For details ,see page 6 18 What’s on in November A calamity: my pride and joy of a camellia is sick. There are strange white marks on the leaves and many of them-the leaves not the marks–have fallen off. Up to now she (of course it is a she, something so beautiful could only be a she) has been healthy and imposing. I bought the plant about 5 years ago. In the meantime, she has grown and grown, each time I re-pot her the pot is bigger. At first, I have to admit, she was a bit fractious. Instead of blooming in the spring, she insisted on putting out buds in November and then a grand show for Christmas. Gradually, though, she came around to my way of thinking and last year she looked glorious in March and April. Unfortunately, for various reasons, I had to move her recently to a new position which was not, it seems, good. Once I discovered that she was sick, I went online and Google came up with some answers. Honestly, I never realized that such lovely plants could have such unpleasant diseases: root rots, flower blight, twig die-back, leaf gall, viruses, sooty mold. And then the insects which attack them: scale insects of the tea, greedy, wax, or hemispherical type. My diagnosis was, horror of horrors, that she had hemispherical scale insects. Off I toddled to the nearby garden center where I was advised to buy a spray which contains paraffin oil. Apparently it suffocates the insects. Not a nice death but then when I think of what they have done to my lovely camellia, they have deserved it. A string quartet will play music by Mozart and Dvorak, and the following buffet will be “Aus Böhmen.” The concert begins at 11am. Check it out on www.hr-online.de. The Holzhausenschlößchen in Frankfurt is active in things musical. On November 6, there is jazz with Emil Mangelsdorff and a “very special friend.” November 11/ 12 there are concerts given by the Holzhausen Trio; it plays music by Mendelssohn and Schubert. On November 29, the Buchberger-Quartett play music b y Haydn. Justinianstr 5. www.holzhausenschloesschen.de.
The Mozartband plays in the Bockenheimer Depot on November 3. At the end of the month, 29, the Roma and Sinti string orchester in the same venue. Carlo-Schmid- Platz. Not too far away, in Darmstadt, there is a series of concerts entitled “Musikalische Herbst.” For instance, on November 4, in the Pauluskirche, the Philharmonie Merck plays music by Mozart and Rimski Korsakov. On the 17, in the Stadtstheater, there is a Wagner gala with the tenor Ben Heppner. And on the 24, in the Stadtkirche, “Classic meets Cuba,” with the Klazz brothers and Cuba Percussion. www.philharmonie-merck.de. The Papageno Theater in the Palmengarten is active. Not only is the theater a delight to see, harmonizing beautifully in the grounds of the Palmengarten, but it produces interesting things. For children, it has performances at 4 pm. For instance, “Die Kleine Entführung aus dem Serail,” this is a singspiel after Mozart’s opera “The Abduction from the Seraglio,” and will be performed on November 3, 4, 5. “Der Nussknacker” is a musical fairy tale with music by Tchaikovsky. November 10, 11, 12. “Peterchens Mondfahrt” is a musical Christmas fairy tale taken from a book by Bassewitz. November 17, 18, 19. “Eine Weihnachtsgeschichte” is after C. Dickens’ story and has music by Handel. November 24,25, 26 (performance also at 2 pm) and 30. On November 4, 11, 18, and 25, at 7:30 pm, June Card sings in “Brecht/Weil treffen Puccini – Gianni Schicchi.”. www.papageno-theater.de. Or call 069- 1340400. On November 19, there is Yiddish music in the Internationales Theater. And on November 23/24, Taiko, Japanese drums and dance will be presented. www.itf-frankfurt.de. EXHIBITIONS AND OTHER ACTIVITIES Who doesn’t love money, but it is usually for what it can buy. But there are people who really love the coins and banknotes for themselves. And the Numismata Fair will be a place for these people. On November 4/5, in the Messe Halle, the sound of coins clinking and notes being shuffled will pervade the air. Sat, 9:30-5 pm; Sun, 9:30am-4 pm. The Sportspresseball takes place for the 25 th time. The Alte Oper will be the venue this year. And the theme is “der Ball rollt nach Südafrika.” The star guest will be Howard Carpendale who will entertain the prominent people who are there, (and the less, of course) In a joint action, The Institut für Stadtgeschichte, the Historisches Museum, the Dommuseum, and the Jüdisches Museum will present Frankfurt as the “City of the Emperor Makers.” Around 800 objects will be on show. Each museum will concentrate on a particular theme. It was 650 years ago that Kaiser Karl IV proclaimed in the “Golden Bull” that Frankfurt would be the place where the German king would be chosen and then crowned in the Cathedral of St. Bartholomew. Until January 14. Austria is the country which the European Central Bank is featuring this year. Well-known Austrian artists will present their country’s culture in concerts, readings, performances, and exhibitions. The activities run until November 14. www.ecb.int/kulturtage. One of the inspirations for Picasso’s art, particularly when he was young, was the theater. The characters from the Commedia dell’Arte, such as the Harlequin and Pierrot, often appeared in his works. In 1917 he worked with Diaghilev and designed costumes and sets for ballets. The exhibition “Picasso and the Theater” shows over 80 works from 1900-1930 and demonstrates how passionately Picasso loved the theater world. Schirn, until January 21. An exhibition which begins November 2, again in the Schirn, is entitled “Anonymous.” Here’s what it is all about: The initiators of the exhibition have declared ‘Anonymous exhibitions are necessary so that art may take up the path paved by dematerialist predecessors, that idea will take precedence over form. Critical thinking is a prerequisite.’ I have to say it sounds like heavy stuff – but it’s probably that I don’t understand the blurb. Until January 14. One more exhibition in the Schirn is the “I Like America – fiction of the Wild West.” Over 150 paintings, films, photos, and documentary material give an idea of how the Wild West was presented to the Germans. Until January 7. Beginning November 18, there is a special exhibition in the Saalburg museum. Over 150 articles, many lent by the Toy Museum in Hanau, are on display in the show “Toys and Children’s Games in Greek and Roman Times.” Römerkastell Saalburg, Bad Homburg. www.saalburgmuseum.de.
