At At the core the of every core gift is a connection. The 

connection might stem from a shared belief in 

St. Luke’s mission. Some are built over time, 

maybe as a work obligation first and later as 

part of a personal desire to help others in need. 

Still, other connections form unexpectedly, during 

an unplanned medical crisis. Whatever your 

connection to St. Luke’s, we are very grateful 

to consider you part of St. Luke’s family. 

While the economy has presented many financial 

challenges, we are fortunate to look back on 

a record-setting 2010 and thank you for your 

unwavering support. St. Luke’s Health Foundation 

was inspired by your commitment to support 

the education of students in St. Luke’s College 

with your financial support of the College’s 

expansion project. 

You made a difference in the lives of Siouxland families through gifts to St. Luke’s 

Children’s Miracle Network. Your generosity will make a positive impact on the 

more than 14,000 pediatric visits to St. Luke’s each year, through the purchase 

of necessary equipment and technology, and in the process, provide parents— 

and the youngest of patients—with added peace of mind. 

You’ve also helped us recognize St. Luke’s most dedicated healthcare professionals 

through your support of our Healthcare Heroes program. These heroes have 

been just as touched by your desire to honor their hard work as you have been 

impacted by their healing and comforting touch.

his wife Lynn to look for ways

They long ago realized their responsibility to support the community that 

supports their livelihood. Since their move to Sioux City 28 years ago, 

Dr. Mike and Lynn Kafka have opened their eyes to the needs of Siouxland and 

become two of the community’s most dedicated advocates. 

Their work with St. Luke’s Children’s Miracle Network and the families that rely 

upon it helped them realize that one often receives more from giving than they 

do from receiving. Parents of two daughters, the couple knows first-hand how 

reassuring a resource like St. Luke’s Children’s Miracle Network can be during 

the most difficult of times and how their gifts are helping children thrive.

have been long-time donors to St. Luke’s 

Health Foundation. “I tell people to 

give more than they think they can 

give,” says Perley. “If you wait until 

you believe you have enough, you’ll 

never give. It’s been important to me 

and my wife to find causes that we 

believe in and share all we can.”

Walk the halls of Thompson Electric and you’re likely to discover a common 

thread among employees—a strong desire to get involved. 

In fact, the company’s mission statement places just as much credence on 

community involvement as it does on its own customers and staff. The 

company encourages its employees to give and practices what it preaches 

by supporting projects that positively touch Siouxland, projects like St. Luke’s 

College’s current expansion and the completed renovation of St. Luke’s Birth 

Center five years ago. The company funds initiatives that share a similar 

mission to their own says Thompson Electric CEO Skip Perley. Given the

The students of St. Luke’s College represent

learning in an environment that reflects the 

quality of care they will give to their patients, 

St. Luke’s College is expanding their campus 

to Physician Center One, enhancing the 

College’s current classrooms and laboratories. 

The expansion project is an exciting step 

in the future of St. Luke’s College, the only 

hospital-based institution of its kind in 

Siouxland. It serves as a powerful example 

of the importance of philanthropy, because 

the College’s plans are entirely dependent 

on the generosity of donors who believe in 

the mission of St. Luke’s College. Gifts to

HEALTH FOUNDATION 

The 2010 Caring for Kids Radiothon, sponsored by Burger 

King and Bomgaars and broadcast live on Clear Channel 

stations KG95, KISS 107.1 and Z98, raised over $113,000 

in just three days, 100% of which stays in the Siouxland 

area. Gifts to St. Luke’s Children’s Miracle Network are used 

to purchase new equipment and supplies and to fund special 

services and health education for children and families.

OVERWHELMING 

In 2010, St. Luke’s employees and physician 

partners raised over $140,000 for the 2 Ways to Give 2 Ways 

to Care Campaign, benefiting St. Luke’s Health Foundation and 

the United Way of Siouxland. Employees’ generosity was 

overwhelming as the campaign saw a 70% increase in new 

donors. In addition, the successful campaign raised $31,000 

in new dollars, with gifts benefiting numerous projects including 

the purchase of new seating for St. Luke’s Park View Café and 

Auxiliary Dining Room—both areas of the hospital that staff, 

patients and visitors enjoy each day.
