CLASSROOM CORNER
Prouty holds 50th National Honor Society induction
EAST BROOKFIELD NATIVE OFFERS ADVICE TO 23 NEW MEMBERS
BY DAVID DORE
NEW LEADER STAFF WRITER
SPENCER — Twenty-three students at
David Prouty High School were part of something
special last week.
They sat on the stage of the school auditorium
Thursday, April 4 and became the
newest members of the school’s 50-year-old
chapter of the National Honor Society.
“It’s a great honor,” said Maria Martinez,
one of the inductees. “I’m the first one in my
family.”
Joining her on stage were Jason Barrett,
Cyndi Caplette, Justin Clayfield, Rachel
Clogston, Brendan Coughlin, Tyler Fitman,
Sydney Ingel, Taylor Joubert, Samantha
Kuchinski, Christine LaCroix, Sean Lammi,
Jacob McCue, Alexa Miranda, Samantha
Provencher, Fitzgerald Pucci, Isabelle
Saunders, Kiley Simonovitch, Christopher
Toomey, Ashley White, Chelsea White,
Amanda Wozniak and Jennifer Wozniak.
They join a group that also includes a
group inducted into the NHS one year ago —
Christopher Wallace (president), Amy Gebo
(vice president), Marissa Bean (secretary),
Holly Lamoureux (treasurer), Laura
Bouvier, George Chatzopoulos, Ryan Fahey,
Nicole Floria, Angela LaFountain, Samantha
Laney, Alexandra Lowell, Andrew Lowkes,
Page Maryyanek, Ashley O’Hara, Gina
Petruzzi and Maria Romano.
Becoming a member of the National
Honor Society means a student has shown
scholarship, leadership, service and character
in their daily lives.
The group sponsors an annual Alumni Day
in December, when Prouty graduates are
invited to return and share their experiences
after high school. NHS members also tutor 18
students before school. And they led a
Snowflakes for Sandy Hook effort to decorate
the school in Monroe, Conn., that Sandy
Hook Elementary School pupils attended following
the December massacre in Newtown
that claimed a total of 28 lives.
Offering the newest NHS members words
of wisdom was 24-year-old Kevin Fish, a 2007
Prouty graduate and East Brookfield native
who served as NHS president. Before becoming
an admissions counselor at Lesley
University in Cambridge, he served as student
body president at Ithaca College (the
campaign for which he did while studying in
Italy), completed an internship in the
mayor’s office in Milan, Italy, and worked
with students at English High School in the
Jamaica Plain section of Boston.
Using the image of a person tethered on an
elastic leash to a pole, Fish told the newest
NHS members to not be afraid to move
beyond the world in which they’ve grown up.
He urged them to contribute something positive
to the world — something they don’t have
to leave Prouty or Central Massachusetts to
accomplish.
“Don’t be afraid to leave the comfort of
your pole,” he said.
NB Sports Booster Club searching
for leadership
NORTH BROOKFIELD — The North
Brookfield Sports Booster Club needs your
help! With the recent resignation of its president,
the club finds itself without leadership,
and in dire need of help.
The North Brookfield Sports Booster Club
is comprised of many caring, helpful parents
and community members who want to support
the students of North Brookfield
Junior/Senior High School. The boosters
have provided uniforms, equipment, field
help, concessions and more to help the kids
of North Brookfield have a great sports experience
during their high school years. The
club also helps out various other sports
needs in town when possible.
There are even members of the club who
do not have students at the high school, and
they give generously of their time — and you
can, too! The president does not have to do
the job by themselves, as there are many
hands willing and ready to step up and help.
The North Brookfield Sports Booster Club
meets every month, typically the first
Wednesday of every month. Please consider
this important opportunity.
