DIVERS MEDIA PROFILES PROTOCOL MEN
MEDIA PROTOCOL
The media protocol has been designed to help achieve an understanding between all media and those
representing British Swimming. It aims to create opportunities for the media as well as appreciate the
commitments of athletes and staff. This media protocol will be utilised leading up to and during all international
competitions.
The protocol recognises that everybody is present at a major competition to do a job – whether they are athletes,
coaching staff or the media. Each group experiences its own pressure to deliver, however, consideration of each
other’s circumstances, roles and responsibilities will help ensure everybody has a successful and productive
experience.
ACCESS TO THE HEAD COACH DURING COMPETITION
Media requests in relation to the Head Coach should go through the Media Manager. Those wishing to put a
question to the Head Coach should provide as much notice as possible so the Head Coach can identify a window
of opportunity to respond. If the Head Coach is unable to respond in person, the Media Manager will pass on the
Head Coach’s views. During the competition the Head Coach will only give views on the performances of British
athletes and the team as a whole. Due to the demands of the job at hand, the Head Coach’s time will be limited
so as much prior notice to any requests would be greatly appreciated. Media may also request interviews with
the National Performance Director.
ACCESS TO BRITISH COACHES DURING COMPETITION
After the final event of the day a coach or coaches with relevance to that evening’s finals will be available to the
media at a location within the venue. This will be co-ordinated through the Media Manager. These coaches will
only speak on their athlete’s performance. Comments on the overall team performance will only be given by the
Head Coach or National Performance Director.
ACCESS TO ATHLETES OR COACHING STAFF DURING
COMPETITION
Requests for interviews with athletes or team coaching staff must go through the Media Manager. Whereas
media deadlines will always be considered, these interviews will be arranged at a time the athlete or coach can
be made available. This is obviously due to the demands of the competition on time. Athletes and team coaches
will only comment on their relevant performances. Overall comments will be provided by the Head Coach or
National Performance Director via the Media Manager.
W O R L D C H A M P I O N S H I P S 2
Access to athletes and coaches will be limited to the official mixed zone, press conferences or through prior
arrangements made via the Media Manager. All athletes will be encouraged to speak to the media, however, due
to the need to recover by ‘’swimming/warming down’’ immediately after an event, time in the mixed zone will be
limited and it is envisaged the media will collect at a good vantage point to be informed as a group rather than as
individuals. The swimmers have between three to six minutes from the time they’ve finished their race to get to the
swim down pool. Within this time there is a need to service all areas of the mixed zone - broadcast and print - fairly.
The swim down pool is off limits to all media as indicated by accreditation. No member of the British Swimming
squad will be available at swim down.
The Media Manager will try to obtain quotes from athletes if, for whatever reason, access has been limited further.
These will hopefully be provided before swim-down or drug testing. If it is not possible to meet these needs then
interviews may take place following warm-down. Where a swimmer has an event the next morning, there will be no
post swim-down interviews that evening.
If an athlete has achieved a notable result their specific coach will also be encouraged to make themselves available
to the media at the end of the session. The Media Manager or Team Manager will be present during interviews. The
Media Manager and Team Manager will always consider special requests made by the media.
When an athlete has finished their final event of the championships they will be free to consider additional media
requests made via the Media Manager. Efforts will be made to meet these as long as they don’t impact on the rest
of the team.
MEDIA NOT PRESENT AT THE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Not all media will be accredited for international events but the Media Manager and Media team in the UK will try to
look after all enquiries via phone or email. The same protocols should be followed. Athletes, staff or the Head Coach
should not be contacted directly. Their time is limited and therefore the Media Manager will arrange for information
to be forwarded at a convenient moment.
British Swimming encourages the sport to be covered by all media, present or not present. However, all media should
understand that priority has to be given to those who are in attendance at the event. Efforts will be made to meet all
requests and British Swimming asks that protocol be respected at all times.
DIVERS PROFILES MEN
MISCELLANEOUS
All media requests will be considered on their individual merits and decisions made in the best interests of British
Swimming. Several requests for separate interviews at the same time will be dealt with in order of deadlines.
Media with the tightest deadline will be dealt with first.
If photographers require access to members of the squad for non-action shots away from the competition then
all requests should be made through the Media Manager.
For all media interviews, athletes and staff will only wear British Swimming kit supplied for the event by the
team sponsor apart from unbranded swimsuits.
All interviews will only involve representatives of the British Swimming team. No persons outside of the team
will be allowed to contribute to an interview involving a British Swimming squad member.
No team member or programme-supported athlete is allowed to be part of any media team during camps or
competitions, or to disclose or discuss activities during these events.
There will be no access to athletes or coaching staff at the team hotel. It is requested that this privacy be
respected.
All media enquiries should be made to the Media Manager. If unavailable the media should approach the Team
Manager. The Media Manager and Team Manager must both be aware of all media activity.
Athletes can only talk about their own performance, coaches can only comment on athletes in their own
specific group and not the overall team performance, the Head Coach can talk on the overall team and all
matters. Support staff are unable to comment on performance.
ABOUT MELBOURNE
VENUE INFORMATION
Three venues will be used for the 12th FINA World Championships. The Swimming and Synchronised Swimming
programs will be located at Rod Laver Arena; the Water Polo and Diving programs will be held at the Melbourne
Sports and Aquatic Centre; and the Open Water Swimming events will be held at St Kilda Beach.
All of these venues are within five kilometres of one another and are also located within walking distance of the
Melbourne central business district.
ROD LAVER ARENA
The venue that will host the Swimming and
Synchronized Swimming program at the 12th
FINA World Championships is Rod Laver Arena
(RLA) which is part of the Melbourne Park
precinct.
RLA was completed in 1988 as part of the
original National Tennis Centre complex. This
multi-use venue is able to host a wide range
of sporting and entertainment events, from
Grand Slam tennis matches and motorbike
super-cross action to rock concerts, conferences
and classical ballets.
Seating capacity at RLA is approximately 15,000 but this will be reduced to approximately 11,270 during the
Championships to allow for the temporary pool and surrounding pool deck that will be installed.
Originally, the venue was known as Melbourne Park, but became known as Rod Laver Arena in January 2000 -
in recognition of the achievements of one of Australia’s greatest tennis heroes, Rod Laver.
Rod Laver remains the only player in history to have captured two tennis Grand Slams.
Laver won the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open singles titles in the same calendar year in
1962 and 1969. RLA hosted the gymnastics competition at the 2006 Commonwealth Games and the 2005 World
Gymnastics Championships.
RLA is approximately 10-minutes walk from Melbourne’s central business district.
MELBOURNE SPORTS AND AQUATIC CENTRE
The Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC) will host the men’s and women’s Water Polo competition and the
Diving competition at the 12th FINA World Championships. MSAC is a modern, international-standard sporting venue
and is the largest integrated sports complex of its type in Australia.
DIVERS PROFILES MEN
Among its list of facilities, MSAC has a
50-metre indoor swimming pool; a diving
pool; a squash centre; a table tennis hall;
indoor basketball courts; a badminton hall;
and since January 2006 a brand new ‘open
air’ 50-metre swimming pool.
The pool was built for the swimming
program at the 2006 Commonwealth
Games. The venue also hosted the diving
program at the Commonwealth Games.
MSAC is used as a training venue by elite
athletes including several members of the
Australian national swimming team, but it is also available for public use.
Since it was opened in July 1997, more than 11 million patrons have walked through MSAC’s doors. MSAC is
adjacent to the site of the Melbourne Formula One Grand Prix at Albert Park which is approximately three
kilometres from Melbourne’s central business district.
ST KILDA BEACH
St Kilda beach, the site of the Open Water Swimming events at the 12th FINA World Championships is situated
on one of the most picturesque points of Port Phillip Bay and is only a short distance from the city.
Referred to as Melbourne’s playground, St Kilda is the jewel of seaside living. Considered the forefront of the
most fashionable suburbs within Melbourne, it’s one of Melbourne’s most lively, cosmopolitan areas, attributed
to the wonderful seaside location and the major redevelopment with new apartments and retail outlets.
St Kilda is also a hugely popular area among tourists who flock there all year round to stay in hostel-style
accommodation, to enjoy the night life and to visit one of Melbourne’s most renowned landmarks, Luna Park.
St Kilda beach also attracts thousands of keen beach goers during the warmer months of the year from
December through to March.
Situated on the foreshore at St Kilda beach,
where the Open Water Swimming course
will begin, is the Royal Melbourne Yacht
Squadron which was established in 1876
and the St Kilda sea baths.
The Open Water Swimming course itself will
run between the famous St Kilda pier and
the St Kilda Marina.
NEWCOMER’S GUIDE TO SWIMMING
Swimmers often talk using their own abbreviations and words that do not apply to the outside world.
Below is a simple glossary of the most frequent terms used:
PB: Personal Best time
Splits: This is the time at each 50m turn. Swimmers will monitor these to see how they paced a race.
Taper: A swimmer will ‘taper’ prior to any major competition. What this means is that they will rest. They will
cut back the about of training they do each day and decrease the intensity also. A swimmer may swim over
12, 000m a day during heavy training, however they will swim as little as a few hundred metres the day before
an event.
Free: Freestyle or front crawl.
Breast: Breaststroke.
Fly: Butterfly.
Back: Backstroke.
I.M: Individual Medley (Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Freestyle). In a medley relay, the order is changed so
that backstroke is first. This addresses the fact that backstrokers cannot do a dive to start a race. Four swimmers
compete in one of the following strokes in the following order; backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, freestyle.
Swim-down: A recovery exercise that takes place several minutes after a swimmer completes their race.
They will swim at a low intensity in another pool in order to rid the body of lactic acid, which would have
accumulated in the muscles after high-intensity swims.
Long Course: Long Course events are those held in a 50m pool.
Shaving-down: Most swimmers shave the hair from their bodies for a big meet. Although they will remove
almost all of their body hair, the actual intention is to remove the top layer of skin from the body. This increases
the sensitivity and “feel” for the water. Even though many swimmers wear all-over body suits, shaving remains
a key psychological measure in getting prepared for a race.
The eight fastest swimmers from the heats will compete in the final. The lane order for the finals is decided
from times in the heats or semi-finals. The fastest qualifier will swim in lane 4, the second fastest in lane 5,
third fastest in lane 3, fourth in lane 6, fifth in lane 2, sixth in lane 7, seventh in lane 1 and eight in lane 8.
Theoretically, this creates a spearhead format in the race.
For the duration of the World Championships, the one-start rule will apply. Should any swimmer perform a false
start they will be disqualified from the race. Any swimmer who is moving before the start will be disqualified at
the end of the race. The start should go ahead regardless of the disqualification.
HISTORY OF DIVERS THE WORLD PROFILES CHAMPIONSHIPS
MEN
In 1968, FINA discussed the possibility of holding World Championships and offered them for a tender. There
was little interest until 1970, when, after a look at the facilities in Yugoslavia, a tender from Belgrade was
received in 1973.
Originally going to he held every two years, starting in 1971, but some European Nations were concerned that
this would conflict with the European Championships being held in the same year. Belgrade failed to follow up
their offer of hosting a World Championships in 1973 and by the end of 1971, another bid was tendered from
Vancouver. This prompted FINA to ask Belgrade to make firm their tender. No reply was forthcoming and it was
looked as though the first World Championships were going to be held in Canada. However, Yugoslavia made
the decision, last minute, to make firm their commitment to the bid to FINA.
It was realised the World Championships would never rival the Olympic Games, however it was hoped that
the Championships could grow in stature. This belief was further fuelled by the possibility of FINA reducing the
Olympic programme from 29 events to 19, with the World Championships including all events.
1973 - Belgrade, Yugoslavia
British medal tally - 1 GOLD
1 BRONZE
The first ever World Championships began on the 31st August 1973. Water polo was the first event the following
day, although Britain did not fare too well and finished 15th.
Synchronized Swimming was included in a major competition for the first time alongside other aquatic sport.
The Great Britain Synchro team finished the Championships ranked 6th in the world.
Swimming proved itself to be a great first championships for Britain, with David Wilkie taking gold and a World
record in the 200m Breaststroke in a time of 2.19.28. He broke the British record in the 100m Breaststroke when
he finished 4th in 1.05.74 and in the Individual Medley, despite a disastrous backstroke turn, finished 3rd to
clinch the bronze medal.
The East German Women’s swimming team made the biggest impression on the Championships, not only for
taking 10 out of 14 gold medals available, but also for their huge physiques meaning rumours of drug
involvement were rife.
Overall, the World Championships proved to be a big success for FINA.
1975 - Cali, Columbia
British medal tally - 2 GOLD
1 SILVER
4 BRONZE
David Wilkie won gold in the 100m and 200m Breaststroke, the 800m Freestyle team took silver and bronze
medals were won by David Parker in the 1500m Freestyle, David Leigh in the 100m Breaststroke and Brian
Brinkley in the 200m Freestyle and 200m Butterfly. The men’s Medley team also took bronze with an incredible
spilt of 1.03.49 from Wilkie taking the team from 6th in the race to a bronze medal. Later that year, the men’s
team won the BBC’s Sports Team of the Year Award.
1978 - Berlin, West Germany
British medal tally - 2 BRONZE
The third World Championships were held in the revamped 1936 Olympic pool, which saw Britain win 2 bronze
W O R L D C H A M P I O N S H I P S 18
medals thanks to the men’s Medley Team and Margaret Kelly in the 100m Breaststroke. The British Team also
produced 10 British/English records and 2 Commonwealth records.
These Championships saw the success of the East German women’s team of 1975 pale behind the Americans,
with them taking 13 gold medals and breaking 5, and equalling 1 World Record. In contrast, the East German
women could only muster 1 gold.
1982 - Guayaquil, Equador
British medal tally - 1 SILVER
An incredible swim by 17 year-old Jackie Willmott in the 800m Freestyle gained her, and the British Team a silver
medal. The Championships also saw 3 new British records as well as 4 new English records.
David Wilkie’s 6-year 200m Breaststroke World Record also fell during the Championships to Canada’s Victor
Davies. Wilkie had held the record since 1973 when he broke it in the first ever World Championships, and then
breaking it again at the Montreal Olympic Games in 1976. Wilkie’s World record time has stood as a Scottish
record until the final qualifying event for the 2003 World Championships when Ian Edmond broke it to qualify for
Japan.
1986 - Madrid, Spain
British medal tally - 2 BRONZE
This year saw Great Britain win 2 bronze medals. Andrew Jameson took bronze in the 100m Butterfly and Sarah
Hardcastle in the 400m Freestyle. Disaster hit Adrian Moorhouse in the 100m Breaststroke when he touched first,
the result flashed up on the scoreboard with an announcement that it was official, only moments later another
announcement was made declaring the result was being checked. The scoreboard then showed that the gold
medal had been awarded to Victor Davis, the Canadian who was sadly killed in 1991. It was later revealed that
Adrian had been disqualified for a dolphin kick at the turn.
1991- Perth, Western Australia
British medal tally - 2 SILVER
1 BRONZE
Preceding the official schedule, there was a day of sprints held as demonstration events with a view to include
them in future championships. Lorraine Coombes swam in the 50m Breaststroke and broke the British record
in the heats and went on to take silver in the final. Martin Harris also broke the British Record in the 50m
Backstroke.
Great Britain went on to do better this Championships, with Adrian Moorhouse adding silver for his performance
in the 100m Breaststroke and a bronze for Nick Gillingham in the 200m Breaststroke.
The Hungarian, Norbert Rozsa broke the World record to take gold in the 100m Breaststroke, with Adrian
finishing just 7 one hundredths behind him, also bettering the World Record.
This year’s event also saw the inclusion of the 1m Diving event and Open Water men’s and women’s 25km
events for the first time.
1994 - Rome, Italy
With less then two weeks between the finish of the Commonwealth Games and the start of the World
Championships, there was little time for the British Team to reflect on their success of 5 gold medals.
DIVERS PROFILES MEN
The only successes the team came home with from Italy were breaking 3 British and 1 Commonwealth records.
The British record came from Adam Ruckwood in the 200m Backstroke, the Women’s 4x100m Freestyle team and
Karen Pickering who also broke the Commonwealth record and became the first women under 56 seconds for the
100m Freestyle.
1998 - Perth, Western Australia
British medal tally - 2 BRONZE
The second time the event has been held in Perth and this time drug issues cast a shadow on the Championships,
with China making headline news before and during the event.
Great Britain improved on the last Championships, taking 2 bronze medals in the 400m Freestyle courtesy of
Paul Palmer and in the men’s 4x200m Freestyle relay team, comprising of Paul Palmer, Gavin Meadows, Andrew
Clayton and Jamie Salter.
In the Diving, Great Britain’s Tony and Mark Shipman narrowly lost out on a medal in the newly included 3m
Synchronised event. 1998 also saw the inclusion of the 10m Synchronised Diving event and the 5km Open Water
event.
2001- Fukuoka, Japan
British medal tally - 1 GOLD
2 SILVER
4 BRONZE
In the swimming events, 8 Championships Records and 54 Continental Records were set. The likes of Ian Thorpe,
Olga Brusnikina, Viola Valli and Dmitri Sautin were all on show to the world to see and other many newcomers
had also the opportunity to show off their talents.
Great Brtain’s 4x200m Freestyle team took gold. Graeme Smith took silver in the 1500m Freestyle and bronze in
the 800m Freestyle. The women’s 4x100m Freestyle team won silver while Mark Foster, Zoe Baker and Jo Fargus
all took bronze.
2003 - Barcelona, Spain
British medal tally - 2 GOLD
3 SILVER
3 BRONZE
Katy Sexton and James Gibson fought of a number of world-class swimmers to become World Champions.
This was Great Britain’s most successful World Championships to date, with all medallists putting in great
performances.
Sexton also won silver, and Gibson winning bronze with Ian Edmond and Mark Foster adding two silvers and
Rebecca Cooke and Zoe Baker adding two more bronze medals.
These Championships saw Michael Phelps broke 5 world records, beating the total of 4 World records broken by
Mark Spitz in the 1972 Olympic Games.
2005 - Montreal, Canada
British medal tally - 3 BRONZE
Liam Tancock, Caitlin McClatchey and David Davies were the only members of the British contingent to walk
away with a medal.
