Scenic views of the Brontë Hills
The Railway runs like a ribbon though Brontë
Country and along the way you can expect to
take in some of the most breathtaking scenery
and famous landscapes in the world. Explore miles
of pathways and rich wildlife - expect to see wild
plants and animals, stiles and sheep, stone ruins
and trails - and not forgetting the stunning
Brontë Waterfall.
Haworth is the epitome of Emily Brontë’s legendary
Wuthering Heights. There’s an enchanting mystique
to the wild and rugged moors that surround
this beautiful village - prepare to fall in love with
Haworth and its living, breathing past. During the
Winter months the wonderful rolling mists cloak
the landscape, making it easy to lose yourself in the
famous Brontë Parsonage and immerse yourself in
the history of its historic graveyard.
The Railway Children
Step back in time and relive the famous story of
The Railway Children. Stand on the bridge and
watch the vintage steam trains puff their way up and
down the valley, or jump aboard and imagine you’re
in The Railway Children as you travel to the
Edwardian Oakworth station - the location for the
famous 1970s film. The Keighley and Worth Valley
Railway and the surrounding towns and villages
were used extensively in the 1970 film The Railway
Children and several of the railway’s steam
locomotives also featured.
The Museum of Rail Travel, located at Ingrow,
is home to five of the carriages which were used in
the film. Make sure you get off the train and explore
by foot one of the many Railway Children Walks.
East Riddlesden Hall
A 17th century manor house with romantic,
intimate gardens - a great day out for all the family.
For generations, the East Riddlesden Hall estate
was a hive of farming activity; producing enough
milk, cheese and bread to adequately supply the
household and its workers.
Today, their friendly room guides bring the house
to life and share the fascinating stories that have
made this special place an award winning visitor
attraction. Going into the Hall feels like walking
through someone’s home; it has a cosy lived-in feel,
and creates a relaxing atmosphere where visitors
can feel at ease examining the exquisite
embroideries and blackwork, oak furniture
and pewter.
Brontë Parsonage Museum
Pay homage to the world famous Brontë Parsonage
Museum, as the original home of the famous literary
family, it has been lovingly preserved and is packed
with personal possessions as well as a changing
programme of exhibitions and events.
The Brontë Parsonage Museum is maintained by
the Brontë Society in honour of the Brontë sisters -
Charlotte, Emily and Anne - in their former home,
the parsonage in Haworth, West Yorkshire, an area of
England surrounded by moorland. It is popular with
those seeking to find the source of the sisters’
inspiration, and is of particular interest as the Brontës
spent most of their lives here and wrote their famous
novels in these surroundings.
The Brontë Parsonage Museum is beautifully
maintained and packed full of family memorabilia,
original furniture and facts and information for visitors
to guide themselves around.
STEAM
ADVENTURE
heart of Brontë Country, a perfect day out for all the family!
Immerse yourself in the history of the railways and experience
a really big, noisy adventure.
Get outdoors
For those who like the great outdoors the Railway
has plenty of spectacular walks and nature trails.
Try the Top Withens Walk - this walk takes you out
of Haworth, the village where the Brontë sisters
lived and wrote, along pathways they walked and
through the moorland that inspired them.
Brontë Hills
On 13th April 1867 the Keighley & Worth Valley
Railway was opened connecting Haworth to
Keighley. A windswept land of heather and wild
moors, it is hardly surprising that this region
became the inspiration for the classic works of
the Brontë sisters, Charlotte, Emily and Anne.
Did you know?
The Keighley and Worth Valley Railway is the only
complete preserved standard gauge line anywhere
in the world! Damems is also the smallest full sized
station in Britain.
Marvel at the museums
Get off at Ingrow West and you will find two award
winning transport museums. The Ingrow Museum
of Rail Travel has several incredible Victorian and
Edwardian carriages. Sound and video presentations
help to bring the past to life. The Ingrow Loco
Museum is housed in the former Midland Railway
goods warehouse. It has several locomotives as
well as displays, exhibits and archive film.
Opening times
The Railway is open all year round. The trains run every
A JOURNEY FULL OF DISCOVERY
Keighley
Keighley is the northern terminus of the Worth Valley branch
line where it connects with the mainline. The line opened in
1867 with its main purpose being to provide coal to the local
mills. Platform 4 has an original canopy providing shelter from
the weather and giving the atmosphere of a traditional British
Railways station. The turntable situated opposite was originally
located at Garsdale on the famous Settle to Carlisle line and
the Signalbox (undergoing major restoration) once operated
at Shipley station.
Also to see at Keighley:
East Riddlesden Hall: An excellent example
of a 17th Century National Trust manor house.
Cliffe Castle: A free museum full of local history.
Ingrow west
When the line re-opened in 1968, the original station
was beyond repair so Ingrow operated as an unmanned halt.
In the 1980s a successful appeal raised enough funds to
purchase the old station at Foulridge (on the Skipton to
Colne line) and, stone by stone, the station was re-erected
at Ingrow, giving the station we have today.
Ingrow is the home to two museums:
Ingrow Loco: Locomotives, displays, exhibits and archive
film combine to create a story of the steam locomotive.
Museum of Rail Travel: Over 60 TV and film
productions have featured restored railway
carriages from this multi-award winning museum.
Damems
Pronounced Dam-ems this is the smallest full sized station in
the UK. Used for the BBC series Born and Bred as Ormston,
it is one of two level crossings on the Railway. Damems is a
request stop and those wishing to alight here should inform
the Guard and travel in the front coach (usually the one
immediately next to the engine).
Oakworth still retains its Edwardian splendour and is kept
as near as possible to the condition it would have been in
1905-1914. Undoubtedly Oakworth is the most famous stop
on the Railway, having been used as the station in the 1970 film
The Railway Children.
Haworth
Haworth has been regarded as the headquarters of the line
ever since opening in 1968 and remains so today with the
administration office, accommodation block and locomotive
works of the line still situated here. There is a picnic and
viewing area overlooking the loco works. Haworth station
is home to the Railway’s main Gift Shop, which is open all
year round (apart from Christmas Day) and is well worth
a browse during your visit. In the summer, why not hop on
board the vintage bus to get a different view of the line
(may operate at other times, check website for details).
Haworth’s Main Street is famous for its authentic feel
with many shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs.
Also to see at Haworth:
Brontë Parsonage Museum: Brontë family’s former
home fully restored with an exhibition about
their lives. Parish Church: Final resting place
for many members of the Brontë family.
Oxenhope
Oxenhope is the original terminus of the line at 660ft above sea
level and is a good starting point for many of the Railway walks.
Here there is a platform buffet as well as a small gift shop in
the station building. Oxenhope is the home to our Carriage
& Wagon department where our rolling stock is maintained and
is also where most of the carriages are housed when not in use.
The Exhibition Shed across from the station building is well
worth a visit, housing a collection of locomotives and rolling
stock where you can take a closer look and take photos.
