Hey guys, I thought you might like a little<br />
report on this years masters. If you were<br />
not there you missed one of the best<br />
contests in a long time. I have been to all<br />
four of the Muncie based Masters and<br />
flown in the flyoffs twice, which means I<br />
have flown 58 rounds, which gives me a<br />
great perspective from which to observe<br />
the competition. This also means I have<br />
been burned and done a little burning<br />
myself.<br />
Every kind of condition existed this year<br />
from dead calm to 30+ mph winds,<br />
rain, cold, you name it. This was a real<br />
test of man and machine. Aspires were<br />
the plane of choice and in the wind got<br />
great launches and penetrated well.<br />
However, the few times the wind was not<br />
blowing put them at a big disadvantage<br />
against the light weight Maxas and super<br />
light Explorers. Being at the optimum<br />
ballasted weight was crucial to doing well<br />
in every round. Being too heavy meant<br />
that getting that great save or climbing<br />
with the group was almost impossible.<br />
Being too light meant you could climb<br />
out only to get way down wind with no<br />
way to get back!<br />
Having a good caller was also critical,<br />
made even harder because of the short<br />
time between groups, and the random<br />
order made sure you had to get someone<br />
different to call almost every round.<br />
Trying to follow other planes down wind<br />
led to many land-outs in the beans<br />
