In May of 1938, representaves from area instuons of higher learning
gathered in Fresno, Calif., to form a unique collegiate athlec organizaon
dedicated to America’s community and junior colleges. The meeng led to the
adopon of a constuon and representaves in aendance formally
announced the new organizaon as the Naonal Junior College Athlec Associa‐
on (NJCAA).
Seventy‐five years aer its inaugural season (1938‐39), the NJCAA is now the
second‐largest naonal intercollegiate athlec governing body in the United
States with over 500 member colleges in 43 states. Recognized as the leader in
two‐year collegiate athlecs, the NJCAA champions both athlec and academic
opportunies for student‐athletes in concert with its member colleges.
In 1974, the NJCAA’s inaugural Naonal Volleyball
Invitaonal Tournament became the first collegiate
championship held for women by a co‐ed collegiate
organizaon. The tournament would evolve into a
naonal championship just two years later as the sport
began to spread to campuses across the country. Nearly
38 years later, 314 teams from 35 States will compete
for naonal championships across three divisions.
To commemorate its 75th Anniversary, the NJCAA will launch a year‐long
campaign to celebrate the milestones, student‐athletes, coaches, and
administrators that have helped shape the organizaon and advance
two‐year collegiate athlecs over the past eight decades.
Throughout the 2012‐13 academic year, the NJCAA will celebrate its 75th
Anniversary through various outlets, including a special secon of the NJCAA
website: NJCAA.org/75. Tradional press releases will be distributed to member
colleges as well as regional and naonal media during the 2012‐13 sports season
and special 75th Anniversary content will be produced for the organizaon’s
monthly publicaon ‐ NJCAA Review. NJCAA TV, powered by iHigh.com, as well
as Facebook and Twier will be used to help keep member colleges, fans and
followers informed on the latest 75th Anniversary news and announcements.
CLASS OF 2011
Two new members of the NJCAA Volleyball Coaches Associaon
Hall of Fame were inducted Nov. 15, 2011. The 2011 inductees
included former Blinn College (Texas) head coach David Rehr and
former Western Nebraska Community College head coach Chris
Green.
David Rehr (Former Blinn College Head Coach)
In nine seasons as head volleyball coach for Blinn College, Rehr
Blinn in 2003, the program had not previously earned a bid to the
NJCAA Naonal Tournament. In his inaugural season, the
Buccaneers won their first 41 matches on their way to a 43‐2
season and a sixth‐place finish in the NJCAA Division I ranks.
Chris Green (Former Western Nebraska CC Head Coach)
Green, who is the current head coach at University of Alaska –
Anchorage, spent the previous nine seasons (1999‐07) as the head
coach at Western Nebraska Community College in Scosbluff, Neb.
During his tenure he built a naonal championship contending
program, compiling a 453‐55 record. His 2007 squad won the
NJCAA Division I naonal tle and his teams finished in the top 10
naonally in all his seasons leading the program, including a string
