BOLTON FIREFIGHTERS TRAINED BY<br />
PARAMEDICS TO TEACH HEARTSTART<br />
FIREFIGHTERS in Bolton have been trained to<br />
demonstrate life-saving techniques to local<br />
schoolchildren by North West Ambulance<br />
accredited HeartStart teachers among their<br />
firefighters in Bolton, Farnworth <strong>and</strong> Horwich.<br />
OLYMPIC TORCH OPEN DAY AT BOLTON<br />
CENTRAL FIRE STATION<br />
AS the Olympic torch made its way through<br />
the North West – Bolton Central <strong>Fire</strong> Station<br />
opened its doors to hundreds of school<br />
children as the relay passed by.<br />
It was carried past the Moor Lane <strong>Fire</strong> Station<br />
on Thursday, May 31, as part of its 70-day<br />
journey around the UK for the 2012 Olympic<br />
Games.<br />
Station Manager Steve Parkinson said: “We<br />
opened the stations doors to the community<br />
<strong>and</strong> around 100 children from local primary<br />
schools joined us to watch the Olympic torch<br />
pass.<br />

<strong>Service</strong> (NWAS) paramedics to become<br />
accredited teachers.<br />
They were joined by Bolton West MP Julie<br />
Hilling at Bolton Central <strong>Fire</strong> Station on Friday,<br />
May 11, 2012, as 16 firefighters were taught<br />
British Heart Foundation HeartStart.<br />
Station Manager Steve Parkinson said:<br />
“Cardiac problems affect a lot of families in<br />
Bolton so as a community fire station we see<br />
it as our responsibility to help make everyone<br />
more aware of heart health <strong>and</strong> emergency<br />
life support procedures.<br />
“Working with our partners at NWAS the<br />
accredited HeartStart course will mean we<br />
can teach life support to youth groups <strong>and</strong><br />
schoolchildren of all ages.”<br />
Thanks to the training, <strong>Greater</strong> <strong>Manchester</strong><br />
<strong>Fire</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Rescue</strong> <strong>Service</strong> now has 45<br />
“There was a real party atmosphere, we had<br />
an old fashioned vintage turntable ladder fire<br />
engine down from our museum, our hydraulic<br />
platform was up <strong>and</strong> there was lots going on.”<br />
Later that same day, crews from Horwich <strong>Fire</strong><br />
Station got even more involved with the event<br />
– by washing the support team’s dirty kit!<br />
At Farnworth, Green Watch firefighters Rik<br />
Ridings <strong>and</strong> John Naylor took part in an<br />
alternative Olympic torch relay involving pupils<br />
from 12 schools in Little Lever <strong>and</strong> Kearsley<br />
on Thursday, May 24.<br />

MOSQUES WORK TOGETHER AFTER<br />
FIRE<br />
FRIDAY Prayers was used to highlight to the<br />
community the importance of smoke alarms<br />
following a fire in the town which left two<br />
children in hospital.<br />
GMFRS has been working in partnership with<br />
Bolton Council of Mosques (BCoM) after early<br />
indications showed there were no working<br />
