Experience and youth both help Minutemen march past Aztecs

CHARLTON — In the Bay Path baseball
team’s 7-3 victory over Assabet on April 8,
both experienced senior leaders and less heralded
underclassmen played important roles
in leading to the Minutemen’s win. Senior
Josh St. Laurent pitched a complete game,
senior Tyler Barnes went 2 for 3 and senior
Andrew Richards called a great game behind
the plate, while sophomore Will Shedd was 2
for 4 with 3 RBIs, and freshmen Tucker
Hetherman, Ryan Fahey and Brandon Aviles
all started in the infield.
“We have a great mix of kids I think,” Bay
Path head coach Mark Sansoucy said. “With
Andrew [Richards], he keeps everybody
together.”
Richards, the vocal leader, has displayed
why he is a captain both on and off the field.
He was involved in two plays at the plate
where he made the catch and applied the tag
before would-be Assabet runs could cross
home.
“He’s been the leader for four years behind
the plate,” Sansoucy said. “He plays hard

every game and gets everybody motivated.
He eats, sleeps, drinks — everything — baseball.”
Richards also had the best seat in the house
for St. Laurent’s spot-on game. He struck out
10, walked none and despite
relinquishing 12 hits, only
allowed three runners to score.
“Josh threw great,” Sansoucy
said. “He challenges hitters
[and] throws strikes.”
The Minutemen grabbed a
lead with a two-run bottom of
the second inning. Aztecs starter
Tom Walsh got a little wild and
Hetherman drew a bases loaded
walk. St. Laurent then followed
with an infield single.
Assabet made it a 2-1 game
with a Travis Divoll RBI single,
but Bay Path rallied for three
more runs in the bottom of the
fourth. Richards popped one up
to shallow left field, but the ball
was dropped and both St.
Laurent and Barnes scored.
Shedd then plated Richards with
an RBI single.

RBI singles for the
Aztecs in the top of the
fifth, but their rally
was thwarted when
Barnes scooped up a
deep ball in center field
and threw a perfect
relay that eventually
made its way to
Richards, who tagged
Downing for the third
out.
Shedd ended the
scoring with a 2 RBI
ripped single up the
middle in the bottom of
the sixth inning.
“How about Will
Shedd? He can hit the
ball and his hands are
so fast,” Sansoucy said. “He’s going to be a
good one.”
St. Laurent then finished what he started,
getting Downing to ground out to end the
game.

game,” Sansoucy said after the Minutemen
improved to 2-0.
Bay Path also got a little bit of revenge on
Assabet since the Aztecs knocked the
Minutemen out of the Central Mass. Division
2 district tournament last season.
