This program is designed to provide students with a gre<strong>at</strong>er awareness of the exiting, challenging, and rewarding career opportunities<br />
th<strong>at</strong> exists with a degree in agricultural and environmental sciences or family and consumer sciences. Participants spend the three<br />
weeks being orient<strong>at</strong>ed to the career p<strong>at</strong>hs offered by each of the seven instructional programs in the college. This program’s<br />
objectives are to initi<strong>at</strong>e gre<strong>at</strong> career opportunities for the students and increase the number of students declaring an interest in the<br />
College of Agricultural, Family and Consumer Sciences.<br />
Students completing the 11 th grade spring <strong>2012</strong>-minimum GPA 2.5; Spring <strong>2012</strong> gradu<strong>at</strong>ing seniors-ACT (SAT<br />
equivalent) composite score of 20 and above, or High School GPA of 2.5 or gre<strong>at</strong>er, or rank in the top 50% of high school<br />
gradu<strong>at</strong>ing class AND require no more than ONE remedial course; currently enrolled students must be in good standing<br />
with the university and have a minimum GPA of 2.5. All-applicants must be interested in agricultural sciences, consumer<br />
sciences, business or science.<br />

This program is designed to provide students and their parents learning experiences th<strong>at</strong> will enhance their<br />
knowledge, awareness and <strong>at</strong>titudes regarding the benefits of healthy cooking, e<strong>at</strong>ing and physical activity. The<br />
camp includes Monday-Friday daily sessions for students and weekly sessions for parents. The camp consists<br />
of classes th<strong>at</strong> focus on basic food prepar<strong>at</strong>ion techniques, nutrition educ<strong>at</strong>ion and factors th<strong>at</strong> influence e<strong>at</strong>ing<br />
behavior; a variety of physical activities; cooking demonstr<strong>at</strong>ions by local chefs; and field trips. The program’s<br />
objective is to evalu<strong>at</strong>e the impact of the summer camp on promoting healthy e<strong>at</strong>ing and physical activity<br />
lifestyles among families; thus, reducing childhood obesity in the <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>University</strong> community.<br />
Students completing the 4 th -8 th grades spring <strong>2012</strong>. One parent or guardian of the student <strong>at</strong>tending the camp<br />
must <strong>at</strong>tend the weekly Parents’ Night, one-hour class. LIMITED SPACE AVAILABLE.<br />

School of Architecture <strong>Summer</strong> Enrichment Institute (SASEI) seeks to engage high school students (who<br />
aspire to become architects) in four weeks of exciting and challenging activities th<strong>at</strong> introduce the<br />
participants to the profession of architecture. Participants explore a variety of cre<strong>at</strong>ive activities th<strong>at</strong><br />
allow them to begin “Thinking Beyond Their Experience.”<br />
Students promoted to grades 9 through 12 with a cumul<strong>at</strong>ive grade point average of <strong>at</strong> least<br />
a 2.5 on a 4.0 scale are eligible. They must submit a registr<strong>at</strong>ion form and on a separ<strong>at</strong>e sheet of paper<br />
type an essay in which they tell why they are interested in the study of architecture, briefly describe their<br />
extracurricular activities/interest, and tell us how they will contribute to society and mankind through<br />

Developing Educ<strong>at</strong>ional Skills for Kids (D.E.S.K) Academy is offering an 8 week program th<strong>at</strong> enhances<br />
cognitive, social, character, and physical skills in developing the total child. The curriculum includes the use of<br />
critical thinking skills with m<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics, reading (ELA), and science in a hands-on, interactive, cooper<strong>at</strong>ive<br />
learning environment focusing on the cognitive skills. Curriculum will be infused with Social Studies. As a<br />
bonus, we will offer a conflict resolution component which will help the children to effectively work through<br />
day-to-day situ<strong>at</strong>ions.<br />
Pre-evalu<strong>at</strong>ions will be done to assess each child’s starting level and post-evalu<strong>at</strong>ions will be done to show<br />
improvements. This program addresses remedi<strong>at</strong>ion and enrichment skills. The expected outcome is to ensure<br />
readiness for the current school year including leap preparedness for those 3 rd and 4 th grade students. The<br />
program is enhanced with the inclusion of both a highly qualified and certified teaching staff and administr<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
th<strong>at</strong> includes college professors with years of experience. We will be working in conjunction with <strong>Southern</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong>’s Master of Public Administr<strong>at</strong>ion Associ<strong>at</strong>ion (SUMPAA) and other <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />
Associ<strong>at</strong>ions and/or departments.<br />
Participants must be entering K – 5 th grade in the fall. Remedi<strong>at</strong>ion, on level, and above level students are all<br />
welcome to particip<strong>at</strong>e in the program. A copy of final grades and standardized test (if given), are required to<br />
be submitted with registr<strong>at</strong>ion packets. All students must have a recent physical from their doctor clearing them<br />
to engage in sports and other types of physical activities. Parents must also include any and all allergies as it<br />
rel<strong>at</strong>es to food, or anything else.

The ExxonMobil Bernard Harris <strong>Summer</strong> Science Camp (EMBHSSC) is organized to provide activities, experiments,<br />
projects, and field experiences for students entering 6 th , 7 th , or 8 th grade in the fall of <strong>2012</strong>. The camp promotes science,<br />
technology, engineering and m<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics (STEM) educ<strong>at</strong>ion and supports historically underserved and underrepresented<br />
students with limited opportunities. EMBHSSC is a two-week, academic, residential camp th<strong>at</strong> emphasizes increasing<br />
students’ m<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics and science knowledge and skills while introducing them to college life and stimul<strong>at</strong>ing their<br />
interest in science and engineering as a potential career p<strong>at</strong>h. The camp will be held on the campus of <strong>Southern</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong> B<strong>at</strong>on <strong>Rouge</strong>, Louisiana 70813. Students will be housed in a dorm on the university’s campus. Camp<br />
participants will be selected from the Gre<strong>at</strong>er B<strong>at</strong>on <strong>Rouge</strong> area and surrounding parishes. Students <strong>at</strong>tending school<br />

to 4 th -8 th grade students. The <strong>Summer</strong> Institute explores academic and practical issues rel<strong>at</strong>ed to business and transport<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />
The students will particip<strong>at</strong>e in many economics sessions in the College of Business. M<strong>at</strong>h skills and practice sessions<br />
involving test taking (Leap-Iowa) will be an intric<strong>at</strong>e part of the summer programs.<br />
Students will explore FUNdamental field trips every Friday and particip<strong>at</strong>e in many fun physical activities. The program will<br />

The Sankofa Academy is an academic empowerment program designed to enhance students’ critical thinking skills,<br />
m<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics skills, English skills, and reading comprehension skills. The courses prepare students for future high school<br />
or college studies.<br />
The enrollment for the Sankofa Academy’s commuter program <strong>at</strong> SUBR is one hundred (100) students.<br />
Participants must be entering the 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grade. Judgment and character are among the criteria for<br />
particip<strong>at</strong>ing. Each student must have an acceptable school disciplinary record and must <strong>at</strong>tach a recent ACT, PSAT, or<br />
SAT score to the applic<strong>at</strong>ion. If students do not take the ACT assessment by April 14, <strong>2012</strong>, they will still have time to<br />
take the June 9, <strong>2012</strong>, ACT assessment.<br />
The non-refundable enrollment fee is $700. This fee does not include meals or snacks. Students are expected to bring a<br />
bag lunch or to go to the <strong>University</strong> cafeteria. The cost for lunch in the cafeteria is $6.50 per day. We do not offer<br />
scholarships; we do not offer a reduction in the enrollment fee for multiple siblings. We do not adjust the enrollment fee<br />
for absences. We do not give refunds if the student is dismissed for reasons such as inappropri<strong>at</strong>e behavior, poor health,<br />
sickness, vac<strong>at</strong>ion, etc.<br />

Skills Enhancement Academy (SEA) is an eight week non-residential program th<strong>at</strong> focuses on Reading, English<br />
Language Arts and M<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics for students in Grades K-5. S.E.A. offers basic educ<strong>at</strong>ional enrichment ensuring<br />
a readiness to return to the classroom. The enrollment for SEA, per summer is 100 students.<br />
Participants must be entering K – 5 th grade in the fall. Students selected to particip<strong>at</strong>e must have <strong>at</strong> been<br />
successfully promoted to their next grade level and must demonstr<strong>at</strong>e exemplary behavior.<br />

Eight Weeks (This program follows the <strong>University</strong> calendar.)<br />

SBI is an early college enrollment and research program aimed <strong>at</strong> recruiting top high school gradu<strong>at</strong>es <strong>at</strong> <strong>Southern</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong> and A&M College. Priority is given to those majoring in one of the science, technology, engineering,<br />
and m<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics (STEM) disciplines (i.e., physics, chemistry, biology, m<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics, computer science, or<br />
architecture). A minimum of 7-8 hours of college course hours, depending on research schedule, is required.<br />
Particip<strong>at</strong>ion in a weekly research and enhancement seminar is required. The internaliz<strong>at</strong>ion of the locus of<br />
control is one of the aims of SBI. Study hall for three (3) hours per day, Monday to Friday, is also mand<strong>at</strong>ory.<br />
SBI is funded in part by the Department of Navy, Office of Naval Research (ONR), and others. The enrollment<br />
for SBI, per summer, is typically 20 scholars.<br />
Successful applicants must earn the high school diploma by June <strong>2012</strong>, have a minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0, and a<br />
minimum ACT score of 21. Participants must major in a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and<br />
m<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics) discipline.<br />
Tuition and fees, and books will be paid by the Timbuktu Academy and the Louis Stokes Louisiana Alliance for<br />
Minority Particip<strong>at</strong>ion (LS-LAMP) funding agencies. For the summer of <strong>2012</strong>, SBI is a non-residential program.<br />

The <strong>Summer</strong> Transport<strong>at</strong>ion and Energy Institute is a unique concept th<strong>at</strong> is designed to cre<strong>at</strong>e an awareness of opportunities which<br />
exist in the transport<strong>at</strong>ion and energy industry and to stimul<strong>at</strong>e an interest in secondary elementary school students in Science,<br />
Technology, Engineering, and M<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics (STEM). The institute consists of two programs: academic and enhancement. The<br />
academic program introduces participants to science issues, global conserv<strong>at</strong>ion and land, air and w<strong>at</strong>er transport<strong>at</strong>ion. The<br />
curriculum includes problem-based learning projects, use of critical thinking skills, and hands-on projects. The enhancement program<br />
covers time management, study habits, test-taking skills, oral and written communic<strong>at</strong>ion skills, and computer skills. Weekly fieldtrips<br />
are taken to enforce wh<strong>at</strong> is learned in the classroom. The participants will be engaged in a four-week intensive m<strong>at</strong>h, science,<br />
technical writing, and transport<strong>at</strong>ion and robotics program.<br />

PROGRAM NAME: THE CLASSIC UPWARD BOUND PROGRAM<br />

Description: Classic Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their prepar<strong>at</strong>ion for college entrance. The<br />
program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultim<strong>at</strong>ely in their higher educ<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
pursuits. Classic Upward Bound serves: high school students from low-income families; high school students from families in which<br />
neither parent holds a bachelor's degree; and low-income, first-gener<strong>at</strong>ion military veterans who are preparing to enter postsecondary<br />
educ<strong>at</strong>ion. The goal of Classic Upward Bound is to increase the r<strong>at</strong>e <strong>at</strong> which participants complete secondary educ<strong>at</strong>ion and enroll in<br />
and gradu<strong>at</strong>e from institutions of postsecondary educ<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />
Classic Upward Bound projects provide academic instruction in m<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics, labor<strong>at</strong>ory sciences, composition, liter<strong>at</strong>ure, and foreign<br />
languages. Tutoring, counseling, mentoring, cultural enrichment activities are also provided.<br />

Description: The Upward Bound M<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics and Science Program is designed to strengthen the m<strong>at</strong>h and science skills of<br />
particip<strong>at</strong>ing students. The goal of the program is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in the STEM<br />
disciplines and to encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in rel<strong>at</strong>ed areas.<br />
Program services include: a summer program with intensive m<strong>at</strong>h and science training; year-round counseling and advisement;<br />
exposure to university faculty members who do research in m<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics and the sciences; computer training; and participantconducted<br />
scientific research under the guidance of faculty members or gradu<strong>at</strong>e students, who are serving as mentors.<br />
