More often than not, it consists of journal entries, short stories or novel chapters. The goal of the Writer's Group is to help our members improve their writing. We do so by meeting at 7:15 pm every two weeks to critique one another's work. We've edited the work at home and share remarks at the meeting. Critiquing is a task we take seriously. If your writing doesn't sound right to others, it probably isn't right. If you want to write, for yourself or for a market, please come join us. The key, we think, is not to be shy about sharing our writing, and to accept others' comments about our work. Good writing takes time and many edits. Writing is sometimes painful. It can be isolating. The writer's group is work, but it's well worth it. It's inspirational. � The AWCT’s HEIMATSTADT Oberursel For those of you looking for interesting cultural and sporting events for young and old in our hometown of Oberursel, click onto www.oberursel.de . The KSfO is an city organization which is there to give support and promote the interests of all the clubs in Oberursel, one of which is OUR club – the AWCT is just one of 11 clubs dealing with women’s issues.
The Golden Bull N o, this topic has nothing to do with bullfights in Spain, cowboys, or the stock exchange bull and bear, but rather with the history of the City of Frankfurt. It is not my intention to bore you with statistics, but as residents of this part of Hessen, we should know more about the area. One of the city’s most important historical treasures is the “Goldene Bulle,” the centerpiece of a jubilee exhibition that opened this September and still can be explored until mid-January 2007 with a special interactive theater program for children. Modern techniques make it possible for the visitors to peruse the 86 pages and 31 chapters of the Golden Bull (Imperial Basic Law) and discover details regarding former legislation, rituals, and the electors. Frankfurt’s Lord Mayor Petra Roth had to wear white gloves to protect the Golden Bull when displaying this original document with the golden signet (the so called “Reichsexemplar”) at the Karmeliterkloster located behind the Frankfurt City Hall during a recent presentation. Newcomers know about Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, one of Frankfurt’s famous sons. You may have already tried the culinary specialty “Grie Soss” (green sauce with 7 different kinds of herbs) his mother prepared so well, but what about more knowledge of Frankfurt’s famous history? By the way, the Goethe family hosted various international guests (lodging for a week including meals 3 guilders!). There are so many interesting details about Frankfurt and Hessen to be discovered, like the founding of the city and the emperors crowned here. Goethe (1749-1832) was introduced to the Golden Bull and its topics by the Frankfurt judge Johann Daniel von Olenschläger, author of a commentary. When Emperor Joseph II was crowned, Goethe explicitly described this coronation festival in 1764 in his “Dichtung und Wahrheit” (Poetry and Truth). It should be a must to visit the Frankfurt Römer and explore the magnificent Kaisersaal with its portraits of emperors. Originally, the emperors and their civil servants had to enter the Kaisersaal through a trapdoor, appearing from below amidst the waiting crowd. Later on a staircase was built. From the Middle Ages until the revolution of Napoleon, Frankfurt had been the main meeting place for the elite of the empire. The emperor makers, Roman kings, and emperors were elected by the prince electors at St. Bartholomews’s Cathedral. A small chapel (“Kapellchen”) south of St.Bartholomew’s parish was the official electoral chapel. During the 16 th century, Frankfurt became the venue for imperial coronations. For centuries, these grand crownings were major international festivities. According to the Golden Bull, the elections had to be concluded within 30 days. In case the electors failed to do so, they would be given only bread and water until the final result was reached. Of course, everybody was eager to stay within this dictated period. The orb, scepter, and crown, insignia of the Holy Roman Empire, precious objects from Emperor Otto I of the 10 th century, were brought into the city for the imperial coronations. Based on Emperor Charles IV’s Imperial Act, the Golden Bull of 1356 was established 650 years ago, formulated rather loosely. It underwent a continuous process of development before it was recognized as a firm anchor of the political life by the public of the ancient régime. This process took about 400 years. Whenever an election was in progress, Frankfurt periodically became the embodiment of the Empire. Present historians claim this document to be kind of a forerunner of the German and a future European Constitution. Emperors’ banquets (“Kaisermahl,” oxen BBQs) were held at the Römerberg. A fountain offered red and white wines to the crowd. Young lads tussled for the status symbol and trophy, an ox-head. At the Frankfurt Historical Museum you can still see a mummified oxhead from 1742. In later years, the Römerberg became the place where Frankfurt’s citizens paid their homage to the authorities. The current exhibition of cultural history presents Frankfurt as the “City of Emperor Makers,” with more than 800 impressive exhibits from various European collections. “The Emperor Makers” exhibition (die Kaisermacher-Ausstellung) bundles Frankfurt’s history and brings it to life creating fascinating links to the present. Families and friends can experience a very interesting high-speed procedure through the centuries, starting from 794 when Frankfurt was called “Franconofurd,” a trade fair center since 1240 developing over the years to a major financial center of the 20th century as home of federal and state authorities including the EZB (European Central Bank). Frankfurt is one of the most important cities in Germany and Central Europe! � Lord Mayor Petra Roth and the Golden Bull US-Ambassador William R.
