Dear Parish Family of St. Thomas,
Second Homily
Happy Palm Sunday to all of you! Today is also called Passion Sunday since we read the
Gospel of the Passion of Our Lord. This is the beginning of Holy Week. It is the holiest and
most spiritual week of the year.
According to our little black book, the blessing and use of palms for the liturgy of Palm Sunday is thought to
have started in the eighth century in what is today Germany. Palms soon became incorporated into Catholic
liturgical tradition. However, they’re not used in all countries on this day. Palm branches are not easy to
obtain in some European countries, so a substitution is made. In Italy, for example, many churches use olive
branches. In other countries, spruce branches or pussy willows are used. As a result, today is also known
as Willow Sunday in England, Poland and Lithuania. In countries, such as Hungary and Spain, flowers are
used in addition to palms. In those countries, today is also known as Flowering Sunday (or some variation).
From Holy Thursday, through Good Friday to Holy Saturday, we celebrate the Triduum, which culminates
with the celebration of Easter Sunday. It celebrates the deepest mystery of our faith and our life—Jesus
passion, death and Resurrection. We are people who walk with the Lord on His and our journey of life.
Blessed John Paul II in his homily of March 1999 said:
“The celebration of Holy Week begins with the “Hosanna!” of Palm Sunday and culminates in the “crucify
him!” of Good Friday. But this is not a contradiction; rather it is the heart of the mystery the liturgy wants to
proclaim: Jesus willingly gave himself up to his passion; he did not find himself crushed by superior forces
(cf.John 10:18). It was he himself who, in discerning the Father’s will, understood that his hour had come and
he accepted it with the free obedience of the Son and with infinite love for mankind. We are here...to receive
this message from the Father who loves us. We can ask ourselves: what does he want of us? He wants us to
look at Jesus and be willing to follow him in his passion in order to share in his Resurrection… The “hosanna”
and the “crucify him” thus become the way to measure how one conceives of life, faith and Christian witness:
we must not be discouraged by defeat nor exalted by victory because, as with Christ, the only victory is fidelity
to the mission received from the Father.”
As part of the process of becoming holy, we must also recognize that we are sinners who need to hear God’s
forgiving love. When is the last time you went to confession? Probably, not for a while! So what are you
waiting for?? Come and celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Monday at 6:00pm. We will have nine
priests here to celebrate the Sacrament. No waiting! No pain! No excuses! God’s love is waiting for you!
Will this be a Holy week for you?? You are invited to come and live the week with the Lord. Yes, the
Liturgies are longer than usual, but they speak for themselves and they are wonderfully celebrated at St.
Thomas. But come and see for yourself! Come and pray for yourself! Come and live for yourself!
Your Pastor,
Rev. Thomas R. Rzepiela
P.S. Don’t forget your Easter gift for St. Thomas Parish! We seek your generosity as good stewards.
Common Names: Crown of Thorns, Christ Plant,
Christ Thorn
Scientific name: Euphorbia Milii
The common names allude to the legend that the crown of
thorns worn by Christ at the time of his crucifixion was
made from stems of this plant. Interestingly, the stems of
this plant are pliable and can be intertwined into a circle.
There exists substantial evidence that the species, native
to Madagascar, had been brought to the Middle East before
the time of Christ.
Guide to the Sacrament of Reconciliation
Has it been a while since your last confession? Are you wondering how to prepare for this sacrament?
Read this guide from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops to learn what to expect and how to prepare.
1 PREPARATION: Before going to confession, take
some time to prepare by completing an “examination
of conscience”.
2 GREETING: The priest will welcome you; he may
say a short blessing or read a Scripture passage.
3 THE SIGN OF THE CROSS: Together, you and
the priest will make the Sign of the Cross. You may
then begin your confession with these or similar
words: “Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It has
been [give days, months, or years] since my last
confession.”
4 CONFESSION: Confess all your sins to the priest.
If you are unsure what to say, ask the priest for help.
When you are finished, conclude with these or
similar words: “I am sorry for these and all my sins.”
5 PENANCE: The priest will propose an act of
penance. The penance might be prayer, a work of
mercy, or an act of charity. He might also counsel
you on how to better live a Christian life.
6 ACT OF CONTRITION: After the priest has
conferred your penance, pray an Act of Contrition,
expressing sorrow for your sins and resolving to sin
no more.
7 ABSOLUTION: The priest will extend his hands
over your head and pronounce the words of
absolution. You respond, “Amen.”
8 PRAISE: The priest will usually praise the mercy
of God and will invite you to do the same. For
example, the priest may say, “Give thanks to the
Lord for he is good.” And your response would be,
“His mercy endures for ever.”
9 DISMISSAL: The priest will conclude the sacrament,
often saying, “Go in peace.”
If it has been a while since your last confession, remember,
“Do not fear” (Is 41:10). The priest will help guide you.
And feel free to take this guide with you!
An Examination of Conscience
• Have I kept the gift of faith in God?
• Do I trust in God?
• Have I prayed?
• Have I observed the Lord’s Day by worshipping at
Mass and resting from unnecessary work?
• Have I respected God’s holy name?
• Love your neighbor as yourself…
• How have I extended love and respect to my family,
my parents, my children, my nation?
• Have I respected life from conception to natural
death? Done no harm to anyone? What about anger
or resentments or endangering others or myself?
• Have I respected God’s gift of my sexuality?
Reserved that gift’s full expression to marriage and
been open to generating new life? What about my
respect for sexuality and reverence for this gift?
• Have I respected the goods of others? Not taken
anything nor damaged anything? Worked honestly
and justly compensated those who worked for me?
• Have I respected the truth by not lying and not
damaging the reputation of others?
• Have I been respectful of others and what they have
in my thoughts or have lust, envy, and jealousy held
a grip on me?
• Have I cared for those in need through outreach and
support? Have I contributed to the common good of
the society in which I live?
Act of Contrition—Traditional
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended you, and I
detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the
pains of hell, but most of all because they offend You, my God,
who are all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve,
with the help of Your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance
and to amend my life. Amen.
Act of Contrition—Contemporary
O my God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing
to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you
whom I should love above all things. I fully intend, with your
help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever
leads me to sin. Amen.

FROM THE LOTTERY COMMITTEE…
We, along with our entire STV School Family, would like to thank everyone in our Parish
community for their generous efforts in helping to make our annual Lottery Campaign a
success. Our after Mass sales, as well as our sales through the bulletin were the highest
they have ever been! It is with a true “attitude of gratitude” that we appreciate the
generous spirit of so many.
We would like to extend a special thank you to our very own Fr. Tom and Fr. Wojciech for
their heartfelt efforts (and clergy competitiveness!) which resulted in a combined selling
total of 279 tickets! You will have to ask one of them who came out as “top salesman”….
Our new Lottery year began on March 15, with our school
children drawing the 6 winning tickets. Check out the pictures
to see who made a special appearance for the drawing…….
then check out the name of our very first winner!
(Hmmm….coincidence, luck or Divine Intervention?)
All future drawings will take place on the 15 th of each month, with the winning names posted
in the bulletin. If you have not yet bought a ticket, but are eager to see your name on that
winning list, it is not too late! Tickets can still be purchased at the Parish Office, as well as
through the school. There are still 11 more months throughout the Lottery year to be a
winner! Good Luck to all ticket holders, and once again we thank you for your support!
On Statuary Stigmata & the Centurion
Copyright 2013 by John B. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com)
Unlike a lot of churches I’ve visited, my home parish church,
St. Constance on Chicago’s northwest side, does not present a large
depiction of the crucified Christ. The corpus is always present at
Mass on the hand held cross which the altar servers carry out from
the sacristy, but the large relief statuary on the front wall of the
church above the altar depicts the risen Christ in flowing robes with
his hands upwardly extended. At least since we joined the parish in
the mid-1980’s, that’s the way it’s always been.
Which is not to say there haven’t been a few changes along the way.
Most notably some years back, an artist was commissioned to add
legs and feet to the image (in the original work, only Christ’s upper
torso was visible beneath the robe). It took me a while to warm to the
new look. I did with time, though. In fact, I often focus on the risen
Christ after receiving Communion, so I’m surprised I didn’t see the
latest change in the image until my wife pointed it out to me after
10:30 Mass just this past weekend. The statuary now has stigmata…
Gail said she actually noticed the nail marks in the relief statue’s
hands and the lance wound in its side a few weeks prior but didn’t
mention it to me, so I briefly stared at them wondering how I could
have missed them. Then I asked a few friends still in church if they
knew anything about the new look. Turns out everyone knew about
it, and everyone told me it was recent, but nobody could tell me
exactly when the change went down. One friend showed me a
picture he’d snapped of the statuary at Christmas, though, just to
confirm that the marks weren’t there then.
Regardless of the timing, I like this new look, too, and right now I’m
focused on the nail marks because of something in today’s Gospel,
our Lord’s Passion according to Luke. Upon Christ’s death in
Matthew’s version of the Passion, the centurion stationed nearby to
watch over Jesus says, “Truly, this was the Son of God!” Similarly
upon Christ’s death in Mark’s version, the centurion says, “Truly, this
man was the Son of God!” But upon Christ’s death in Luke’s version,
the centurion observes, “Surely, this was an innocent man!”
Here, Luke focuses not only on Christ’s undeniable innocence, but
also on his undeniable human-ness, which makes the nails and the
spear even more horrific to consider. Yes, Jesus is Lord and savior.
He walks on water, gives sight to the blind, raises the dead. On the
tree, though, he is you and me. He anguishes the same as you and
me. He bleeds the same as you and me. He cries out the same as
you and me. A few weeks ago on the mountain with Peter, John, and
James, we saw Christ in all his Godly glory. Today, we see an
innocent man crucified, and his nails bring us to tears. The new
statuary stigmata--whenever those nail marks arrived--helps me to
appreciate this more, which leads me in turn to ponder more deeply
Christ’s sacrifice on our behalf. Lord, I still don’t truly understand it,
but I am grateful for it beyond words.
