Taxi Industry leads green charge The Australian Taxi Industry is leading the charge into green vehicles, with more than 10% of the new Toyota Camry Hybrid being sold for cabs and rental cars. Official figures show that within the first six months of the Hybrid Camry rolling off its Melbourne assembly lines, nearly 3,000 vehicles were sold of which 333 were to taxi owners. About 550 are being used by Toyota, another 500 have been bought by business fleets and private buyers have purchased around 650 of the vehicles. Despite the Taxi Industry’s purchases many say the Federal Government’s billion dollar green car scheme has stalled on the starting grid. The Toyota Hybrid Camry was the first subsidised project to boost local manufacturing and was forecast to sell 10,000 vehicles in the first year. But the sales have been well below expectations in a booming market, despite aggressive marketing and advertising. Other Green Car Projects include Holden’s plan to return small-car manufacturing to Australia with the ‘Cruze’, which attracted $149 million in funding and Ford’s four-cylinder Falcon and diesel Territory, which got $421 million. All are due on sale next year. Meantime, the Toyota Prius which launched a new model a year ago is also underperforming. Sales are down 15% with little more than 1,000 vehicles sold this year. Memories of Timor Leste at the Immigration Museum A new exhibition that celebrates an East Timorese ritual devoted to remembering those who have departed will go on view at the Immigration Museum from 19 September 2010 to 10 April 2011. Honouring our Ancestors: Remembering Timor Leste explores Se Matebian, a ritual that takes place each year on 2 November or All Souls Day. This significant ritual honours East Timorese ancestors and brings to mind all those who died during the battle for independence from Indonesian rule from 1975 to 1999. Honouring our Ancestors looks at how the East Timorese community in Australia continues to practise this ritual today. Se Matebian means ‘to whom this soul belongs’. The ritual involves offerings of food for departed family and friends and prayers for their protection and guidance followed by feasting. In Timor Leste, All Souls Day celebrations also include processions to Mount Matebian which has been regarded as a resting place for souls for countless generations. “Se Matebian is a happy celebration”, said Filomena Freitas. “We are filled with joy and burdens are lifted. We sit and eat knowing that our ancestors’ souls are near us”.
