een a long day. Then Dan was up a few hours later, <strong>of</strong>f to go be governor. Well, I was up<br />

too with the boys.<br />

Hughes: (Handing her a photo) I don’t know<br />

if this was your first inaugural gown, but I<br />

thought it was really lovely. I love this photo.<br />

<strong>Evans</strong>: (laughs) That was in 1973. The dress<br />

is bright red – a pretty deep, cranberry sort<br />

<strong>of</strong> red.<br />

Hughes: Which son is this with you?<br />

<strong>Evans</strong>: That’s Danny, our oldest son. … And<br />

those long gloves I’m wearing! I still have<br />

those gloves somewhere. So what is he –<br />

about 12? He’s got a Prince Valiant haircut.<br />

He was born in ’60 so this would be the 1973<br />

Inaugural Ball. I liked that dress, too. It was<br />

bright red and very daring because the back<br />

was bare. It had a jacket. I wore the jacket<br />

for the <strong>of</strong>ficial proceedings that took place. Then I did take the red jacket <strong>of</strong>f to dance. Dan<br />

liked that too. (laughs)<br />

Hughes: What I like is the look in that boy’s eyes. He isn’t looking embarrassed to be<br />

dancing with his mom. He’s really proud <strong>of</strong> her.<br />

<strong>Evans</strong>: He was having a wonderful time. But Mark was not. I remember that, Mark went<br />

home early. Mark was not going to dance.<br />

Hughes: I think a lot <strong>of</strong> little boys would be real self-conscious.<br />

<strong>Evans</strong>: No, Danny liked things like that.<br />

Hughes: Did you have any first impressions about the Mansion as a place to live, that<br />

when you turned on the faucets, flushed the toilet or whatever, that you were going to<br />

have some challenges?<br />

<strong>Evans</strong>: Well, it didn’t take long to discover the little idiosyncrasies that the house had. The<br />
