This course focuses on learning
strategies to help students become
better independent learners. Students will
learn how to develop and apply literacy
and numeracy skills, personal management
skills, and develop a greater sense of awareness
of their learning style and their Individual
Education Plan (IEP). Students will focus
on assistive technology tools to support
their academic goals. This course helps students
develop self-advocacy skills for life
long learning.

GLE2O
The focus of the GLE20 course is on literacy.
This course helps students prepare for the Ontario
Secondary School Literacy Test focusing
on reading for meaning, specifically informational,
narrative and graphic reading, as well as
paragraph writing, news reports, summaries
and opinion pieces. This course also offers students
an opportunity to gain exposure to assistive
technology and to develop strategies to
assist the students to become more
successful during their adolescent years.
GLE3O/ GLE4O
This course improves students’ learning and
personal-management skills, preparing them
to make successful transitions to work,
apprenticeship or postsecondary education
destinations.
Students will assess their learning
abilities and use literacy, research skills and
personal-management techniques to maximize
their learning. Students will investigate
resources to support their postsecondary
employment, apprenticeship or education
choices and develop a plan to help them
meet their learning and career goals. This
course helps students to further develop self
-advocacy skills required for post-secondary
success.

What is Assistive Technology? Tools That Can Help Students Benefit To Students
Assistive technology is any
technology that allows one to increase,
maintain, or improve the functional capabilities
of an individual with special
learning needs (Edyburn, 2000). Its applications
and adaptations can help open
doors to previously inaccessible learning
opportunities for many children.
Assistive technology computer
programs are fitted with particular features
designed to assist specific functions
Computer-based assistive technology can
provide student with:
• access to information;
• computer-assisted instruction;
• drill and practice;
• training;
• organization strategies;
• the ability to publish;
• functional skills, such as keyboarding
and computer skills;
• study strategies ;
