Eleven Generations
of the Same Family
The 12th Century Norman Pele Tower is the oldest part of
Dalemain. The manor house has evolved through the centuries and
the early Georgian pink ashlar façade completed in 1744 was the
last significant addition. It was some 65 years earlier that Sir
Edward Hasell, Steward to Lady Anne Clifford purchased the house
and to the current day it continues to be home to the Hasell family.
House
The first part of the House to be discovered is Georgian Dalemain,
rich with family portraits, ceramics and period furniture. Sixteen
sheets of handpainted wallpaper were brought in tea clippers from
China in 1757 for the Chinese room.
A change of centuries takes you through the servants passage into
the Pele Tower where there is a display of uniforms, photographs
and other bits and pieces devoted to the Westmorland &
Cumberland Yeomanry.
Upstairs the fretwork room has a 16th Century plaster ceiling and
part of a 17th Century diary written by Lady Anne Clifford, a more
formidable woman even than the Dalemain housekeeper of old,
whose room has a priest’s hidey hole off it.
Gardens
The Gardens have developed during the passing generations of owners
and are for all to enjoy. There are 5 acres of richly planted herbaceous
borders with an intriguing and unusual combination of flowers.
The terrace border concentrates on drought-loving and long flowering
herbaceous plants to give the maximum amount of cover. In the knot
garden you will find an emphasis on herbs and white flowers.
For a gentler and more scented experience, go quietly up the apple walk
beside the old-fashioned roses which give their best in June and July.
Down in the wild garden the famous show of Himalayan Blue Poppies
‘meconopsis Dalemain’ can be seen from mid May to mid June.
The walk to Dacre of about one mile through the peaceful valley behind
Dalemain is the centre of the agricultural estate which is not only a
commercial sheep farm, but also supports a wide variety of wildlife.
Courtyard
In the Courtyard the 16th Century Elizabethan barn houses a good
number of agricultural implements from our Cumbrian farming
heritage these include a turnip basher, cheese press and such like.
There are also fell pony artefacts.
Visit the Dalemain Gift Shop with a range of quality goods and
souvenirs plus antiques from 'Cockermouth Antiques’ and a range
of delicious marmalades.
Our plant centre stocks a fine collection of plants, mostly propogated
in the gardens, many on show.
