Consumer Choice Hospital
St. Luke’s voted Siouxland’s # 1 preferred hospital two years in a row!
Award given by: 2009 and 2010 National Research Corportation
I have been truly amazed by the extraordinary sense of community during
our recent floods. Neighbors helping neighbors, strangers lending a
hand to those in need—there are countless examples of our community
joining together to protect our homes, our work…our livelihood.
As a community hospital, St. Luke’s is very fortunate to call Siouxland
home. While your support during St. Luke’s successes has been
tremendous, it has been Siouxland’s compassion during challenging
times that’s shown us just how vital this community is to our people
and organizations like St. Luke’s.
Because of you, St. Luke’s has enhanced our cardiology services in the
past year, announced expansion plans in Morningside and welcomed a
new clinic opportunity in the Singing Hills neighborhood. Siouxland
has remained committed to St. Luke’s, and we remain committed to
this community.
While the flooding will continue for sometime, we know that Siouxland
will thrive. Siouxlanders who came together during adversity are now
joining in the efforts to help our community heal.
Thank you for allowing us to be a part of this great place. A community
that we are proud to serve and patients that we are privileged to care
for. St. Luke’s...for the life of Siouxland.
Committed to Quality
At St. Luke’s, our commitment to quality has never
been stronger. As we set out to achieve American
Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet Recognition ®
in 2014, an honor awarded to only the top 6% of
hospitals nationwide, careful steps are being taken to
ensure that nursing staff is given full support by our
organization along the journey. In 2011, St. Luke’s
presented nurses with the opportunity to take part in a
grant program, providing eligible employees enhanced
tuition assistance to attend a Bachelor of Science in
Nursing or Masters of Science in Nursing at Allen
College in Waterloo. Approximately 10% of nurses are
taking advantage of this grant. Providing educational
advancement is one more example of how St. Luke’s
is dedicated to providing the best outcome for every
patient, every time.
“I feel privileged to work
for an organization that is
willing to invest so much
back into its employees and
am grateful for St. Luke’s
tuition assistance as
I attained my Master’s
Degree. My preceptor
experiences with community
physicians and Nurse
Practitioners and the
evidence-based, research driven
curriculum broadened my outlook on the
future of healthcare. I am eager to watch as
my coworkers also embark on this educational
journey. Together, we can advance the processes
at St. Luke’s to provide outstanding patient care.”
St. Luke’s College Expansion
The blueprint for St. Luke’s College calls for facility expansion
and technology advancement. As the need for more healthcare
professionals grows, the College is preparing for the future by
expanding its current facility.
“Our expansion will help create a more effective learning
environment for our students and faculty, a place that reflects our
commitment to the vitality of healthcare in Siouxland,” says Mike Stiles,
Chancellor of St. Luke’s College. “The future of healthcare depends on
our ability to train and prepare
top notch students today—
the healthcare professionals
that will care for us tomorrow.”
ST. LUKE’S PILLARS OF EXCELLENCE
Pursuit of Excellence
When caring for a patient, it is not just the
professional care from hospital staff, but also the
support and aid of family that leads to a patient’s best
outcome. That’s why St. Luke’s is embracing a new
culture of Patient and Family-Centered Care. This
approach will allow the families of patients to be active
in the recovery process, resulting in a comforting hospital
experience and easier transition home.
To jump-start the process and better understand how
to create a family-centered atmosphere, a diverse group
of healthcare professionals, including St. Luke’s staff,
board members and physicians, attended a Patient and
Family-Centered Care Conference in early 2011. Funded
in part by St. Luke’s Children’s Miracle Network, this
conference gave insight on how to return care to the
bedside and more fully engage families in the care
process. Matt Romkey, St. Luke’s Children’s Miracle
Network Manager, says “From the perspective of
Children’s Miracle Network, we see many families enter
St. Luke’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in critical
situations. By supporting this conference and the concept
of Patient and Family-Centered Care, we are embracing
the chance to improve the hospital experience for each
family and the outcome for intensive care babies.”
The Patient and Family-Centered Care approach
will be adopted hospital-wide, but initial efforts are
being piloted in St. Luke’s Birth Center.
Two new Neonatal Nurse Practitioners for
the NICU were added including Andrea Orr,
hired in June 2010, and Veronica Bjornson,
hired in June 2011. They join Dr. Tom Wilson
and Dr. Raul Banagale to provide 24/7
coverage for St. Luke’s tiniest patients.
More than 4 out of 5 families
choose to have their babies at St. Luke’s.
Take a tour from the comfort of your own home
at www.stlukes.org. We offer virtual tours of our
private rooms and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
along with other services.
Bringing Patient and Family-Centered Care to the Birth Center
Adopting liberal visitation policies for
the NICU*, parents can define who
may come into the secure unit to visit
their baby, allowing for siblings and
extended family to be involved in the
care process. Safety for the baby
is still in high regard. Families are
coached on noise restrictions, hand
washing guidelines and staying in
in the patient’s private room
to respect others in the unit.
All St. Luke’s NICU* staff have gone
through enhanced training including the
recent Preemie for a Day interactive
workshop. Participants not only learn
and discuss ways to improve the care
and outcomes of their tiniest patients
but also experience the reasons for
approaching care in a developmentally
supportive manner.
Labor and Delivery has also made strides
with new processes. After delivery, a baby
is able to stay with mom in her labor
and delivery room. At the same time, a
resource nurse supports the baby’s care
needs such as lab work and shots in the
room instead of the baby going to the
nursery as practiced traditionally.
The Birth Center has enhanced lactation
services. Additional nurses have received
lactation training so both the NICU* and
Post-Partum now have dedicated lactation
specialists. In addition, St. Luke’s Children’s
Miracle Network funded the installation of
breast pumps in each NICU room, which is
a pivotal point of care for NICU babies as
breastfeeding has been shown to reduce time
spent in the hospital and improved development.
New Services Enhance St. Luke’s Heart Care
A new cardiac procedure is bringing added peace of mind
to heart patients in Siouxland. In March, Dr. Edward Zajac of
Cardiovascular Associates (CVA) and Director of Cardiac
Catheterization and Interventional Cardiology at St. Luke’s
began performing radial artery access.
A relatively new cardiac procedure in the U.S., radial
access allows a surgeon to access a patient’s heart through the
wrist, rather than the groin, to diagnose and treat arterial
disease. Zajac is the only Siouxland physician currently
offering this new alternative, exclusively at St. Luke’s.
“The beauty of radial access is the very low complication
rate overall,” says Zajac. “That’s one of the reasons I became
interested in this technique. It offers patients a new alternative to
traditional interventional procedures, with very positive results.”
Patients Experience Less Discomfort, Pain
During radial access, a small puncture is made in the
patient’s wrist to access the radial artery where a catheter is
then threaded into the coronary arteries. After the procedure,
which takes around 35 minutes, patients are able to sit upright
and are generally allowed to go home two hours later once a
compression device is removed from their wrist. Overall, the
technique causes patients less discomfort and pain and
fewer complications.
The patient experience after radial access is in contrast
to the experience after traditional interventional procedures.
Typically, surgeons access a patient’s heart through their groin.
After the procedure, the patient lies flat on their back in bed
for four to five hours to prevent the wound from re-opening.
“As patients become more
aware of the cardiology
options available,
I do believe more will look
at this technique as the best
solution for them,” adds Zajac.
Only a small number of coronary
procedures in the U.S.—around 4.5% —
are currently performed using radial
access although the procedure is very
popular in Europe. Rigorous training
is needed by both surgeons and
hospital staff before the technique
can be performed.
“Patient safety and comfort are top
priorities for us. In combination, both
can help lead to positive patient
outcomes,” says Zajac.
After radial artery access, a
compression device (pictured
above) is placed on the
patient’s wrist. The new
technique causes minimal
discomfort and offers very
low complication rates.
St. Luke’s works closely with Cardiovascular Associates
(CVA), the only cardiology group with privileges at St. Luke’s,
to ensure heart patients quicker access to St. Luke’s 24-hour
Cath Lab.
Together, St. Luke’s and CVA provide regional
outreach care:
• Remote services including non-invasive studies such as
echocardiography, stress tests, vascular Doppler studies
and Holter monitors.
• EKG network offers added convenience; EKGs are
taken at a patient’s local hospital and then transmitted to
St. Luke’s where they are interpreted by a CVA physician.
St. Luke’s has also added electrophysiology services,
enhancing the ability to study and treat patients with abnormal
heartbeats without major surgery.
New Unit Honors
Impact of Cardiology Physician
The doors have opened on a new unit designed
especially for St. Luke’s cardiology patients. St. Luke’s
recently unveiled its Coronary Care Unit, located on
the hospital’s sixth floor.
Combining excellence in cardiology care with patient
comfort, the unit features state-of-the-art iBeds offering music,
translation and charting capabilities. Spacious, private rooms
also offer patients a peaceful place to heal. The unit is
staffed with nurses specifically trained in coronary care
providing expertise for patients after a heart procedure.
In addition to its vital role in a patient’s recovery
process, the unit also holds special meaning for the friends,
family and colleagues of Dr. Kenneth Tjeerdsma. A wellknown
CVA physician who made a positive difference to
hundreds of patients during his 13-year career in Siouxland,
Tjeerdsma passed away unexpectedly in 2009.
In honor of his positive impact on Siouxland cardiology
care, staff of CVA graciously donated a gift in Tjeerdsma’s
name to purchase a sophisticated nurses’ station.
“CVA had a strong desire to give to a project that would
directly impact the patients that Dr. Tjeerdsma was so
passionate about caring for,” says Susan Unger, Vice President
of Development at St. Luke’s. “Their gift to the Coronary Care
Unit will enhance our staff’s care of cardiology patients for
years to come.”
Their gift to the Coronary Care Unit was a perfect fit
with Tjeerdsma’s own healthcare philosophy adds Dr. Jon
Peacock of CVA.
Family members of the late Dr. Kenneth
Tjeerdsma were on hand for the dedication
of the Coronary Care Unit’s nurses station
in his honor including (l-r) daughter
Elizabeth, wife Melissa and sons Kenneth
and William (not pictured is son John.)
“Dr. Tjeerdsma played a key role in advancing cardiology
services in Siouxland. He was committed to his patients
and that dedication showed in the many lives he touched
during his career. The gift to St. Luke’s Coronary Care Unit,
which will help enhance the hospital’s cardiology services,
was very fitting given Dr. Tjeerdsma’s strong commitment to
providing quality patient care,” says Peacock.
