ENGLISH LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION<br />

ELI 7001 English Language ‐ Composition I Students will work with<br />

simple and complex sentences, guided paragraphs and will be introduced<br />

to essay writing with topic sentences and supporting details<br />

of evidence and examples. An introduction to expository writing and<br />

a targeted composing process is examined. Academic vocabulary is<br />

introduced. Prewriting skills including brainstorming and developing<br />

supporting details are explored. This course is intended for students<br />

with a greater level of proficiency in a language other than English.<br />

Course requirements: TOEFL, Accuplacer, and/or interview.<br />

ELI 7002 English Language ‐ Reading I Students will build reading<br />

strategies to include scanning, skimming, and clustering techniques.<br />

Skills in identifying topics, main ideas, supporting ideas, and making<br />

basic inferences will be developed. Coursework will include building<br />

passive and active vocabulary from context, introduction of world<br />

families, distinguishing fact and opinion, understanding vocabulary<br />

from context clues, decoding skills, and recognizing transitions. This<br />

course is intended for students with a greater level of proficiency in<br />

a language other than English. Course requirements: TOEFL, Accuplacer,<br />

and/or interview.<br />

ELI 7003 English Language ‐ Speak and Listen Students will improve<br />

vocabulary building, pronunciation, and intonation. Based on student<br />

level, development of accuracy and fluency in listening and<br />

speaking skills including correct word order in spoken English and<br />

life skills vocabulary will be addressed. Students will also gain assistance<br />

in building aural and oral communication skills and will focus<br />

on note taking and dictation. Academic vocabulary and an introduction<br />

to simple gerunds and infinitives will be targeted. There is a lab<br />

requirement of two hours each week outside of class time which will<br />

be arranged individually. This course is intended for students with a<br />

greater level of proficiency in a language other than English. Course<br />

requirements: TOEFL, Accuplacer, and/or interview.<br />

ELI 7004 English Language ‐ Reading II This course continues to build<br />

the students’ reading strategies of scanning, skimming, and clustering<br />

techniques. Identifying topics, main ideas, supporting ideas and<br />

making basic inferences are introduces and expanded on. Coursework<br />

will include building passive and active vocabulary from context,<br />

introduction of work families, distinguishing fact and opinion,<br />

understanding vocabulary from context clues, decoding skills, and<br />

recognizing transitions.<br />

ELI 7007 English Language ‐ Composition II Students will work with<br />

simple and complex sentences, guided paragraphs and will work on<br />

essay writing with topic sentences and supporting details of evidence<br />

and examples. Expository writing and a targeted composing<br />

process is examined. Academic vocabulary is developed. Prewriting<br />

skills including brainstorming and developing supporting details are<br />

explored.<br />

ENG 7002 Reading Refresher I Students will learn reading and study<br />

skills in this five week refresher course. At its conclusion, students<br />

may be better prepared for college level reading requirements. At<br />

the completion, students will be re‐tested using Accuplacer to determine<br />

their reading qualifications.<br />

ENG 7003 Reading Refresher II Students will learn in this ten week<br />

course a continuation of versatile reading and study skills started in<br />

coursework from Reading Refresher I.<br />
