Partnered Research Working Group: participated in developing procedure for academic<br />

interface with corporate projects. Wrote poi9stion papers on the relevance <strong>of</strong> the Fine Arts<br />

to partnered research. Participated in day-long “Target Salon”: brainstorming with<br />

representatives <strong>of</strong> the Target Corporation on opportunities and parameters for partnered<br />

research.<br />

Worked with Illustration Faculty, RISD Media + Partners and representatives <strong>of</strong> the Hasbro<br />

Corporation to establish a curriculum in 3-D modeling and character design.<br />

Worked with principals <strong>of</strong> the MIT Gambits Lab, funded by the government <strong>of</strong> Singapore, to<br />

establish internships in game design innovation at MIT for spring semester ’09. Five<br />

RISD Illustration students are currently participating.<br />

Conceived and co-developed “Electric Book”, a team-taught Illustration course <strong>of</strong>fering for<br />

spring ’10, re-envisioning traditional storybook structure in a touch screen electronic<br />

format.<br />

Opened dialog on a formalized shared curriculum in animation with the Department <strong>of</strong> Film<br />

Animation and Video.<br />

Scheduled 104 courses for 255 department majors and 35 faculty.<br />

Oversaw departmental budget <strong>of</strong> $1.2 million.<br />

Member <strong>of</strong> departmental search committee, author <strong>of</strong> job description for Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

June 2003-present. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, Illustration Department<br />

Chair, Faculty Steering Committee. Moderated the college-wide Faculty Meeting and oversaw<br />

the organization <strong>of</strong> the agenda. As “Voice <strong>of</strong> the Faculty”, met regularly with the President,<br />

Provost, Trustees and Vice President for Finance. In 2007, initiated and negotiated<br />

revision <strong>of</strong> the committee structure to improve communication with administration,<br />

establishing three subcommittees meeting regularly with specific members <strong>of</strong> the<br />

administration. Negotiated new status including teaching release for the Committee Chair.<br />

Initiated and moderated three Faculty congresses, day-long forums for exchange <strong>of</strong> ideas<br />

on the school’s mission and shared goals.<br />

Recipient <strong>of</strong> the 2005 John R. Frazier Award for Excellence in Teaching.


Chair, Illustration Curriculum Committee, involved in focusing and extending the<br />

departmental <strong>of</strong>ferings and overarching mission. Helped to develop and realize the<br />

department’s Online Illustrated Catalog, a first at RISD, which details every course <strong>of</strong>fered<br />

with extended written descriptions, examples <strong>of</strong> student work, affinities with other courses<br />

and connections to potential career tracks.<br />

Developed and co-taught Virtual Reality <strong>Design</strong> for Science, a collaborative course with<br />

Brown University Department <strong>of</strong> Computer Science. Eight RISD students and eight Brown<br />

students work on visualization designs for aspects <strong>of</strong> the aerodynamics <strong>of</strong> bat flight and<br />

arterial blood flow for the “CAVE” virtual reality facility at Brown, 2002-2008.<br />

Advisor to Daniel Keefe on the development <strong>of</strong> “Drawing on Air” haptic virtual reality<br />

drawing interface, 2006.<br />

Lectured at the 2004 Winter Conference on Brain Research: Natural Media and Artistic<br />

Process in Scientific Visualization (within the group presentation: Applying Lessons <strong>of</strong><br />

Visual Art to the study <strong>of</strong> the Brain).<br />

Advisor to user study by Daniel Acevedo and Cullen Jackson on the design <strong>of</strong> visualization<br />

icons in relation to perceptual psychology, March-May 2003.<br />

Developed and taught Senior Painting Seminar with the goal <strong>of</strong> familiarizing Illustration<br />

students interest in Fine Arts with issues <strong>of</strong> 20th century and contemporary critical art<br />

theory.<br />

Taught courses in painting, drawing and Artistic Anatomy, with field trips to the Brown<br />

Evolutionary Biology Lab for direct anatomical study.<br />

Organized and juried the department’s Yale/Norfolk Summer Scholarship nominations,<br />

working with the department’s nominees to develop their fine art portfolios.<br />

Working with a gift from a RISD trustee, expanded and re-designed the department’s gallery,<br />

classroom space, studio furniture, hallway exhibition space, student homespace and<br />

departmental signage in order to improve department morale and learning conditions.<br />

Conceived, wrote and edited Illustration News, bi-weekly departmental newsletter.<br />

Served as a member <strong>of</strong> the committee to establish RISD’s Digital Media Department. Wrote<br />

much <strong>of</strong> the proposal and presented it to the Faculty Meeting.<br />

Participated in discussion group on RISD/Brown collaboration, leading to the development<br />

<strong>of</strong> Virtual Reality <strong>Design</strong> for Science<br />

Chaired the search for an Illustration Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor with digital specialization.<br />
