When the economic recession worsened in recent months,
the number of homeless families sleeping in
New York City’s shelters reached its
highest point since modern homelessness began.
Accelerating job losses, a widening housing affordability
gap and flawed City policies are largely responsible.
Permanent housing programs are a proven, cost-effective way to
stem family homelessness. Emergency shelter costs $38,000 per year
per family – half of which is paid by the City and State. However,
targeting Federal housing aid to homeless families will reduce the
family shelter population and save taxpayer dollars – a high priority
given the fiscal crisis. The Coalition will continue to partner with the
New York City Congressional delegation to work toward this end.
