VitalSim Familiarisation Programme
The programme has been designed and developed to familiarise ADHB clinical staff
with the following Laerdal simulators:
Resusci Anne Simulator, MegaCode Kid, ALS Simulator and Nursing Baby.
The programme provides an:
features and functions of each of the Laerdal manikins listed above
overview of cabling, electronic components, air supply, defibrillation etc.
hands-on session with the remote controls and VitalSim units
scenario planning
scenario enactment
technical debriefing only
The presenters strive to ensure the programme is both enjoyable and interactive and,
at the course conclusion, participants will feel competent and confident to deliver
simulated scenarios using VitalSim manikins.
The programme is presented by experienced and simulation-savvy staff members
including adult and paediatric nurse educators, resuscitation coordinators, myself and
Laerdal-trained clinical engineers employed at Auckland Hospital.
Although the programme has been designed specifically for ADHB users there may
be ‘seats’ available to clinical staff from other centres.
Some points to note:
Each course has a ceiling number of 15. Non-ADHB staff would be notified if there is
a place available no sooner than 2 weeks before the course start.
There will be no charge (or course fees) for any clinical staff from DHB’s and other
centres throughout NZ.
The programme is not appropriate for under-graduate programmes.
It is recommended that two participants from the same clinical work area attend. This
helps ensure that each participant has support in designing and delivering simulated
scenarios in their own ward or department.
The ADHB programme is suited to a wide range of clinical staff including medical
officers nurses and nurse educators, physiotherapists and anaesthetic technicians.

If it is unlikely that you will have technical/electronic back-up at your hospital, it is
recommended that prospective attendees do discuss some of the likely follow-on
issues with the CSC Coordinator when booking a place on either of these
programmes.
