The <strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ical</strong> <strong>nurse</strong> specialist <strong>in</strong> <strong>upper</strong> <strong>GI</strong> <strong>cancers</strong><br />

(your key worker) is part of <strong>the</strong> team of<br />

healthcare professionals who will be look<strong>in</strong>g<br />

after you dur<strong>in</strong>g and follow<strong>in</strong>g your treatment.<br />

Upper <strong>GI</strong> <strong>cancers</strong> can <strong>in</strong>volve oesophagus,<br />

stomach, pancreas, gall bladder, duodenum,<br />

and liver. This <strong>nurse</strong> has specialist knowledge<br />

and experience <strong>in</strong> <strong>upper</strong> <strong>GI</strong> <strong>cancers</strong> to support<br />

you through your treatment. Here at PAH we<br />

aim to provide you with diagnosis, advice,<br />

treatment and support to meet your <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />

needs.<br />

<strong>What</strong> <strong>do</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ical</strong> <strong>nurse</strong><br />

<strong>specialists</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>upper</strong> <strong>GI</strong><br />

<strong>cancers</strong> <strong>do</strong>?<br />

Be<strong>in</strong>g told you may have a cancer or have<br />

been diagnosed with an <strong>upper</strong> <strong>GI</strong> cancer<br />

can be a very difficult time for you and your<br />

family. Often, you may have anxieties about<br />

a number of issues relat<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> diagnosis<br />

and treatment. The CNS can offer support and<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation at any stage <strong>in</strong> your illness, and<br />

can also provide a useful l<strong>in</strong>k between you and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r hospital teams, and at home. If you are<br />

admitted to hospital for any reason please let<br />

your CNS know.<br />

Your <strong>upper</strong> <strong>GI</strong> <strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ical</strong> <strong>nurse</strong> specialist can<br />

Your local <strong>upper</strong> <strong>GI</strong> CNS is based at Pr<strong>in</strong>cess<br />

Alexandra Hospital <strong>in</strong> Harlow. She works closely<br />

with <strong>the</strong> oesophagogastric team at University<br />

College Lon<strong>do</strong>n Hospital, and <strong>the</strong> hepatobilary<br />

team at Royal Free Hampstead.<br />

Your <strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ical</strong> <strong>nurse</strong> specialist, Cate Simmons, is<br />

available to speak or meet you from Monday to<br />

Friday, 8am until 4pm. This can be on <strong>the</strong> ward,<br />

<strong>in</strong> Outpatients department, or by telephone.<br />
