HIS 8504 Introduction to US Women’s History Students will explore the American past from the Colonial era to the present, focusing on the social and cultural diversity of the American experience through an analysis of the lives of American women. Students will explore concepts of power, gender, social class, cultural identity, and race/ ethnicity as they emerge, are perceived, contested, and change over time and space. INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION INE 2730 Semester Abroad The student should consult with the study abroad coordinator to determine the appropriate course number(s) to register for because credit hours vary. Offers programs in many countries including Australia, Ecuador, England, Ireland, and Spain. Programs consist of courses taken at a college or university in the host country. Credit hours earned vary by program and session. Students can choose courses in the humanities, social sciences, business and internships for service professions. Classes are conducted in English and other languages. Students may take a conventional semester abroad, studying at a university, or they may also engage in service learning 20 hours per week, while attending a university abroad. Financial aid for which a student is eligible applies to these programs as well. Application deadline for the summer session is March 1; for the fall semester it is April 1; and for the spring semester it is November 1; with some exceptions for certain programs. INT 7011 Topical Studies: Modern Media This class is a thematic offering on a topic of the Developmental Studies program's choice. The topics should be of interest to the developmental studies student and pair with their reading, composition, and other classes. Topics may vary but could include issues like current events, American culture, and sports and mass media. When possible, it will tie in with other JCC events and aid in an overall enriching experience intended to improve student’s ability to discuss, interpret and explain a variety of issues. INT 7014 Current Events & the Media Students will explore the way current issues and events are presented by the media. When possible, it will tie in with other JCC events and aid in an overall enriching experience intended to improve student ability to discuss, interpret, and explain a variety of issues. By bringing in current issues, students will gain an understanding of and appreciation for the variety of ways information is present in mainstream American culture. Students will study a variety of topics through different informational mediums, including periodicals, broadcast and print news, and other informational outlets. Prerequisite: Reading score 80+. PHE 7014 Mixed Martial Arts I Students will demonstrate the use of both striking and grappling techniques, both standing and on the ground as skills required in the full contact combat sport of mixed martial arts (MMA). The course will combine the knowledge and skills learned in traditional karate and/or co‐ed self defense to advance the students into the realm of stand‐up and ground fighting. Prerequisite: PHE 1630 or PHE 1770 or permission of instructor. PHE 7015 Aqua Zumba Students will learn that Aqua Zumba is a Latininspired, dance‐fitness class that incorporates Latin and International music and dance movements, which create a dynamic, exciting, and effective workout in the pool. This class format combines fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body in an aerobic/fitness fashion to achieve a unique blended balance of cardio and muscletoning benefits. Aqua Zumba integrates some of the basic principles of aerobic and resistance training to maximize caloric output, cardiovascular benefits, and total body toning. This course enables the student to become physically fit while minimizing the risk of injury to joints of the body. Prerequisite: Eligibility ENG 0410. PHE 7548 Sport in Society Students will learn about the relationships between sports, culture, and society through the use of concepts, theories, and research. Topics to be presented may include, but will not be limited to, such issues as violence in sport, gender and sport, race and sport, sport and the media, and sport and politics.
