Dogs win hearts and medals It was not so much ‘first past the post’ as ‘first to sniff the post’ when UWA hosted its first dog show, on election day. The Gundog Club of Western Australia exhibited 140 well-behaved dogs across 17 breeds, including Labrador Retrievers, Cocker Spaniels, German Short-Haired Pointers and Irish Setters. The Premier shows his preference for yellow labradors The show was opened by the Premier, Colin Barnett, a Labrador Retriever enthusiast. He said he had not brought his two yellow Labradors because they would not be competitive in obedience! Professor of Chemistry George Koutsantonis is the President of the Club and Gabe Gooding, senior scientific officer in Biomedical, Biomolecular and Chemical Sciences, is the Vice President. George breeds German Short-Haired Pointers and won Best of Breed and Runner-up in that category and Best Open of all breeds with his Grand Champion Dog. Gabe’s family has bred Cocker Spaniels for 50 years. Her dogs also won Best of Breed and Runner-up in that breed. She also won Best Baby Puppy of all breeds. The dogs were judged by Carole Coode, an eminent judge from the UK. There are 29 breeds of dogs that fall under the category of gundog. “Of course, there is no hunting these days,” said George.
