Single Honours Degree Programmes in Biosciences
Biology
The aim of the degree course is to produce biologists, who do not wish to specialize in a single
biological discipline, with a knowledge of basic principles and unifying concepts in biology. The
objectives are to produce graduates who understand the structural, functional and phylogenetic
relationships of living organisms and who appreciate the importance of IT and numeracy skills.

Marine Biology
The aim of the course is to provide an understanding of marine organisms and their interactions
with the environment. The objectives are that by the end of the course students should be
familiar with: the biology and interrelationships of marine organisms from microbes to mammals;
field surveying and sampling techniques; planning and executing experiments in both the field
and laboratory; presentation, IT and numeracy skills.

Zoology
The aim of the course is to provide a rigorous foundation in animal form, function and ecology
and to produce graduates well-qualified to undertake careers in many spheres of biology,
commerce, education and the media. The objectives are to produce graduates who: have the
ability to understand structural, functional and phylogenetic interrelationships of animals; are
capable of designing and executing simple research experiments and are able to analyse
experimental data. The course includes the development of IT skills together with training in the
presentation of scientific data orally to peers.

OUTLINE OF PROGRAMME SPECIFICATIONS FOR JOINT HONOURS PROGRAMMES
Biological Science and Geography
The objective of the course is to produce graduates who have studied both Geography and
Biosciences in some depth. The aim is to provide graduates with knowledge of geography and
the environmental and ecological areas of Biosciences. All enquiries should be directed to
Geography Department.
The aims and objectives of each degree programme are described in Module Content Section
below. A full list of the degree programmes, showing UCAS and Scheme codes together with the
names of the Degree Programme Coordinators is shown in the table below.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDY/WORK ABROAD PLACEMENTS
