Students on the Hill go their separate ways<br />

WORCESTER — Don’t be<br />
scared by daunting situations,<br />
just soldier on.<br />
Shepherd Hill Regional<br />
High School Senior Class<br />
President James Scanlon<br />
shared that message with the<br />
graduating class of 2008, all<br />
Proud seniors await their diplomas at Sunday’s graduation.<br />

exercises Sunday<br />
from what was called “one of<br />
the finest high schools in<br />
Massachusetts.”<br />
For the first time in its 35-<br />
year history, the school’s<br />
graduation ceremony was<br />
held at the DCU Center.<br />
“Congratulations Class of<br />
2008,” Dudley-Charlton<br />
Regional School District<br />
Superintendent Sean Gilrein<br />
said. “May the wishes you<br />
wish all come true.”<br />
Eager family and friends<br />
gathered in the ceremony hall<br />
to watch the students take<br />
one more step on their path to<br />
a greater future. During a<br />
series of speeches, several<br />
speakers gave advice to the<br />
graduating class.<br />
“There will be times in the<br />
road ahead that will seem<br />
daunting,” said Senior class<br />
President James Scanlon. “As<br />
doors open, it’s our decision<br />
to walk through.”<br />
With many of the students<br />
preparing for their freshman<br />
years at college next year,<br />
Dudley-Charlton Regional<br />
School District Committee<br />
Chairman Geraldine Nowicki<br />
set a high bar for them.<br />
“You should have high<br />
expectations for your future,”<br />
she said. “It is now up to you<br />
as to what you’re going to<br />
build. Make it yours. Don’t<br />
look for the easy way out.”<br />
Before the speeches, the<br />
graduates — men draped in<br />
maroon gowns and women in<br />
gold — strode onto the stage<br />
as parents eagerly jockeyed<br />
for good from which to snap<br />
photos.<br />
Students and school officials<br />
then exchanged two<br />
types of gifts — scholarships<br />
and keepsakes. Principal<br />
Timothy Schur and Director<br />
of Student Resources<br />
Suzanne Cabral were joined<br />
by others in presenting<br />
$93,8000 worth of various<br />
scholarships to some of the<br />
fresh graduates. Immediately<br />
afterward, Class of 2008<br />
Treasurer Samantha Ide presented<br />
the school with three<br />
new banners bearing the<br />
school’s name as well as<br />
money for new audio and<br />
video equipment.<br />
The gifts capped off a banner<br />
year for a class that has<br />
achieved so much in just nine<br />
months. Students in the graduating<br />
class organized a project<br />
to assist Darfur, a wartorn<br />
region of Sudan. As part<br />
of the project, the class met<br />
former Sudan child slave<br />
Francis Bok, who lectured<br />
students on his experiences.<br />
They also organized the<br />
Dodgeball For Darfur<br />
fundraiser to raise money for<br />
the cause.<br />
Earlier this year, they hosted<br />
the Meet The Candidates<br />
Night, during which candidates<br />
for various town posts<br />
spelled out their platforms.<br />
That’s just a small sampling<br />
of the many things they<br />
have learned this year, and<br />
Scanlon hopes they will carry<br />
forward.<br />
“We’ve come a long ways<br />
since freshman year,”<br />
Scanlon said. “It’s time for us<br />
to go our separate ways.”<br />
Nowicki’s advice for the<br />
departing students served as<br />
primer for the rest of the students’<br />
lives.<br />
“Don’t look for the easy way<br />
out,” she said. “Never doubt<br />
your ability to get where<br />
you’re going.”<br />
Graduates, Schur told<br />
them, must remember who<br />
started them down that path.<br />
“Don’t forget to thank your<br />
parents for everything,” he<br />
said.<br />
