The school sent 297 seniors into the adult world Sunday as a few thousand friends and family members crowded the gymnasium to cheer them. Emerson’s famous line, “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us” popped up repeatedly in student speeches as the day’s overall theme, linked to everything from tennis to morality. The former came from class President Jillian Fasser, who said she was thinking about the quote when she tapped her forehead and realized it still hurt from whacking herself in the head with a tennis racket. The incident occurred during a match against Leicester, a team Tantasqua lost to last year, so she said she went into it “silently chanting my mantra ‘This time will be different.’” It almost wasn’t — in her first set, she recalled, she hit herself hard and lost, but thought the growing bruise “should be a source of motivation” and came back to win the match. “Don’t let past worries or memories prevent you from looking to the future,” Fasser urged her peers. To Sean Heningham, Emerson’s line essentially means, “what matters now is only you and your character.” “Great things do not equate to lots of money or nice cars,” he said, but to behaving morally and remembering that they’ve already learned such simple things as compassion, not to cheat and shake hands after losing. Those ideas tied well into Superintendent Daniel Durgin’s invocation of the Dalai Lama. Quoting a lengthy part of a speech by the Tibetan leader, Durgin reminded the graduates, “ ‘As humans are social beings, we come into the world dependent on the actions of others.’” Starting with the basic mechanism of birth and lasting throughout life, he noted, “Most of our happiness is … due to the action of others.” Durgin said this class had a particularly personal meaning for him, because he started working in the district (although not his current job) 13 years ago, the same time these students did. Beyond that, he noted his daughter, Kaitlin, graduated Sunday. Follow your passion and find what makes you happy in life, then pursue it,” Durgin said. Referring to his own mother and mother-in-law as examples because they followed their dreams after taking years off to raise children, he added, “It’s never too late to do what will make you happy.” “‘Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success,’” Durgin noted, citing Dr. Albert Schweizer. For School Committee Chairman Kathleen Neal, whose son, Connor, — co-author of the Town Meeting bag ban article — was also in the class, the year was both personal and mundane. “You also seem to have a strange affinity for plastic,” Neal said, sparking applause, “whether it’s plastic bags or tossing plastic ducks into the school pond.” The ducks themselves were in surprisingly sparse numbers — a balloon, a stuffed duck, and a handful of duck decorations inside parked cars being the only reminders of the recent senior prank that fell apart. To Neal, the more important element of the day was the mixture of parental pride and tears at seeing children growing up and moving on. A key part of the latter, she noted, is doing things that challenge expectations. “‘Some men see what’s there and say ‘Why?’” she said, quoting from Robert Kennedy’s favorite observation of Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw. “‘I do things that never were and say, ‘Why not?’” Gus Steeves may be reached at (508) 909-4135, or by e-mail at gsteeves@stonebridgepress.com.
