Dear Parish Family of St. Thomas,
Second Homily
October is designated as “Bullying Prevention Awareness Month!” Each year millions of
children experience the humiliation of bullying. It creates that climate of fear, callousness
and disrespect for everyone involved. We need to always “Respect Life” in all ways—
especially during Respect Life month.
This week we celebrate Halloween, All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day! They are all times which help us understand
the meaning of life. Halloween got its name from “All Hollow's Eve” or the vigil of All Saints’ Day. It
should be a fun day for children—big and little, young and old.
Did you know that being a saint is like being a Halloween pumpkin? Why? God picks you from the field,
brings you in and washes all the dirt off you. Then, He cuts off the top and scoops out the yucky stuff inside.
He removes the pulp of impurity and injustice and the seeds of doubt, hatred and greed. Then, He carves
you a new smiling face and puts this light of holiness inside you for the entire world to see. This is the
Catholic idea behind the carved pumpkin. See page 11 for your Pumpkin Carving Prayer.
All Saints’ Day on November 1 is the universal Christian feast honoring all Christian saints—countless
unknown and un-canonized saints. It is a day in which we thank God for giving ordinary men and women a
share in His holiness and the heavenly glory as a reward for their faithfulness. While it is a holy day of
obligation, this day calls us to Mass to honor the saints by seeking their intercession. Just last weekend, we
heard the news that our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, formally declared seven new saints. Two of the
new saints were actually from the state of New York. Katerie Tekakwitha is the first Native American saint.
The other new American saint is Mother Marianne Cope—a Franciscan Sister from Syracuse, New York.
She devoted her life to those suffering from leprosy on the island in Molokai, Hawaii.
All Souls’ Day is the traditional day set apart in our Church that we may remember and pray for all of our
relatives and friends who have gone to their eternal reward. It is another opportunity for us to concretize our
faith and belief in the Risen Lord. We have the tradition at St. Thomas of Villanova on All Souls’ Day to
celebrate a special Mass of Remembrance. This Mass will be on this Friday at 7:00 p.m. We will recognize
all who have been buried from St. Thomas of Villanova since All Souls’ Day last year as we read aloud their
names and pray for all of our departed relatives and friends. All Souls’ Day envelopes are available in your
monthly packets and at the exits of church for you to write the names of your departed loved ones who will be
remembered at all of the Masses throughout November. You can also inscribe the names in our Book of the
Deceased which is in the Baptistry Area. Let us not forget to pray for our dear departed relatives and friends,
have Masses offered for them, visit their graves and make daily sacrifices in their honor.
Did you return your Offertory intention card? It’s not too late to do so! Pray about it! Sign it! Return it!
RESPECT LIFE
MONTH
On March 11, 1984, Cardinal Bernardin delivered a
moving speech at St. Louis University. A particular
portion of his lecture series became known as the
“Seamless Garment: A Consistent Ethic of Life”.
His message emphasized the importance of why
we need to espouse a consistent ethic of life: (1)
the dimensions of the threats to life today; and (2)
the value of our moral vision.
Quoting Pope John Paul II, “it is only through a
conscious choice and through a deliberate policy
that humanity can be saved.” Cardinal Bernardin
continued, “The idea of a consistent ethic of life –
one which stands for the protection of the right to
life and the promotion of the rights which enhance
life from womb to tomb – manifests the positive
potential of the Catholic moral and social tradition.
It is both a complex and a demanding tradition; it
joins the humanity of the unborn infant and the
humanity of the hungry; it calls for positive legal
action to prevent the killing of the unborn or the
aged and positive societal action to provide shelter
for the homeless and education for the illiterate.
The potential of the moral and social vision is
appreciated in a new way when the systemic vision
of Catholic ethics is seen as the background for the
specific positions we take on a range of issues. A
consistent ethic does not say everyone in the
Church must do all things, but it is both possible
and necessary for the Church as a whole to
cultivate a conscious explicit connection among the
several issues.”
Let us pray to our God of all creation, through
Jesus, your Son, You created man in your own
image and likeness, to live and love as the crown
of your creation. Move our hearts to cherish the
precious gift of life at every stage and in every
condition, and especially when it is most vulnerable
in the autumn of life.
AMEN

As a “Cradle Catholic,” I have become more and
more familiar with the word “Stewardship” over the
years. Stewardship is defined as the careful and
responsible management of something entrusted to
one’s care. God calls us to be stewards and entrusts
us with our families, our homes, our church and many
other things.
We are asked to use our gifts to be disciples; to be
the hands and feet of our Lord. Stewardship to me is
placing my time, talent, and treasure in places where I
can be most effective in supporting my Church,
Community and God. I have given my time to several
ministries over the years such as Christ Renews His
Parish, the Parish Pastoral Council, Religious
Education, and the STV50 Committee. I have used
my professional and God given talents to support
these and other ministries, and have never had any
regrets. I am also asked to share my treasure, for
without, much of our work as a community would not
be possible. For some, the sharing of treasure may
be the most difficult part of stewardship to discern.
However, it’s something very much needed if, as a
community, we are to support and maintain our
spiritual home.
I Corinthians 12:4-13, God gives all of us spiritual gifts
to use in God’s service.
Colleen and I, along with our two children, have made
St. Thomas our spiritual home for about the last 15
years. We enjoy being a part of the ministries at St.
Thomas, as it is a place where we can give as well as
receive. It is the place we come weekly to get
centered as a family, to be nurtured, fed, and
renewed in the likeness of Christ. This is the
community that makes up a large percentage of our
friends, as we all have one common thread – Faith
and love for the Lord. This is our Church to take care
of for years to come, and this is why we choose to
give our time, talent, and treasure to St. Thomas.
Luke 12:48, Much is required from the person to
whom much is given!
I believe the good Lord put us on this earth to serve
others in all ways possible, through giving of our time,
talent, and treasure. Some of us have little time, and
more money. Others have more time, but less
money. And we all have talent! Whatever the
situation, treasure is just part of the overall equation,
and each of us is asked to prayerfully consider what
balance is right for our family.
Colleen & Steve Lundell—Parishioners
30 th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“Immediately he received his sight and followed him on the
way.” (MARK 10:52)
Sight is just one of the many gifts that God has given to us.
Like all of our basic senses and talents, sight is a gift we often
take for granted. We pat ourselves on the back for our
accomplishments, forgetting that whatever we do, we do with
the gifts that God has given to us.
Stewardship begins with prayer. God’s call to be wise
stewards with our time, talent and treasure varies
depending on our life situations. Over the years, our
family has chosen to support such things as God’s
Great Room, the STV50 Renovation project, STV
School, weekly contributions, and other less visible
but important causes. When I was out of work for a
year and a half, our financial contributions were down
significantly, but never completely stopped. My
contribution of time and talent increased as I
volunteered on the STV50 committee and a Christ
Renews His Parish team. Since finding a job, Colleen
and I have been doing what we can to pay it forward
in thanksgiving to all those who supported us during a
difficult time. We also continue to participate in
several ministries.
YEAR OF FAITH: OCTOBER 2012
What Is the Year of Faith?
Meditation: Since beginning his ministry as Peter's successor, Pope Benedict XVI has often
spoken of the need to rediscover the journey of faith in order to rekindle the joy and renew the
enthusiasm that encountering Christ brings to life (see Benedict XVI, Door of Faith, 2).
October 11 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of Vatican II and the twentieth
anniversary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. From that day through the solemnity of
Christ the King in November 2013, Pope Benedict invites us to celebrate a "Year of Faith." This
Year challenges us, disciples baptized into Christ and his Church, to move beyond routine to relationship; to "re-image"
our Catholic faith not as an intellectual exercise, but as a personal encounter with Christ, an encounter that blossoms
into a living friendship with Jesus and a loving relationship with our neighbor. Important as official teachings are--and this
year we should rediscover these, too--the pope suggests that we begin this Year by looking at faith as a lifelong journey
undertaken with a joy that inevitably attracts others. As examples of a personal faith whose authenticity and enthusiasm
have an impact on others, Pope Benedict canonized two saints with American significance on World Mission Sunday,
October 21: Native American Kateri Tekakwitha (1656-1680), whose short life was a journey of selfless love; and Mother
Marianne Cope (1838-1918), whose love for Christ led her from Germany to Hawaii, where she shared Father Damien's
ministry to those afflicted with Hansen's disease.
Mission: Move the Creed that I profess each Sunday from my head to my heart, rekindling my enthusiasm for serving
Christ in my neighbor each day.
Dear Jesus,
As I carve my pumpkin, help me pray this prayer:
Open my mind so I can learn about You—
(Cut off the top of the pumpkin)
Take all my sin and forgive the wrong that I do—
(Clean out the inside)
Open my eyes so Your love I will see—
(Cut eyes shaped like hearts)
I’m sorry for times I’ve turned up my nose at
what You have given to me—
(Cut a nose in the shape of the cross)
Open my ears so Your Word I will hear—
(Cut ears shaped like the Bible)
Open my mouth to tell others You are near—
Let Your Light shine in all I say and do—
ROSE FOR LIFE
For a Special Intention
On Lake Geneva, Loving Funky’s and Seeing
Savoring a day off recently in conjunction with my wife’s mid-week day
off, I took a drive with Gail this past Wednesday up to Lake Geneva, WI.
Actually, we went to use a dinner coupon we received last year. From
what we could see of the place during our first visit last November,
Sopra is a very nice restaurant. We tried to use the coupon back then on
our 30th anniversary. When we arrived, though--half an hour before
closing--we learned that the chef had left early. It was his birthday,
apparently. Who knew? Well, we said right then and there that we’d
return next year, and we did. What we didn’t know is that Sopra is
closed on Wednesdays… No worries. The coupon doesn’t carry an
expiration date, so as long as the place stays in business, we have a
couple of meals waiting for us.
Besides, the weather that day was decent so we enjoyed a boat cruise
around the lake as the captain--or whatever the guy at the controls calls
himself--pointed out the history of some of the incredible homes up
there. Counting the ill-fated dinner trip last November, we’ve now been
to Lake Geneva only twice, but I’ve long been told that it’s a haven for
monied Chicagoans, and their mansions told the story. We own an old
Chicago bungalow, and our whole house could fit easily into some of
these places. But hey! Who needs the heating bills?
We also hit a few shops up there, and one of my favorites was a place
called “I Love Funky’s.” A kid I knew in high school used to say, “You tell
me what it is, and I’ll tell you how to get rid of it.” I thought about Carl
that day. Funky’s had lots of weird stuff, and all of it was for sale. In
truth, I loved the antique furniture set for $28,000, but it was a bit out of
my price range. Still, I left the shop that day with something of high value
in its own right. It was a message stenciled (in funky lettering, of course)
up high on one of the walls: “Above all watch with glittering eyes the
world around you, because the greatest secrets are always hidden in
the most unlikely places!”
As Jesus leaves Jericho in today’s Gospel, a blind man sits begging on
the side of the road. Upon hearing that Christ is walking by, Bartimaeus
calls out, “Jesus, son of David, have pity on me.” According to the
passage, many tried to silence him, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the
most vocal of these were Christ’s own disciples. Regardless, Bartimaeus
calls out all the more to Jesus, asking this itinerant preacher--this
nobody, really--for help. Jesus stops, and when Bartimaeus comes to
him, Christ asks the blind man what he wants. “Master,” he responds, “I
want to see.” We all know what comes next. Even in his blindness,
Bartimaeus could see what many could not see, and when Christ returns
sight to the man, Bartimaeus “followed him on the way.” Above all watch
with glittering eyes the world
around you, because the
greatest secrets are always
hidden in the most unlikely
places! Jesus is at work in our
world, if we could just take
notice. Like Bartimaeus,
“Master, I want to see.”
