On Lake Geneva, Loving Funky’s and Seeing Savoring a day off recently in conjunction with my wife’s mid-week day off, I took a drive with Gail this past Wednesday up to Lake Geneva, WI. Actually, we went to use a dinner coupon we received last year. From what we could see of the place during our first visit last November, Sopra is a very nice restaurant. We tried to use the coupon back then on our 30th anniversary. When we arrived, though--half an hour before closing--we learned that the chef had left early. It was his birthday, apparently. Who knew? Well, we said right then and there that we’d return next year, and we did. What we didn’t know is that Sopra is closed on Wednesdays… No worries. The coupon doesn’t carry an expiration date, so as long as the place stays in business, we have a couple of meals waiting for us. Besides, the weather that day was decent so we enjoyed a boat cruise around the lake as the captain--or whatever the guy at the controls calls himself--pointed out the history of some of the incredible homes up there. Counting the ill-fated dinner trip last November, we’ve now been to Lake Geneva only twice, but I’ve long been told that it’s a haven for monied Chicagoans, and their mansions told the story. We own an old Chicago bungalow, and our whole house could fit easily into some of these places. But hey! Who needs the heating bills? We also hit a few shops up there, and one of my favorites was a place called “I Love Funky’s.” A kid I knew in high school used to say, “You tell me what it is, and I’ll tell you how to get rid of it.” I thought about Carl that day. Funky’s had lots of weird stuff, and all of it was for sale. In truth, I loved the antique furniture set for $28,000, but it was a bit out of my price range. Still, I left the shop that day with something of high value in its own right. It was a message stenciled (in funky lettering, of course) up high on one of the walls: “Above all watch with glittering eyes the world around you, because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places!” As Jesus leaves Jericho in today’s Gospel, a blind man sits begging on the side of the road. Upon hearing that Christ is walking by, Bartimaeus calls out, “Jesus, son of David, have pity on me.” According to the passage, many tried to silence him, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the most vocal of these were Christ’s own disciples. Regardless, Bartimaeus calls out all the more to Jesus, asking this itinerant preacher--this nobody, really--for help. Jesus stops, and when Bartimaeus comes to him, Christ asks the blind man what he wants. “Master,” he responds, “I want to see.” We all know what comes next. Even in his blindness, Bartimaeus could see what many could not see, and when Christ returns sight to the man, Bartimaeus “followed him on the way.” Above all watch with glittering eyes the world around you, because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places! Jesus is at work in our world, if we could just take notice. Like Bartimaeus, “Master, I want to see.” Copyright 2012 by John B.
