Yet, it is not so easy to keep New Year resolutions as old
habits of mind and action start to test one's resolve and
pull people away from the new ones that were created.
Common New Year Resolutions include:
Quit smoking
Quit drinking
Lose weight
Join gym
Go back to school
Pay off debts
Get organised
Tips on how to keep your New Year Resolution
1. Know Your Why. For a resolution to stick, it
has to be aligned with your core values. You
h a v e t o “ K n o w w h y ” a n d f e e l t r u l y
passionate about the goals you have set for
yourself.
2. Be Specific. Describe your goals and
resolutions in ways that will allow you to keep track of
your progress and measure your success.
3. Don't Just Think It, Ink it! A Stanford
U n i v e r s i t y s t u d y f o u n d t h a t w h e n
people wrote down their goals, it increased the
probability of them achieving it by over 70%.
4 . D e s i g n Yo u r E n v i r o n m e n t . N e v e r
underestimate the power of your environment to
support or sabotage your success. Design
your environment so that it's hard NOT to do
what you resolved.
5. Narrow Your Efforts. Trying to do too many
things at once can make you unfocused.
Break those goals down into small bite size steps.
Small steps, strong start!
6. Focus on the Process. It's easy to get caught
up in an initial wave of enthusiasm but lose focus
when your initial efforts don't produce
immediate and amazing results. So, focus on the
process itself and develop greater competence of
the actual activity, habit or skill you want to
acquire. PERSISTENCE ALWAYS PAYS OFF.
7. Forgive Your Failures. Your setbacks and
failures will not define your success in the year
ahead or any year; HOW YOU RESPOND WILL. If
you happen to mess up, lose your resolve or
revert to a familiar well-practiced behavior, don't
beat up on yourself. Reflect on the lessons they
hold, make adjustments accordingly and get
back in the saddle. Life rewards those who work at it.
Keeping Healthy
High Blood Cholesterol:
What You Need To Know
Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that is found in
all cells of the body. Your body needs some cholesterol
to work the right way. However, blood is watery, and
cholesterol is fatty. Just like oil and water, the two do
not mix.
Your blood cholesterol level has a lot to do with your
chances of getting disease. High blood cholesterol is
one of the major risk factors for heart disease. A risk
factor is a condition that increases your chances of
getting disease. Infact, the higher your blood
cholesterol level, the greater your risk of developing
heart disease or having a heart attack.
When there is too much cholesterol in your blood, it
builds up in the walls of your arteries. Over time, this
build up causes “hardening of the arteries” so that the
arteries become narrowed and bloodflow to the heart
is slowed down or blocked. The blood carries oxygen to
the heart, and if enough blood and oxygen cannot
reach your heart, you may suffer chest pain. If the blood
supply to a portion of the heart is completely cut off by
a blockage, the result is a heart attack.
High cholesterol level is associated with three
risk factors:
?Lifestyle risk factors- Unhealthy diet, lack of e x e r c i s e
and physical activity, obesity, smoking and excessive
intake of alcohol.
?Treatable risk factors- Hypertension, diabetes and
other medical conditions such as kidney and liver
disease.
?Fixed risk factors- Family history of heart disease, age,
early menopause and ethnic group.
Preventive measures:
?Eat a healthy, balanced diet –Eat foods such as oily
fish, avocado, nuts and seeds, olive oil and vegetable
oil; these are low in saturated fat
?Lose weight – This will help reduce your cholesterol
level
?Exercise regularly
?Carry out a blood test if you have family history of
cholesterol problems.
Imoukhuede, Group Managing Director/CEO, Access Bank Plc and Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Lead Actor, Inside
Story during the Première of Inside Story: The Science of HIV/AIDS at the SilverBird Galleria in Lagos.
Access Bank Plc’s commitment towards building a healthier world through its fight against
HIV/AIDS recently received a boost at the premiere of “ Inside Story: The Science of
HIV/AIDS.”
The movie, captured in compelling story of sports, love and ill fate, was developed to enlighten
audiences about HIV/AIDS and raise the level of awareness about the disease among mankind
in partnership with UNAIDS, Discovery Communications, Discovery Channel Global Education
Partnership (DCGEP), Chevron, Management Sciences for Health and some other global
organizations.
Speaking on the collaboration, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, Access Bank's Group Managing
Director said "the Bank's intervention in the health space is a responsible approach to managing
the impact of the triple pandemics of HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria through effective workplace
programmes, partnerships and community involvement that seek to reduce the effect of the
pandemics on employees, their families, supply chain, clients and society in general."
He added that “the partnerships between organizations are essential and Inside Story is one of
such partnerships. The film will help ensure that awareness and education about HIV/AIDS
reaches the grassroots and shapes behaviour.”
Also, Ambassador Eric Goosby, United States AIDS Coordinator, who attended the film
premiere said “Inside Story will be a valuable tool to inform people across Africa and the world
about the science of HIV. With greater understanding of the virus, people can seek to know
their status, protect themselves and adhere to life-saving treatment if needed."
He added that “the global AIDS response is a shared responsibility. With strong leadership from
the United States, and continued partnership from the private sector, we are seizing the
opportunity the science has presented us to move toward an AIDS-free generation.”
Stressing the importance of knowledge and awareness in the struggle against the HIV/AIDS,
Aric Noboa, President Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership and the Executive
Producer, Inside Africa said "Knowledge is power, with Inside Story, we have a powerful tool
with which to share the science of HIV, adding that Inside Story is an African film for African
audiences that tackles a global pandemic. We are honored to premiere the film here in South
Africa and thankful for the generous support of our partners. “Understanding HIV/AIDS is
central to making healthy decisions, complying with treatment and ending stigma and
discrimination. This is the right time for Inside Story, an innovative approach to helping
eradicate HIV/AIDS in Africa and beyond”, said Aric.
Following the premiere of the film in Johannesburg and United States of America in January
2012, a comprehensive rollout of the film - including national broadcasts across sub-Saharan
Africa and distribution through grassroots efforts of NGOs, schools and governments will
commence. Also, DCGEP will provide facilitator guides and DVD & online materials for use by
community and public health organizations, as well as schools throughout Africa, to reinforce
Inside Story's messages in both urban and rural communities.
Discovery World, the factual TV channel operated by Discovery Networks, will also support the
project by airing the trailer and shots across Africa in conjunction with the release of the film.
