instructors <strong>and</strong> we want to make this an<br />

PRINCE’S TRUST TEAMS<br />

A VISIT from former <strong>Manchester</strong> City <strong>and</strong><br />

Engl<strong>and</strong> star Earl Barrett provided a<br />

motivational morning for members of GMFRS<br />

Prince’s Trust teams.<br />

At the event, cadets were presented with<br />

awards <strong>and</strong> certificates by GMFRS’s County<br />

<strong>Fire</strong> Officer Steve McGuirk <strong>and</strong> High Sheriff of<br />

<strong>Greater</strong> <strong>Manchester</strong> George Almond CBE,<br />

who was County <strong>Fire</strong> Officer at GMFRS when<br />

the cadets scheme began.<br />

CADETS AND VOLUNTEERS AT DALAI<br />

LAMA EVENT<br />

THE Dalai Lama was the guest of honour at<br />

an event attended by GMFRS cadets <strong>and</strong><br />

volunteers from Stretford <strong>and</strong> Eccles recently.<br />

They joined thous<strong>and</strong>s of other young people<br />

at the Century of Dialogue – St<strong>and</strong> up <strong>and</strong> be<br />

the Change event at the <strong>Manchester</strong> Arena on<br />

Saturday, June 16.<br />

Adam Tormey from GMFRS’s Children <strong>and</strong><br />

Young People’s department said: “It was a<br />

great event for our young people to take part<br />

in, because the whole idea of it was to<br />

encourage young people to avoid violence<br />

<strong>and</strong> conflict to change the world for the<br />

better.<br />

“It was particularly poignant after the violence<br />

last summer <strong>and</strong> a fantastic opportunity for<br />

our Community <strong>Fire</strong> Cadet units from<br />

Stretford <strong>and</strong> Eccles to learn from an iconic<br />

figure such as his holiness the Dalai Lama.<br />

“His aim of encouraging young people to<br />

peacefully resolve disputes, personally, locally<br />

<strong>and</strong> globally through compassion,<br />

underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>and</strong> dialogue was great to hear<br />

<strong>and</strong> had an impact on all the young people<br />

who attended.”<br />

On Monday, June 18, the former defender –<br />

who hails from Rochdale <strong>and</strong> also played for<br />

Oldham Athletic – delivered a rousing<br />

presentation to 24 members of GMFRS’s<br />

Prince’s Trust teams from <strong>Manchester</strong> East<br />

<strong>and</strong> Wythenshawe at the Training <strong>and</strong><br />

Development Centre.<br />

<strong>Manchester</strong> East Prince’s Trust Team Leader<br />

George Hayden said: “It was fantastic to have<br />

Earl down to talk to the teams because he’s a<br />

really inspirational figure.<br />

“As a former Engl<strong>and</strong> defender he brought his<br />

caps <strong>and</strong> medals down <strong>and</strong> the young people<br />

were able to learn all kinds of things from Earl<br />

about hard work, dedication <strong>and</strong> motivation.”<br />
