Passive Sonar LOPAS
Compact and Economic Sonar System

DISCOVER THE UNKNOWN
Passive Sonar LOPAS
Perfect Solution for Refi ts and Midgets
LOPAS is a passive sonar system for refi t on board a submarine during modernization or for new
designed small submarines. The key benefi t is its unbeaten cost effectiveness caused by focusing
on essential features for an effective submarine operation. LOPAS operates with all present bow
arrays or L-3 ELAC Nautik’s own supply.
General
LOPAS has been developed to exchange outdated or
obsolete original passive sonar systems. Due to its
compactness it typically fi ts into the space of the former
console without the need for any rearrangement of
nearby equipment.
A rigorous concept to re-use existing components as
inboard cables, preamplifi er boxes and even the array,
lowers the efforts for the replacement. Most important
is the ability of LOPAS to adapt to the existing interfaces,
e.g. Fire Control Systems or Gyros.
L-3 ELAC Nautik’s experience as a supplier of hydrophones
and associated supplies makes us the ideal
one-stop shop even in case that the original sensors, cables, baffl es or pressure
hull penetrations (PHPs) need to be exchanged as well. L-3 ELAC Nautik may
perform refurbishments of a PHP as well. As a result we return a fully rebuilt and
tested PHP to the customer, saving valuable budgets.
Built-in growth potential
LOPAS is not limited to the passive bow sonar. It may also integrate an already
installed intercept sonar or even an active sonar. As a result the original operational
concept remains valid. L-3 ELAC Nautik also offers an onboard simulator
for an easy and (cost) effective onboard training. This laptop or PC based system
supports training of the sonar operator based on pre-defi ned scenarios. All of
this for a fraction of the typical cost connected to such systems.
System Overview
Simple and Effective Integration
Easy layout for perfect integration
The central component of the LOPAS system is the operator console MP 90.
All electronics for beamforming, processing, control and display are combined
in this ultra compact console.
For an easy installation of the console, it can be dismantled in three parts: the
upper and lower casing and keyboard part. These single parts even fi t through
the hatches of a submarine and can be reassembled in the Combat Information
Centre (CIC) then. So even without cutting the hull the console can easily be
installed.
LOPAS interfaces to existing Fire Control Systems,
Gyros, plotting tables or periscopes. L-3 ELAC Nautik
takes over such task, provided that a suffi cient interface
description of these systems is available.
L-3 ELAC Nautik refi ts new preamplifi ers to the existing housing (in case of a
refi t) or delivers new supplies for new designs. PHPs may be refurbished and
re-used as well or delivered new. In case of a refurbishment L-3 ELAC Nautik
also requalifi es the PHPs by pressure testing in our own pressure tanks.
KE 9 hydrophones
The hydrophone array can be re-used as well or refi tted with new supplies by
L-3 ELAC Nautik, e.g. different KE 9 hydrophone types that replace P20 or P200
hydrophones. The same applies for the outboard cables. Even a complete new
hydrophone array may be designed and delivered.
