What volunteering
organisations need
to know about sport
Why should Volunteer Centres
get involved with sport?
• For these potential benefits:
Local sports clubs are part of the
community so by reaching these
groups Volunteer Centres can
connect with new audiences.
• Working with sport increases the
range of opportunities available on
the Volunteer Centre database.
• Getting in touch with the County Sports
Partnerships and Community Sports
Networks enables Volunteer Centres to:
• identify the best-placed sport clubs
to work with on volunteering
• build on Local Strategic Partnership
and Local Area Agreement targets
• develop a wider voluntary
sector infrastructure.
What is a sport volunteer?
Someone who gives their time to help
with a sports club, organisation or event
in any support role, whether generic or
sport-related.
Volunteers can fill a wide range of roles
in sports.
Why?
• Many roles do not require knowledge
of the sport.
• Most roles are found in any community
organisation - transferable skills.
• You don't need to be sporty!
Sport needs volunteers to help with
many things, such as:
• looking after the finances
• creating publicity
• attracting sponsorship
• web site design and management
• making lunches and teas
or
• just being on hand to give support
at events.
Go to www.skillsactive.com/careers/
for lots of examples of roles in sport
volunteering and the skills they require.
What the volunteers
say about finding sport
volunteering through
Volunteer Centres:
“
I originally came into the
Volunteer Centre as I had
recently been made
redundant from a job I
really enjoyed. I realised
that I wanted to put my
knowledge from my sports
science degree to some
use in a job but I didn’t
have any relevant
experience, as I had not
worked in the field. What
I expected from the service
was that a sports club or
organisation would have
a vacancy which they
needed filling and I would
go along and help out.
What I found was that the
service was much more
tailored to MY needs and
what I wanted to get out
of the experience.
What is a sport volunteer
manager/coordinator?
Someone responsible for managing a
group of volunteers for a sports club,
organisation or event. In volunteering they
are usually known as ‘volunteer managers’
but in sport they are also known as
‘volunteer coordinators’. However, many
sport clubs may not have defined this role
yet so have no designated person with
responsibility for volunteers.
What help do sport organisations
need from volunteer organisations?
Many sport clubs will need help and
advice on:
• The whole idea of volunteers - they
may not recognise as volunteering the
unpaid help they already receive from
players, supporters, parents and
members of the local community.
• Defining the volunteer roles they
have within the club, including
volunteer coordinators.
• Providing an induction for volunteers.
• Expenses for volunteers - what to pay
and what not to pay.
• Succession planning for volunteer roles
within the club.
• How to write a volunteer strategy
or plan.
They might also need help with raising the
profile of volunteer management within
the club itself - because winning sports
matches or leagues, enrolling more
players, or going on tour at the end of the
season might seem to be more important
than rewarding those who help to keep
the club going.
How can our Volunteer Centres start
to work with sport?
As County Sports Partnerships work
in sub-regional areas - it would be best
to contact the CSP representing the
sub-regional Volunteer Centres in
your geographical area.
You can find your nearest CSP on the
work in partnership, funded by
Sport England.
What have they achieved?
The funded post-holder and other
Community Sector.
Are they still working in partnership?
Yes, there is still funding for
this project.
What can we learn from this?
Their experiences provide valuable
practical lessons as well as raising
important questions for the future
of volunteering in sport - see the
What sport
organisations
need to know
about volunteering
Why should your sport
organisation work with wider
volunteering organisations?
Do you want more volunteers?
Are you finding it difficult to
retain volunteers?
Could you make better use of
your volunteers?
If you said ‘yes’ to any these questions
there are volunteering organisations
whose job it is to help you.
How are volunteering
organisations organised?
Just as there is a large sport system in
England, there is also a wide network
of volunteering organisations to help all
sectors, including sport (see Figure 1).
This includes:
Local Volunteer Centres
What do they do?
They provide support at a local level for
individual volunteers and volunteer
involving organisations.
How can they help your sports club?
By:
• Operating as brokers - putting potential
• Developing volunteering roles and
opportunities within your sports club.
Although many sport volunteers are
recruited directly into clubs, events or
sport governing bodies, Local Volunteer
Centres can extend the type and range
of people who volunteer in sport and
may well be able to identify someone
with special skills who would not usually
have found their way into sport. See
Nottingham Volunteer Centre and
the local authority as well as other
Volunteer Centres in the area and
sports clubs.
What have they achieved?
• Better volunteer management
within 30 sports clubs in the area
- for all current volunteers as
well as new volunteers.
• 122 new sports volunteers
through the Volunteer Centre.
Are they still working in partnership?
It required the appointment of a
dedicated person, in post as Sports
Volunteering Development Worker,
to give sport groups the level of
attention they enjoyed over the
two-year life of the project. This
post has now finished and sport
opportunities continue to appear on
the Nottingham Volunteer Centre
database, from the sport clubs with
whom they worked during the project.
What can we learn from this?
Initial investment of time and other
resources can lead to ongoing
support for sport clubs in the same
way that Volunteer Centres support
other community organisations.
What have they achieved?
The funded post-holder and other
staff at 2D have been working to
make sports teams into sports
clubs and sports clubs into part of
the volunteering infrastructure
Are they still working in partnership?
Yes, there is still funding for
this project.
Sub-regional volunteering
infrastructure networks
What do they do? These are the equivalent
of County Sports Partnerships but for
volunteering. They link together all the
How can they help your sports club?
By spreading the net for recruitment.
Volunteering England
What do they do? Volunteering England
is a national charity working to promote
volunteering and volunteer management.
They offer a range of resources to anyone
who works with or manages volunteers
and to those who want to volunteer.
How can they help your sports club?
By bringing sport and volunteering
organisations together - they are currently
leading a sport volunteering project to
promote this initiative.
Sport England 9
What is a volunteer-involving
organisation?
Any organisation that seeks to engage
volunteers who will help it to run smoothly.
This can be anything from a small
community group to a major corporate
sector business. Local sports clubs are
community groups.
What is sport volunteering all about?
Volunteers are the lifeblood of many sports
clubs. So what do most sports clubs and
event organisers say they need most?
Help from Volunteers!
Often, managing your current volunteers
better can make them happier and more
productive. Satisfied volunteers are more
likely to spread good reports of your sport
group by word of mouth. It’s similar to
when you’re at your workplace - if you’re
treated well you tend to work better,
harder and tell people good things
about your workplace.
Creating great surroundings for volunteers
is all about making sure that the whole
sports club is aware of and getting the
most out of its current volunteers. You
need to be ready for any new volunteers
and help them to focus the use of the
time they are prepared give to the club.
Why do sport volunteers
need managing?
Sports volunteers don’t just happen!
They need to be recruited and looked
after just like the players in any sports
club. Managing volunteers leads to better
volunteers through reward and retention
and makes recruitment easier.
What does good sport volunteer
management involve?
A good sport volunteer
manager/coordinator provides:
• Clear volunteering roles within the club.
• An induction for volunteers.
• Expenses for volunteers - and knows
what to pay or not to pay.
• Succession planning for roles within
the club.
• Help with writing a volunteer strategy
or plan.
• Advice on how to raise the profile of
volunteer management within the club
itself - when winning sports matches
and getting more players, or going on
tour at the end of the season might
always seem to be more important.
What help is available?
The following places can give you
support and help you improve your
volunteer management:
Volunteer Centres
those managing volunteers within a local
