produced 10 British/English records and 2 Commonwealth records.<br />
These Championships saw the success of the East German women’s team of 1975 pale behind the Americans,<br />
with them taking 13 gold medals and breaking 5, and equalling 1 <strong>World</strong> Record. In contrast, the East German<br />
women could only muster 1 gold.<br />
1982 - Guayaquil, Equador<br />
British medal tally - 1 SILVER<br />
An incredible swim by 17 year-old Jackie Willmott in the 800m Freestyle gained her, and the British Team a silver<br />
medal. The Championships also saw 3 new British records as well as 4 new English records.<br />
David Wilkie’s 6-year 200m Breaststroke <strong>World</strong> Record also fell during the Championships to Canada’s Victor<br />
Davies. Wilkie had held the record since 1973 when he broke it in the first ever <strong>World</strong> Championships, and then<br />
breaking it again at the Montreal Olympic Games in 1976. Wilkie’s <strong>World</strong> record time has stood as a Scottish<br />
record until the final qualifying event for the 2003 <strong>World</strong> Championships when Ian Edmond broke it to qualify for<br />
Japan.<br />
1986 - Madrid, Spain<br />
British medal tally - 2 BRONZE<br />
This year saw Great Britain win 2 bronze medals. Andrew Jameson took bronze in the 100m Butterfly and Sarah<br />
Hardcastle in the 400m Freestyle. Disaster hit Adrian Moorhouse in the 100m Breaststroke when he touched first,<br />
the result flashed up on the scoreboard with an announcement that it was official, only moments later another<br />
announcement was made declaring the result was being checked. The scoreboard then showed that the gold<br />
medal had been awarded to Victor Davis, the Canadian who was sadly killed in 1991. It was later revealed that<br />
Adrian had been disqualified for a dolphin kick at the turn.<br />
1991- Perth, Western Australia<br />

Preceding the official schedule, there was a day of sprints held as demonstration events with a view to include<br />
them in future championships. Lorraine Coombes swam in the 50m Breaststroke and broke the British record<br />
in the heats and went on to take silver in the final. Martin Harris also broke the British Record in the 50m<br />
Backstroke.<br />
Great Britain went on to do better this Championships, with Adrian Moorhouse adding silver for his performance<br />
in the 100m Breaststroke and a bronze for Nick Gillingham in the 200m Breaststroke.<br />
The Hungarian, Norbert Rozsa broke the <strong>World</strong> record to take gold in the 100m Breaststroke, with Adrian<br />
finishing just 7 one hundredths behind him, also bettering the <strong>World</strong> Record.<br />
This year’s event also saw the inclusion of the 1m Diving event and Open Water men’s and women’s 25km<br />
events for the first time.<br />
1994 - Rome, Italy<br />
With less then two weeks between the finish of the Commonwealth Games and the start of the <strong>World</strong><br />
Championships, there was little time for the British Team to reflect on their success of 5 gold medals.<br />
