<strong>2012</strong> Junior <strong>Pan</strong> <strong>Pac</strong>ific <strong>Swimming</strong> Championships <br />

18 years & under, age as of August 23, <strong>2012</strong> <br />
<strong>Selection</strong> Competition: Pool events: Summer National Championships, Edmonton, AB -‐ July 19 -‐22 <br />
5.2km event: Canadian Age Championships Open Water Event -‐ July 30 <br />

$1,500.00 <br />
I. Eligible Swimmers: <br />
Only Swimmers identified by these <strong>criteria</strong> may be considered for selection to the <strong>2012</strong> Junior <strong>Pan</strong> <strong>Pac</strong>ific <br />
<strong>Swimming</strong> Championship team. The following conditions must be satisfied to be eligible for selection: <br />
1. A Swimmer must be able to represent <strong>Canada</strong> at the <strong>2012</strong> Junior <strong>Pan</strong> <strong>Pac</strong>ific <strong>Swimming</strong> Championships in <br />
accordance with the FINA “International Relations” rules (GR 2). The FINA rules can be reviewed at <br />
www.fina.org. <br />
2. A Swimmer must possess a valid Canadian passport, current as of July 19, <strong>2012</strong>. The passport must be <br />
valid at least through to August 28, <strong>2012</strong>. <br />
3. Any Swimmer that has been nominated to the <strong>2012</strong> Olympic Games or who has competed in a Long <br />
Course World Championships, Commonwealth Games, and/or <strong>Pan</strong> <strong>Pac</strong>ific Championships (either <br />
individually or on a relay) is NOT permitted to swim at the Junior <strong>Pan</strong> <strong>Pac</strong>ific Championships. <br />
4. All parents and guardians of Swimmers identified for selection by these <strong>criteria</strong> will be required to sign the <br />
<strong>Swimming</strong> <strong>Canada</strong> Team Forms document and provide a signed copy of the same to <strong>Swimming</strong> <strong>Canada</strong> on <br />
or before July 27, <strong>2012</strong>. If the parents or guardians of a Swimmer identified for selection by these <strong>criteria</strong> <br />
fail to provide a signed copy to <strong>Swimming</strong> <strong>Canada</strong> by the prescribed date, the said Swimmer shall be <br />
deemed to have declined selection. <br />
5. Canadian citizens permanently residing outside of <strong>Canada</strong> must be registered directly with <strong>Swimming</strong> <br />
<strong>Canada</strong> or with a <strong>Swimming</strong> <strong>Canada</strong> registered swim club. <br />
6. Only swims in Olympic Events are eligible for selection. <br />
7. A Swimmers fastest time regardless of “A” or “B” final shall be utilized for selection purposes. If no <br />
eligible swims are posted in any final session (“A” or “B”) of a specific event, then Preliminary Heat times <br />
will be utilized for selection purposes. <br />
8. Individual leadoff times or splits from relay events are not eligible for selection. <br />
9. If selection is declined, the performance of the declining Swimmer will be disregarded for the purpose of <br />

these Criteria. <br />
10. <strong>Selection</strong> does not guarantee specific event entry. The final decision for individual entries and relay team <br />
composition lies with the <strong>Swimming</strong> <strong>Canada</strong> National Junior Coach. <br />
II. Individual Pool Event <strong>Selection</strong>: <br />
<strong>Selection</strong> 1 – The fastest eligible swimmer from each gender in each Olympic event shall be selected. <br />
<strong>Selection</strong> 2 – The performances by the next fastest (ie/ 2nd ranked) eligible swimmers from all Olympic events <br />
will be ranked according to the current FINA Points Chart. Swimmers will be selected in rank order to a <br />
maximum of 2 swimmers per event and to a maximum of 13 Swimmers per gender at this point in the selection <br />
process. <br />
<strong>Selection</strong> 3 – After selections 1 and 2 above are complete, the 14 th swimmer of each gender shall be <br />
determined by the next performances by eligible Swimmers of each gender from the 100m and 200m freestyle <br />
events. These Swimmers shall be ranked together utilizing the current FINA Points Chart. The highest ranked <br />
male (1) and the highest ranked female (1) Swimmer regardless of event shall be selected. <br />
<strong>Selection</strong> 4 -‐ After selections 1, 2 and 3 above have been completed, the 15 th swimmer of each gender shall be <br />
determined as any eligible Swimmer ranked 2 nd or 3 rd in an eligible event and who has not already been <br />
selected. Such Swimmers will be ranked utilizing the current FINA point chart. The highest ranked male (1) and <br />
the highest ranked female (1) Swimmer will be selected. <br />
III. Relay <strong>Selection</strong>: <br />
The members of all relays shall be determined by the coaching staff and from within the selected team <br />
complement. <br />
IV. Tie breaking: <br />
Where there is a tie in this swimmer selection process, all of the eligible performances (EXCLUDING THE <br />
PERFORMANCES IN THE TIED EVENT) by the tied Swimmers shall be ranked via the current FINA Points Chart. <br />
The tie shall be broken by the selection of the Swimmer with the highest ranked eligible performance, other <br />
than the performances in the tied event. Should a tie still exist based upon the Swimmer’s highest ranking <br />
eligible performances, then the Swimmer with the next highest ranked performance at the selection trials shall <br />
be selected. <br />
V. Open Water (10km) Event <strong>Selection</strong>: <br />
The top eligible male swimmer and the top eligible female swimmer at the <strong>2012</strong> Canadian Age Group <br />
Championship Open Water event (5.2km) shall be selected. These swimmers may also compete at the <strong>2012</strong> <br />
World Junior Open Water <strong>Swimming</strong> Championships, should they be selected for that event. (Please reference <br />
the specific Swimmer <strong>Selection</strong> Criteria for that meet for more information). <br />
VI. Unforeseen Circumstances: <br />
In the event of unforeseen or unusual circumstances, as determined by the <strong>Swimming</strong> <strong>Canada</strong> <strong>Selection</strong> <br />
Committee, the committee shall have the full discretion to resolve the matter as it sees fit, taking into account <br />
factors and circumstances that it deems relevant. Any such exercise of discretion shall be subject to the <br />
Canadian administrative law principles of fairness. <br />
VII. Changes to this Document: <br />
The <strong>Swimming</strong> <strong>Canada</strong> <strong>Selection</strong> Committee reserves the right to make changes to this document at its <br />

discretion. Any changes to this document shall be communicated directly to all Canadian <strong>Swimming</strong> Team <br />
members and published to the <strong>Swimming</strong> <strong>Canada</strong> website forthwith. Under no circumstances will changes be <br />
made to this document after July 19, <strong>2012</strong>. <br />
VIII. Appeals: <br />
The “<strong>Swimming</strong> <strong>Canada</strong> Dispute Policy” and the “<strong>Swimming</strong> <strong>Canada</strong> Appeals Policy” govern all decisions made <br />
by <strong>Swimming</strong> <strong>Canada</strong>, including issues pertaining to selection. For a copy of these policies please contact <br />
<strong>Swimming</strong> <strong>Canada</strong>. <br />
These <strong>criteria</strong> were duly created and approved by the <strong>Swimming</strong> <strong>Canada</strong> <strong>Selection</strong> Committee, which by its terms of reference <br />
have been properly delegated to perform this task by the Chief Executive Officer of <strong>Swimming</strong> <strong>Canada</strong>. <br />
These <strong>criteria</strong> have been prepared in English and translated to French. Where there may exist a discrepancy between the two <br />
versions, the English version shall be deemed to be correct. <br />
