a she) has been healthy and
imposing. I bought the plant about 5 years ago. In the
meantime, she has grown and grown, each time I re-pot
her the pot is bigger. At first, I have to admit, she was a
bit fractious. Instead of blooming in the spring, she
insisted on putting out buds in November and then a
grand show for Christmas. Gradually, though, she came
around to my way of thinking and last year she looked
glorious in March and April. Unfortunately, for various
reasons, I had to move her recently to a new position
which was not, it seems, good. Once I discovered that she
was sick, I went online and Google came up with some
answers. Honestly, I never realized that such lovely plants
could have such unpleasant diseases: root rots, flower
blight, twig die-back, leaf gall, viruses, sooty mold. And
then the insects which attack them: scale insects of the
tea, greedy, wax, or hemispherical type. My diagnosis
was, horror of horrors, that she had hemispherical scale
insects. Off I toddled to the nearby garden center where
I was advised to buy a spray which contains paraffin oil.
Apparently it suffocates the insects. Not a nice death but
then when I think of what they have done to my lovely
camellia, they have deserved it.
EXHIBITIONS AND OTHER ACTIVITIES
Who doesn’t love money, but it is usually for what it can
buy. But there are people who really love the coins and
banknotes for themselves. And the Numismata Fair will
be a place for these people. On November 4/5, in the
Messe Halle, the sound of coins clinking and notes being
shuffled will pervade the air. Sat, 9:30-5 pm; Sun,
9:30am-4 pm.
The Sportspresseball takes place for the 25 th time. The
Alte Oper will be the venue this year. And the theme is
“der Ball rollt nach Südafrika.” The star guest will be
Howard Carpendale who will entertain the prominent
people who are there, (and the less, of course)
In a joint action, The Institut für Stadtgeschichte, the
Historisches Museum, the Dommuseum, and the
Jüdisches Museum will present Frankfurt as the “City of the
Emperor Makers.” Around 800 objects will be on show.
Each museum will concentrate on a particular theme. It
was 650 years ago that Kaiser Karl IV proclaimed in the
“Golden Bull” that Frankfurt would be the place where the
German king would be chosen and then crowned in the
Cathedral of St. Bartholomew. Until January 14.
Austria is the country which the European Central Bank
is featuring this year. Well-known Austrian artists will
present their country’s culture in concerts, readings,
performances, and exhibitions. The activities run until
November 14. www.ecb.int/kulturtage.
One of the inspirations for Picasso’s art, particularly when
he was young, was the theater. The characters from the
Commedia dell’Arte, such as the Harlequin and Pierrot,
often appeared in his works. In 1917 he worked with
Diaghilev and designed costumes and sets for ballets.
The exhibition “Picasso and the Theater” shows over 80
works from 1900-1930 and demonstrates how
passionately Picasso loved the theater world. Schirn,
until January 21.
An exhibition which begins November 2, again in the
Schirn, is entitled “Anonymous.” Here’s what it is all
about: The initiators of the exhibition have declared
‘Anonymous exhibitions are necessary so that art may
take up the path paved by dematerialist predecessors,
that idea will take precedence over form. Critical thinking
is a prerequisite.’ I have to say it sounds like heavy stuff
– but it’s probably that I don’t understand the blurb. Until
January 14.
One more exhibition in the Schirn is the “I Like America
– fiction of the Wild West.” Over 150 paintings, films,
photos, and documentary material give an idea of how
the Wild West was presented to the Germans. Until
January 7.
Beginning November 18, there is a special exhibition in
the Saalburg museum. Over 150 articles, many lent by
the Toy Museum in Hanau, are on display in the show
“Toys and Children’s Games in Greek and Roman
Times.” Römerkastell Saalburg, Bad Homburg.
THEATER
This is “Ibsen Year 2006,” celebrating the centennial of
Ibsen’s death, so it seems appropriate that a farcical
comedy, called “The Ibsen Follies,” comes to The
International Theater this month.
“A comedy about Henrik Ibsen? You don’t have to be a
literary buff to delight in this farcical romp about two reallife
young lovers escaping the brooding gloom of
Norwegian literary history to find their day in the
Scandinavian sun. The perfect way to celebrate Ibsen
Year 2006!” The playwright, Skot Davis, is an American
playwright/actor/director who lives with his German wife
At the English Theatre in Frankfurt, a musical begins on
November 9 th : “City of Angels.”
“City of Angels takes place in the glamorous 1940’s in
Hollywood. The story traces the misadventures of Stine,

an author attempting to write a screenplay for one of his
novels. The action moves back and forth between two
worlds: Stine’s alter ego, a sardonic private investigator
named Stone, who is drawn into a murderous mystery.
City of Angels is the rarest of musical comedies; one that
is not only loaded with music and written in the
contemporary jazz idiom, but also filled with sidesplitting
comedy.”
Until February. www.english-theatre.org.
Northern Ireland
T
ravelling along the Northern Ireland coast is the
equivalent, one can imagine, of entering paradise.
Endless stretches of lush, rolling green hills that plunge
dramatically down to the sea. Deserted blonde
beaches contrast with haunting bog lands that stretch
their wet boundaries into the amethyst coloured hills
and Glens.
From the cliff tops the spectacular views of the foaming
Atlantic Ocean pounding the contours and wonders of
the Antrim coastline makes the heart quicken. The
colours of nature have a particular intensity in this most
western point of Europe.
Forty shades of green compete with an ever changing
sky that filters through great white puffs of cloud. This
corner of the Emerald Isle will fascinate and lure even
the veteran traveller into an unforgettable ecstasy.
For those who appreciate the vestiges of ancient Celtic
and early Christian beginnings, Ireland offers several
‘court-tombs’ or ‘court-cairns’ traces of the pre-
Christian settlers burial sites. Dolmens (tombs), in stone
circles with the plain of Meagh, in South Armagh as a
backdrop, create an unforgettable megalithic
experience.
After hundreds of years of invasion and domination
from the Celts, Vikings, Normans and British, the Irish
have evolved and survived their torment. The hardship,
financial instability, political and religious turbulence,
has been replaced with a palpable enthusiasm for
peace and a booming economy.
New development and design is prolific, holiday
accommodation offers an excellent choice of recently
refurbished hotels and self-catering. The food and
service is of a very high standard and in general the
‘North’ is notably clean and packed with fantastic pubs.
Because Northern Ireland is only 5,500 square miles in
area, about the size of Yorkshire or Connecticut,
establishing a base is easy and you can see most of the
main attractions in a week without clocking up more
than 500 miles.
Join the costal route at Carrickfergus, only ten minutes
from Belfast, and home of Ireland’s best-preserved
Norman Castle and since there is no hurry, bimble along
the A2 coastal road to Portstewart. Enjoy the
breathtaking scenery as the road winds between the
hedges of wild fuchsia and honeysuckle and marvel at
the majestic ruined castles that stand proudly on the
promontories of the green Glens of Antrim as they
sweep down to the sea.
As you travel from one picture postcard village to
another its not long before you reach the ‘Highly
Commended Visitor Attraction of the Year’ at the recent
Northern Ireland Tourism Awards - the Carrick-a-Rede
rope bridge. Described as one of the most amazing and
memorable attractions in Ireland, the 20-metres long, 1
metre-wide bridge of rope and wire spans a chasm
between the cliffs and the little island of Carrick-a-
Rede. Swaying precariously, 30m above the rocky
depths below - the walk across is not for the faint
hearted.
www.awctaunus.org
Just over half way to Portstewart lies the black basalt
centrepiece of this magnificent coastline, the Giants
Causeway. In keeping with Irish myths and legends
word has it that the Causeway was the work of Finn
McCool, a giant who commanded the King of Ireland’s
armies. Finn fell in love with a lassie, also a giant from
Staffa an island in the Hebrides with similar rock
formations, and built the Causeway to bring her to live
with him in Ireland. But that’s only one version and the
Irish are well known for their tales and fantasies.
The geological truth is the 40,000 many-sided columns
of layered basalt stone were formed 60 million years
ago, when a thick layer of molten basaltic lava flowed
along the valley in the existing chalk beds. As the lava
cooled and harden it contracted creating a pattern of
hexagonal cracks and columns.
The Causeway, a Unesco World Heritage site and a
Nature reserve, attracts a steady stream of visitors
who either make the two mile circular walk from the
visitors centre down to the Grand Causeway, past the
majestic stone galleries, or take the short bus ride, to
what has been describe as the 8 th wonder of the world.
Further round the coast between Ballycastle and
Portrush is the site of the oldest (legal) whiskey
distillery in the world. Since King James I granted the
licence in 1608 connoisseurs of Irish whiskey have
made a pilgrimage to Bushmills to take a wee drop o’th
“Uisce Beatha” (Water of Life). It’s well worth the visit
and the wee drop, if only to steady the nerves after
crossing the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge.
Northern Ireland is renowned for its long sandy
beaches and Portrush with its 3 km of Curran Strand will
delight surfers and young families. Atlantic rollers
pummel the wide stretch of spotless beach that runs
from the east of the town to the chalk cliffs of White
Rock.
For golfers, the Royal Portrush Golf Course is ranked
in the top twenty international fairways and offers two
excellent 18 (championship) and one 9-hole links
course.
Nightlife is buzzing and there is a wide choice of family
entertainment from ‘rock pooling’ to an indoor adventure
playground and Waterworld with spa baths, steam
rooms, water-slides and a ten-pen bowling alley.
More sedate, though equally blessed with a superb
strand, Portstewart is only a couple of miles further
west. The broad 2.5 km strand, which can
accommodate over 1000 cars on the firm sand, gives
a whole new meaning to picnicking on the beach. An
evening stroll along the pale sunlit shore is a delight that
can be long savoured after the holiday is over.
When the sun has set, turn back to base. The A26 from
Coleraine, five miles from Portstewart, links with the M2
and is about an hour’s run to Belfast. Compact and easy
to get around, Belfast is lively and great place to stay.
Massive investment has turned Belfast from the ‘bombs
and bullets’ capital of the North to a vibrant city with rich
design and some excellent places to eat.

The £300 million Victoria Sq development, due for
completion in 2007 is set to equip Belfast with superb
shopping malls, a waterfront front lined with modern
art, gourmet restaurants and great pubs. The Titanic
Quarter is Europe’s biggest ongoing regeneration
project with a financial injection of £1 billion to redevelop
the derelict shipyards and docklands of East Belfast
over the next 15 years.
A visit to the Writer’s Quarter in Cathedral Sq, Belfast’s
Left Bank, provides the chance to read the quotations
from famous Irish poets and writers, set in the stone
slabs at Writer’s Sq.
Don’t miss the Ulster Museum with a series of tableaux
explaining Irish prehistory or the Industrial Gallery
based on the 19 th century linen industry. Other
highlights of the museum are the Treasures of the
Armada and the mummy of Princess Takabuti, the first
mummy to be displayed outside of Egypt.
The former battleground of West Belfast is a compelling
and fascinating place to visit. Take a black-taxi tour of
the powerful and emotive murals that chart the history
of the political conflict. The cabbies provide a lively
commentary on the history of the war-zone.
Throughout the North there are still reminders of the
troubles, in some areas the curb stones are painted red
white and blue (Protestants) or green white and gold
(Catholics) to symbolize political loyalties. Flags and
banners fly across the streets, particularly during the
‘marching month’ just before the 12 th of July, when longstanding
passions are stirred.
There is also a more obvious security presence than
elsewhere in the UK. It’s not unusual to see armoured
police vehicles and fortified police stations and in some
city shops there is a buzzer entrance system.
The Northern Irish Tourist Board describe Ulster and as
one of the Europe’s safest, friendliest, most exuberant
tourist destinations. Empowered by the new level of
tourism and the peace process Northern Ireland is a
vibrant and remarkable place for a holiday or short
break. ■
Writers' Group
Isabelle de Pommereau 069-61994144,
idepommereau@surfeu.de
What we write may turn into novels or magazine pieces. More often
than not, it consists of journal entries, short stories or novel
chapters. The goal of the Writer's Group is to help our members
improve their writing. We do so by meeting at 7:15 pm every two
weeks to critique one another's work. We've edited the work at
home and share remarks at the meeting. Critiquing is a task we
take seriously. If your writing doesn't sound right to others, it
probably isn't right. If you want to write, for yourself or for a
market, please come join us. The key, we think, is not to be shy
about sharing our writing, and to accept others' comments about
our work. Good writing takes time and many edits. Writing is
sometimes painful. It can be isolating. The writer's group is work,
but it's well worth it. It's inspirational.
The Golden Bull
N
o, this topic has nothing to do with bullfights in
Spain, cowboys, or the stock exchange bull and
bear, but rather with the history of the City of Frankfurt.
It is not my intention to bore you with statistics, but as
residents of this part of Hessen, we should know more
about the area. One of the city’s most important
historical treasures is the “Goldene Bulle,” the
centerpiece of a jubilee exhibition that opened this
September and still can be explored until mid-January
2007 with a special interactive theater program for
children. Modern techniques make it possible for the
visitors to peruse the 86 pages and 31 chapters of the
Golden Bull (Imperial Basic Law) and discover details
regarding former legislation, rituals, and the electors.
Frankfurt’s Lord Mayor Petra Roth had to wear white
gloves to protect the Golden Bull when displaying this
original document with the golden signet (the so called
“Reichsexemplar”) at the Karmeliterkloster located
behind the Frankfurt City Hall during a recent
presentation.
Newcomers know about Johann Wolfgang von
Goethe, one of Frankfurt’s famous sons. You may have
already tried the culinary specialty “Grie Soss” (green
sauce with 7 different kinds of herbs) his mother
prepared so well, but what about more knowledge of
Frankfurt’s famous history? By the way, the Goethe
family hosted various international guests (lodging for
a week including meals 3 guilders!). There are so many
interesting details about Frankfurt and Hessen to be
discovered, like the founding of the city and the
emperors crowned here. Goethe (1749-1832) was
introduced to the Golden Bull and its topics by the
Frankfurt judge Johann Daniel von Olenschläger,
author of a commentary. When Emperor Joseph II was
crowned, Goethe explicitly described this coronation
festival in 1764 in his “Dichtung und Wahrheit” (Poetry
and Truth).
It should be a must to visit the Frankfurt Römer and
explore the magnificent Kaisersaal with its portraits of
emperors. Originally, the emperors and their civil
servants had to enter the Kaisersaal through a
trapdoor, appearing from below amidst the waiting
crowd. Later on a staircase was built.
From the Middle Ages until the revolution of Napoleon,
Frankfurt had been the main meeting place for the elite
of the empire. The emperor makers, Roman kings, and
emperors were elected by the prince electors at St.
Bartholomews’s Cathedral. A small chapel
(“Kapellchen”) south of St.Bartholomew’s parish was
the official electoral chapel. During the 16 th century,
Frankfurt became the venue for imperial coronations.
For centuries, these grand crownings were major
international festivities. According to the Golden Bull,
the elections had to be concluded within 30 days. In
case the electors failed to do so, they would be given
only bread and water until the final result was reached.
Of course, everybody was eager to stay within this
dictated period. The orb, scepter, and crown, insignia
of the Holy Roman Empire, precious objects from
Emperor Otto I of the 10 th century, were brought into the
city for the imperial coronations.
Based on Emperor Charles IV’s Imperial Act, the Golden
Bull of 1356 was established 650 years ago, formulated
rather loosely. It underwent a continuous process of
development before it was recognized as a firm anchor
of the political life by the public of the ancient régime.
This process took about 400 years. Whenever an
election was in progress, Frankfurt periodically
became the embodiment of the Empire. Present
historians claim this document to be kind of a forerunner
of the German and a future European Constitution.
Emperors’ banquets (“Kaisermahl,” oxen BBQs) were
held at the Römerberg. A fountain offered red and white
wines to the crowd. Young lads tussled for the status
symbol and trophy, an ox-head. At the Frankfurt
Historical Museum you can still see a mummified oxhead
from 1742. In later years, the Römerberg became
the place where Frankfurt’s citizens paid their homage
to the authorities.
The current exhibition of cultural history presents
Frankfurt as the “City of Emperor Makers,” with more
than 800 impressive exhibits from various European
collections. “The Emperor Makers” exhibition (die
Kaisermacher-Ausstellung) bundles Frankfurt’s
history and brings it to life creating fascinating links to
the present. Families and friends can experience a very
interesting high-speed procedure through the
centuries, starting from 794 when Frankfurt was called
“Franconofurd,” a trade fair center since 1240
developing over the years to a major financial center of
the 20th century as home of federal and state authorities
including the EZB (European Central Bank). Frankfurt is
one of the most important cities in Germany and Central
Europe!
Consul General Jo Ellen Powell listen to Mr.Voss,
milestones regarding the emperors in the Kaisersaal.
