Law Practice
Eugene Derényi heads the Patent Section of Stikeman Elliott's Intellectual Property Group and is co-head of the Patent
Litigation section. His practice focuses on all aspects of patents, including prosecution, litigation, and licensing in a wide
range of industries, including oil and gas, information technology and biotechnology. He also practises intellectual
property related business law, including analyzing corporate intellectual property portfolios.
Mr. Derényi has considerable patent agency experience including drafting and prosecuting Canadian, American and PCT
patent applications. In addition, Mr. Derényi has trademark agency experience.
Mr. Derényi has conducted patent litigation before the Federal Court, trial and appeal divisions, including a patent case
which resulted in the first successful enforcement of a patent for a gene in Canada.
Professional Activities
Mr. Derényi is a member of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada serving on its Information Technology and
Competitiveness Committees; Intellectual Property Law (Patent Section). He is also a member of the Intellectual Property
Law and Information Technology & Electronic Commerce Sections of the Canadian Bar Association and the American Bar
Association.
Has written extensively on intellectual property law and is co-author of Intellectual Property Law of Canada, patent
chapter, Juris Publishing.
