Just as there is a large sport system <strong>in</strong><br />
England, there is also a wide network<br />
of volunteer<strong>in</strong>g organisations to help all<br />
sectors, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g sport (see Figure 1).<br />
This <strong>in</strong>cludes:<br />
Local Volunteer Centres<br />
What do they do?<br />
They provide support at a local level for<br />
<strong>in</strong>dividual volunteers and volunteer<br />
<strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g organisations.<br />
How can they help your sports club?<br />
By:<br />
• Operat<strong>in</strong>g as brokers - putt<strong>in</strong>g potential<br />
volunteers <strong>in</strong> touch with volunteer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
opportunities and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, and l<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />
volunteer-seek<strong>in</strong>g organisations with<br />
appropriate people.<br />
• Promot<strong>in</strong>g your volunteer<strong>in</strong>g needs<br />
through encourag<strong>in</strong>g local <strong>in</strong>terest<br />
via events and publicity.<br />
• Deliver<strong>in</strong>g good practice tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />
• Provid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation for volunteers<br />
and volunteer managers/coord<strong>in</strong>ators.<br />
• Develop<strong>in</strong>g volunteer<strong>in</strong>g roles and<br />
opportunities with<strong>in</strong> your sports club.<br />
• Provid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation on policy.<br />
• Respond<strong>in</strong>g to local campaigns from<br />
a volunteer<strong>in</strong>g perspective.<br />
• L<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g strategically to your<br />
Community <strong>Sport</strong>s Network and<br />

Although many sport volunteers are<br />
recruited directly <strong>in</strong>to clubs, events or<br />
sport govern<strong>in</strong>g bodies, Local Volunteer<br />
Centres can extend the type and range<br />
of people who volunteer <strong>in</strong> sport and<br />
may well be able to identify someone<br />
with special skills who would not usually<br />
