This course focuses on learning<br />
strategies to help students become<br />
better independent learners. Students will<br />
learn how to develop and apply literacy<br />
and numeracy skills, personal management<br />
skills, and develop a greater sense of awareness<br />
of their learning style and their Individual<br />
Education Plan (IEP). Students will focus<br />
on assistive technology tools to support<br />
their academic goals. This course helps students<br />
develop self-advocacy skills for life<br />
long learning.<br />

<strong>GLE</strong>2O<br />
The focus of the <strong>GLE</strong>20 course is on literacy.<br />
This course helps students prepare for the Ontario<br />
Secondary School Literacy Test focusing<br />
on reading for meaning, specifically informational,<br />
narrative and graphic reading, as well as<br />
paragraph writing, news reports, summaries<br />
and opinion pieces. This course also offers students<br />
an opportunity to gain exposure to assistive<br />
technology and to develop strategies to<br />
assist the students to become more<br />
successful during their adolescent years.<br />
<strong>GLE</strong>3O/ <strong>GLE</strong>4O<br />
This course improves students’ learning and<br />
personal-management skills, preparing them<br />
to make successful transitions to work,<br />
apprenticeship or postsecondary education<br />
destinations.<br />
Students will assess their learning<br />
abilities and use literacy, research skills and<br />
personal-management techniques to maximize<br />
their learning. Students will investigate<br />
resources to support their postsecondary<br />
employment, apprenticeship or education<br />
choices and develop a plan to help them<br />
meet their learning and career goals. This<br />
course helps students to further develop self<br />
-advocacy skills required for post-secondary<br />
success.<br />

What is <strong>Assistive</strong> Technology? Tools That Can Help Students Benefit To Students<br />
<strong>Assistive</strong> technology is any<br />
technology that allows one to increase,<br />
maintain, or improve the functional capabilities<br />
of an individual with special<br />
learning needs (Edyburn, 2000). Its applications<br />
and adaptations can help open<br />
doors to previously inaccessible learning<br />
opportunities for many children.<br />
<strong>Assistive</strong> technology computer<br />
programs are fitted with particular features<br />
designed to assist specific functions<br />
Computer-based assistive technology can<br />
provide student with:<br />

• computer-assisted instruction;<br />
• drill and practice;<br />
• training;<br />
• organization strategies;<br />
• the ability to publish;<br />
• functional skills, such as keyboarding<br />
and computer skills;<br />
