Baptism is celebrated every Sunday following the 11:15am Mass. Call the Parish Office for information. MARRIAGE Arrangements for the celebration of marriage should be made at least six (6) months prior to your planned wedding date. COMMUNION FOR HOMEBOUND Ministers of Care are available to bring Communion to the homebound. Contact the Parish Office for more information. Dear Parish Family of St. Thomas, Second Homily October is designated as “Bullying Prevention Awareness Month!” Each year millions of children experience the humiliation of bullying. It creates that climate of fear, callousness and disrespect for everyone involved. We need to always “Respect Life” in all ways— especially during Respect Life month. This week we celebrate Halloween, All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day! They are all times which help us understand the meaning of life. Halloween got its name from “All Hollow's Eve” or the vigil of All Saints’ Day. It should be a fun day for children—big and little, young and old. Did you know that being a saint is like being a Halloween pumpkin? Why? God picks you from the field, brings you in and washes all the dirt off you. Then, He cuts off the top and scoops out the yucky stuff inside. He removes the pulp of impurity and injustice and the seeds of doubt, hatred and greed. Then, He carves you a new smiling face and puts this light of holiness inside you for the entire world to see. This is the Catholic idea behind the carved pumpkin. See page 11 for your Pumpkin Carving Prayer. All Saints’ Day on November 1 is the universal Christian feast honoring all Christian saints—countless unknown and un-canonized saints. It is a day in which we thank God for giving ordinary men and women a share in His holiness and the heavenly glory as a reward for their faithfulness. While it is a holy day of obligation, this day calls us to Mass to honor the saints by seeking their intercession. Just last weekend, we heard the news that our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, formally declared seven new saints. Two of the new saints were actually from the state of New York. Katerie Tekakwitha is the first Native American saint. The other new American saint is Mother Marianne Cope—a Franciscan Sister from Syracuse, New York. She devoted her life to those suffering from leprosy on the island in Molokai, Hawaii. All Souls’ Day is the traditional day set apart in our Church that we may remember and pray for all of our relatives and friends who have gone to their eternal reward. It is another opportunity for us to concretize our faith and belief in the Risen Lord. We have the tradition at St. Thomas of Villanova on All Souls’ Day to celebrate a special Mass of Remembrance. This Mass will be on this Friday at 7:00 p.m. We will recognize all who have been buried from St. Thomas of Villanova since All Souls’ Day last year as we read aloud their names and pray for all of our departed relatives and friends. All Souls’ Day envelopes are available in your monthly packets and at the exits of church for you to write the names of your departed loved ones who will be remembered at all of the Masses throughout November. You can also inscribe the names in our Book of the Deceased which is in the Baptistry Area. Let us not forget to pray for our dear departed relatives and friends, have Masses offered for them, visit their graves and make daily sacrifices in their honor.
