<strong>50</strong> <strong>Years</strong> Daresbury Laboratory Inspection of magnets and vacuum vessel for the high brightness lattice upgrade to the SRS in 1987. In the 1980's the demand for an improvement to the brightness of the source emerged. As early as 1980, Vic Suller had outlined an advantageous modification to the magnetic arrangement of the SRS. By doubling the number of quadrupole magnets it would be possible to keep the SRS competitive even with the new sources planned for construction in the 1990's elsewhere in the world. The structure of the foot and mouth disease virus was solved using data acquired at the SRS in the late 1980s, and was the first animal virus structure to be determined in Europe. In the 1980's the demand for an improvement (to parameters and characteristics of the source) emerged. 38
