BROADER HORIZONS
ISSUE 2, 2012

Celebrations mark our
anniversary year
Tribute to
Bev Philben
We started the term with the performance of the Middle
and Senior School musical Anne of Green Gables. It was an
exciting way of starting the term. Pride, delight, amazement
and just being ‘overwhelmed by the depth of talent’ were
the mix of emotions felt by all. The singing, dancing,
acting and artistic development of the characters that was
unexpected in such young performers was a hallmark of the
production. The girls loved the production and I suspect the
experience will be responsible for many great memories.
Later this year we will be producing our first Junior School
musical to be staged at the Arts Centre Gold Coast. There is
much excitement among the young girls and staff so enquire
now about seats to Alice in Wonderland.
The academic result for the Year 12 class of 2011 is a
source of great pleasure for the School. All girls gained the
equivalent of an OP 1 to 16. St Hilda’s School was named in
The Courier-Mail as the top Queensland school for OP results
1 to 15. This measure indicates the strength of our academic
program across the range of abilities.
We had a very high number of girls present for the OP
pathway (87 percent) and for all others, we designed
academic programs of substance that enabled the girls to
graduate with results that accorded them with Certificate II
or Certificate III qualifications.
We are determined that every girl will finish at the School
with academic success (while acknowledging that this may
still mean that there are many pathways to achieve success).
The results of last year were the creation of a culture that
accepted academic diversity while giving all aspiration to
achieve their best.
Later this year the School will unveil its Centenary Wall in the
area between the Centre for Scientific Learning and Research
and the Reeves Building. This wall has been designed to mimic
the shape of the ammonite, which appears on the School’s
crest and harks back to the tradition of St Hilda of Whitby.
The wall will have inscribed on it the names of every girl who
has attended the School since its beginnings in 1912. We have
also attempted to find the names of all staff who have been
part of the School since 1912. In all, more than 15,000 names
will appear on this wall.
The purpose of this wall will be to record and thereby honour,
the contribution of all who have been a part of this School’s
journey across its first 100 years. The opening of this project
in August will be a great moment in the history of the School.
This Centenary Wall was inspired by the idea that every girl who has
been a part of this School matters! That is an idea that matters!
Mr Peter Crawley
St Hilda’s School community came together on Thursday
31 May in a moving service to celebrate and give thanks for
the life of Miss Bev Philben who passed away on 25 May
2012. The service was conducted by the School Chaplain
Father Andrew Schmidt.
The school gymnasium was packed to capacity as tributes
were provided by Head of School Mr Peter Crawley,
Father Harry Reuss, Father Sid Rogers, Old Girls’ Association
President Mrs Debbie Buckley, teachers and students.
Miss Philben began her teaching career at St Hilda’s in
1969 and in 2012, celebrated 43 years of outstanding service
to the School. She was a dedicated teacher of Religious
Education and extended her passion for teaching to the
Sunday School classes at St Peter’s Church, Southport.
Always prepared to give of her time, Miss Philben was a
constant supporter of the girls at early morning rowing,
cross country and swimming carnivals and House musicals
as well as community events like the Fete.
She also volunteered her time within the Old Girls’ Association,
first as secretary, occasionally as treasurer and then as
president from 1978 to 1981. Miss Philben particularly enjoyed
seeing Old Girls return to the school as parents.
As OGA secretary from 1995 to 2012, year after year she
would be busy with memberships, reunions and general
communications.
When the news of Bev’s passing reached the OGA
Facebook community, we were inundated with hundreds
of messages recalling a fabulous teacher, one who showed
kindness and compassion and believed in the spirit of
St Hilda’s School.
St Hilda’s Tops Queensland’s
OP 1-15 Results
It was also the first K-12 school in the world to have its own
iPhone App (iStHildas) written by the Blackboard Mobile
Central team, available from the iTunes Store and the Android
Marketplace. The same group was responsible for writing the
first app of this type for Stanford University in the United States.
“To support the program, we installed an extensive wireless
network throughout the 14-hectare campus,” said Mr Crawley.
“The iPad allows the girls to access school email, the Blackboard
LMS, the Internet, to word process, present information and
access a large number of education-related apps.
“Perhaps the biggest innovation has been the move to iBooks.
Heads of Faculty have been doing ground-breaking work with
suppliers to provide textbooks in a format that allows them to be
read on the iPad and staff have created their own iBooks, inclusive
of video demonstrations, to assist the girls with subject selections.
We plan to pursue this area strongly in the years to come.”
There has been a great deal of national and international
interest in the St Hilda’s iPad program. St Hilda’s has hosted
visiting delegations from schools across Queensland, NSW
and Victoria. Senior staff have also presented the school’s
program and innovations at numerous education conferences
in Australia, New Zealand and the United States.
St Hilda’s School has been named as one of Queensland’s bestperforming
schools in the recent Queensland Studies Authority report.
An astounding 97 per cent of St Hilda’s 2011 OP-eligible students
received an OP score of between 1 and 15 – the highest score
achieved in the State.
Head of School Mr Peter Crawley was absolutely delighted with the
result which he said was rewarding for the students and staff and
reinforced the school’s approach to new learning programs.
“The 2011 Year 12 outcomes are extremely encouraging and reflect
a strong level of academic excellence which is being achieved
across all year levels,” said Mr Crawley.
He said that St Hilda’s was earning an international reputation for
the delivery of curriculum with innovative technology solutions
driving change in everyday life for students and staff as well as
new learning experiences.
The School introduced the use of iPads from Years 5 to 10 in
2011, with Years 11 and 12 girls choosing between iPads and
laptop devices.
In partnership with Blackboard International, St Hilda’s was the
first K-12 school in the world to adopt the Mobile Learn iPad app
to access online course materials from the Blackboard learning
management system.
St Hilda’s School romped home in the Gold Coast
Mother’s Day Classic event, winning the accolade
for the largest school team in Queensland –
and Australia!
A total of 297 members of the St Hilda’s community
– students, staff, parents and Old Girls – supported the
fun run/walk over either 4km or 8km on Sunday
13 May.
This year the Mother’s Day Classic raised more than
$4 million across Australia, much needed funds for
breast cancer research.

It is great to be
Under Eight!
Pre-Prep to Year 2 students participated in an Under Eight’s celebration on Friday 8 June.
Pre-Prep began their celebration with rotational activities including making puppets, storytelling
and craft activities. The morning culminated with a shared morning tea. Parents enthusiastically
participated in the activities and enjoyed the opportunity to interact with other classes and parents
during the morning.
Prep to Year 2 students began their celebration with a shared picnic lunch on the grass area outside
Pre-Prep. A sneak peek at the Junior School musical Alice in Wonderland opened the afternoon.
The students then broke up into groups consisting of Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 students, rotating
around a variety of activities including dress-ups, a weaving wall, storytelling and pavement chalk
drawing, to name a few.
Year 1 teacher and Junior School Curriculum Coordinator Mrs Melissa Wilkins said the girls from
all year levels participated enthusiastically and thoroughly enjoyed the creative aspect of all the
activities. They also enjoyed the opportunity to interact with girls in other year levels including some
of the senior students who also attended to assist.
Most of the girls agreed, ‘it was great to be under eight!’
A capital experience
Leaders inspired by
yLEAD workshop
Middle School leaders participated in a
one-day workshop conducted by the yLead
Association this term.
“This was a wonderful opportunity for
the girls to gain some inspiration and
knowledge to support their roles, as well
as establishing networks with other Middle
School leaders,” said Head of Middle School
Mrs Susan Sanburg.
The following comments from the girls,
encapsulate the day:
Today at yLead we were taught the meaning
of leadership; not giving up, listening to
others, trying the impossible, and doing
something to the best of our ability. We
listened to two guest speakers - Jack Sinclair
and Rowie McEvoy. Jack talked about his
dreams and how he accomplished them
with the steps and preparation that he did.
Rowie McEvoy taught us to always be happy,
positive and passionate; to look for the good
things in life. - Matilda Brown
6
The Year 7 visit to the nation’s capital, Canberra offered our students a unique opportunity to experience
Australia’s parliamentary system and to engage with our cultural heritage.
The girls participated in a wide range of programs, which enhanced their understanding of how Australians
are governed and the electoral process.
Visits to the Australian War Memorial and Museum helped them to explore and appreciate our Australian
history and heritage while students with an interest in science were inspired by Questacon and the CSIRO.
“Learning experiences such as these are important as they can hone a student’s interests, encouraging them
to set goals and work hard,” said Head of Middle School Mrs Susan Sanburg.
It was such a good event to get our minds
thinking and to teach us really important
messages about life. It taught us about
motivational skills and to be happy! That was
my favourite message of the day. I thought
Rowie was the most amazing speaker
and that she taught us some of the most
valuable life lessons. I am really keen to talk
to the girls about what yLead is all about.
All readers are winners
Year 7 girls jump
to save lives
Encouraging girls to read is important as it affects everything they
do - at school as well as in the future – and the annual Readers’
Cup competition attracts keen readers across the Middle School.
Indeed, the Years 6/7 and Years 8/9 Readers’ Cup teams enjoyed
the fierce competition encountered at the Regional Finals held at
the end of Term 2.
An in-school competition was held in Term 1, involving some 40
girls in Years 6 to 9. Teams representing Years 6/7 and Years 8/9
were chosen from the winners of this round and they went on to
read six books each for the Regional Finals.
The Year 6/7 team of Jane Andrews, Mai Sugimoto, Natalie Douglas
and Zoe Wei pitted their reading strengths against students of 20 other
teams, finishing a respectable 10th place in such a large contest.
The final was won by Hillcrest Christian College, followed by
Arundel State School, with a tie for third between three schools,
evidencing the tight competition between entrants.
Mad hatters aid
cancer research
The Year 9 Leadership Team hosted a Middle School morning
tea with a difference in Term 2.
The girls adopted a Mad Hatter’s theme to support the Cancer
Council’s vital work in cancer research, education programs
and patient support services.
Judged to have the best hat in each year level were
Clare McMath in Year 7, Rebecca Jiang Year 8 and
Aishling Knox Year 9.
The Years 8/9 team of Georgia Sartor, Jessica White,
Amen Karim and Winnie Zhang finished third in the Regional
Finals, also won by Hillcrest Christian College, with All Saints
coming in at a close second.
Library Manager Mrs Robyn Markus-Sandgren said the girls
obviously enjoyed the battle of the wits because they were
talking about next year’s competition as they headed home.
She said it was pleasing to see the number of girls who
participated in the St Hilda’s Readers’ Cup competitions.
Winnie, Georgia, Jessica and Amen decided early on just to enjoy
reading and meeting as a team over the term.
“Their relaxed and calm approach to the competition made for a
very pleasurable night,” said Mrs Markus-Sandgren.
The enthusiastic Year 7 girls, helped and encouraged by
their Year 9 Big Sisters, were involved in the Jump Rope
for Heart campaign in Term 2.
The girls were seen skipping their way through recess
and lunch times in order to raise funds for the
Heart Foundation.
Jump Rope for Heart involves young Australians in
fun and healthy challenges that encourage positive
attitudes to physical activity and heart health.
This community service activity saw more than $4000
raised by girls going to help save the lives of Australians
of all ages.
The culmination of this activity for the Year 7 Form
which raised the most money was a pizza lunch
celebration with their Big Sisters!
Talents shine in musical success
The success of Anne of Green Gables: The Musical has not only
helped St Hilda’s already glowing reputation as a patron of the
performing arts, but also allowed the School to showcase the
amazing array of student talents in these areas.
Victoria Bailey’s enchanting portrayal of the feisty Anne Shirley
and Rebecca Hale’s powerful and moving singing performances
together with Hannah Rigby’s unparalleled comedic ability were
just some of the incredible talent that is being displayed by the
girls involved in the arts.
Behind the scenes the talent was also clear, from the incredible
musicians who were so good many asked if the music was
recorded (no, they were just that good!) to the costumes, props
and set design and the backstage crew who worked the stage
like they had been born to it.
And while there were many who praised the show for its music,
singing, dancing and design, Head of Performing Arts Mr Jaron
Winter said he was most pleased by those who claimed it looked
like a professional show.
“These comments were a testament not only to the talent
of the cast and crew but also their dedication and hard work
during rehearsals - and that is the real success of this show!”
said Mr Winter.
Anne of Green Gables: The Musical was presented over three
performances at the Arts Centre Gold Coast from 27 to 28 April.
Happy Boarders
at St Hilda’s
: )
St Hilda’s/TSS Boarders’ Combined Social
The anticipation was evident as St Hilda’s boarders spent hours
preparing for the social held on a Friday night in Term 2 where they
were joined by boarders of TSS. The ‘Eighties’ theme had boarders
dressed in all sorts of creative and colourful outfits. Staff and boarders
had a wonderful time dancing the night away!
Achieving a balance
Staff encourage boarders to balance their lives by eating healthy
meals, exercising, sleeping a minimum of 8 hours each night, and
using their prep time wisely in order to better manage their test and
assignment schedule and to minimize their stress levels.
The Open Mic Night with TSS boarders was well-attended
and hugely successful. There were many quality
performances which were applauded by an appreciative
audience. A big thank-you goes to our Boarding Prefects
and supporters who popped mountains of popcorn,
compered the night and managed sound and lighting.
And we mustn’t forget our performers who rehearsed
their singing, dancing and piano and guitar playing and
probably stepped well outside of their comfort zone to
make this an enjoyable time for everyone.
Fleet blessed for
2012 season
Rowers, coaching staff and parent supporters gathered for the
Blessing of the Fleet on the Nerang River at TSS and to honour
past student Paris Wilson and her US-exchange buddy Cameron
O’Neill-Mullin on Saturday 19 May.
The squad of more than 60 rowers enjoyed getting the boats
onto the water for some early morning training before the official
Blessing of the Fleet by School Chaplain Father Andrew Schmidt.
The School’s new bright red eight, the Paris & Cameron, was
christened with Paris’ mother Mrs Sandie Wilson and Cameron’s
mother Mrs Trish O’Neill enjoying the chance to crack the
champagne over the new boat.
Andrews Cup Cross Country triumph!
St Hilda’s Cross Country team snatched victory in the Andrews
Cup competition – the first time the girls have brought home the
cup in 21 years!
A total of 75 students from Years 3 to 7 took part in the event
with all girls performing extremely well against athletes from the
nine other schools.
“We are proud of the girls’ work towards this achievement,”
said Andrews Cup coordinator Mr Brad Moore. “They trained
hard in the weeks leading up to the competition and the win
was well-deserved.”
He said it was extraordinary to see the level of support the
girls offered their team members throughout the day. St Hilda’s
individual age division results were:
9 Years/under 3rd
10 Years 1st
11 Years 4th
12 Years 5th
Within the team there were some excellent individual results:
Mr Brian Chapman for his expert coaching and enduring
enthusiasm for this event,” said Mr Moore.
A large number of equally enthusiastic parents travelled to
Ipswich on Thursday 1 May to support the girls and staff.

Old Girls win Ramsey match
St Hilda’s gymnasium was jumping with excitement for
the annual battle between the Old Girls/Ramsey girls
and the combined Seniors/Opens Basketball team on
Friday 1 June.
More than 150 spectators crowded the bleachers for the
annual Sherilee Ramsey Memorial Basketball match,
dedicated to our Sports Captain of 2006.
All players put in a tremendous effort – with some
funny on-court antics but victory belonged to the
combined Old Girls and Ramsey family.
Banksia and Tristania win the chase
St Hilda’s House Cross Country Carnivals ran back-to-back this term,
with the course being marked out across the campus due to wet
weather conditions.
The change of venue meant that many girls were able to see
the girls racing at different stages and supported their House
teammates throughout the event. Each girl who completed the
course under the time allowance received a point for their House.
Banksia won the day with 789 points, a point ahead of Melaleuca
(788), followed by Karragaroo (707), ensuring the battle lines are
already drawn for the next major House competition, the Athletics
Carnival in Term 3.
The Year 12 Boarders were delighted to win the Tug-o-War
contest against the Year 12 Daygirls, a ‘seriously’ fun competition
that followed the Cross Country. The boarders have won the
Boarders vs Daygirls swimming relay and the Tug-o-War, leaving
only the athletics challenge to be decided. Should be interesting!
The Junior School Inter-House Cross Country event saw some
wonderful participation from the young girls and excellent
personal results for athletes who were in training in the leadup
to the event. House spirit was evident with girls taking the
opportunity to wear their House colours with pride and display a
colourful line-up of House mascots.
Green is for Go and appropriately, Tristania won the chase on
675 points, well-ahead of Grevillea (539) and Acacia (534).
A girls’ day out to remember
More than 160 Senior School girls, their mothers and grandmothers joined forces in a stunning show of pride
for their school and each other this term.
The annual Mother-Daughter Luncheon, a long-held tradition of the School, was hosted by the Women’s
Auxiliary at the Sheraton Mirage Gold Coast on Saturday 12 May.
Old Girl and current parent Mrs Amy Goldschmeid was MC and led the special celebration in style. A spectacular
visual presentation by Taryn Williams showcased the Year 12 girls’ favourite all-time photos of their mums,
put to the music of Bette Midler’s award-winning soundtrack, Wind Beneath my Wings.
The tributes by the girls to their mothers were humorous and entertaining and were followed by a vivid fashion
parade of formal dresses from Herz design.
