Uxbridge ousts David Prouty in season opener
BY CHRISTOPHER TANGUAY
NEW LEADER STAFF WRITER
SPENCER — The Panthers of David Prouty High School
and the Spartans of Uxbridge braved a winter-like afternoon
to play their season opener on Thursday, March 27.
What started out as a beautiful day quickly turned bitterly
cold as the first pitch was thrown at Paul R. Archambeault
Field, on the grounds of David Prouty High School, even seeing
snow flurries on and off through the first few innings.
Uxbridge took the first game of the year, with an impressive
16-5 final score.
According to David Prouty coach Chuck Fahey, the
Panthers’ loss was the product of a combination of small
mistakes.
“A lot of the little things we’ve got to get done, we didn’t
do,” Fahey said following the game. “It’s a quick season, so
we can’t throw games away.”
Particularly, dropped balls, pick-offs and some base running
mishaps all contributed to the less than stellar showing.
Prouty’s starting pitcher, John Tretheway, started off the
set with a walk, then went on to toss for seven hits, two
strikeouts, three more walks and a hit batter over three
innings of work, giving up three runs in the first inning.
Tretheway managed to get through the second, only allowing
two Spartans to cross the plate, as Uxbridge’s Kyle Allaire
hit into a six-three-five double play to end the inning.
When Mike Letendre took to the mound for the Panthers in
the fourth, he gave up two walks, before again ending the
inning on a double play. This time, though, the two outs came
during a botched steal attempt. Overall, Uxbridge safely
landed at least half a dozen stolen bases throughout the
game.
After a one-two-three fifth inning, Letendre gave up a
three-run blast over the leftfield fence to Uxbridge’s Tim
Phillips, who was plucked in the shoulder during his first atbat.
That particular pitch did not go unanswered either, as
Prouty’s Josh Nicol took a pitch to the back in the fourth as
well.
Nicol was instrumental for the Panthers early on in the
game, as he laid down a bunt cover two pitches in a row,
allowing two runners to steal home in the first.
For Uxbridge, Phillips was first to take to the hill, giving
up one hit and one walk in the first. The two Panthers
brought in on the bunt play were the only runs Phillips
would allow during his five innings, even though some of
Prouty’s biggest opportunities came on passed balls. So was
their luck in the sixth, when a passed ball started off a threerun
rally over the inning.
“Our starting pitcher,” Uxbridge coach Bob McLaughlin
said, “really got to them by throwing strikes.”
In the seventh, Uxbridge’s Jason Silbur followed a double
by Ross White with a two-bagger of his own, putting up
another couple of runs, and kicking off a seven-run avalanche
to finish Uxbridge’s offensive assault on the
Panthers.
With one more inning to swing, Prouty’s Mike Mattei put
forth a valiant effort in trying to outrun a rundown, in
which he was nabbed to end the game.
Reflecting on the 16-5 season opener, McLaughlin said,
“Overall, for the opener, I’m pretty pleased with a lot of
things,” adding, “but we have to work on our base running.”
SPENCER — The Spencer sixthgrade
had a busy season.
In the fall, the Division “A” team
traveled to the Milford
an exciting season for the young
schedule in the South Central
Mass Youth Basketball League,
they met with opponents from
many large towns, such as
Southboro and Northboro.
Many of the boys have been playing together
for three years. They have been in the semifinals
of their league each year, but could not get
This year, they wanted to have a different
outcome.
On March 2, the team traveled to
Hopedale for the championship
game against Westboro. Their passion,
heart and skill carried them to
a 47-41 victory over the talented
Westboro team for the SCMYBL
sixth-grade title.
On the same weekend, the team
began their play in the West
Brookfield
Tournament.
Throughout the week they met,
again, with some tough opponents.
But on March 6, they earned first
place against a strong St. Joe’s team with a fourpoint
win. Congratulations on a well deserved
