Law Practice<br />

<strong>Eugene</strong> <strong>Derényi</strong> heads the Patent Section of <strong>Stikeman</strong> <strong>Elliott</strong>'s Intellectual Property Group and is co-head of the Patent<br />

Litigation section. His practice focuses on all aspects of patents, including prosecution, litigation, and licensing in a wide<br />

range of industries, including oil and gas, information technology and biotechnology. He also practises intellectual<br />

property related business law, including analyzing corporate intellectual property portfolios.<br />

Mr. <strong>Derényi</strong> has considerable patent agency experience including drafting and prosecuting Canadian, American and PCT<br />

patent applications. In addition, Mr. <strong>Derényi</strong> has trademark agency experience.<br />

Mr. <strong>Derényi</strong> has conducted patent litigation before the Federal Court, trial and appeal divisions, including a patent case<br />

which resulted in the first successful enforcement of a patent for a gene in Canada.<br />

Professional Activities<br />

Mr. <strong>Derényi</strong> is a member of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada serving on its Information Technology and<br />

Competitiveness Committees; Intellectual Property Law (Patent Section). He is also a member of the Intellectual Property<br />

Law and Information Technology & Electronic Commerce Sections of the Canadian Bar Association and the American Bar<br />

Association.<br />

Has written extensively on intellectual property law and is co-author of Intellectual Property Law of Canada, patent<br />

chapter, Juris Publishing.<br />
