EQAO ASSESSMENTS OF
READING, WRITING & MATHEMATICS
As in previous years, our Grade 3
and 6 students will participate in the
Education Quality and Accountability
Office (EQAO) Primary and Junior
Division assessments of reading, writing and
mathematics between May 27 th and June 6 th , 2013.
Students will be required to complete three test booklets:
one mathematics booklet, one reading booklet and one
writing booklet. The types of questions in the booklets
will be familiar to your child as they are based on the
kinds of work your child has been doing throughout the
year. The total amount of time that the students will
spend on the testing will be six hours that is generally
spread over the course of two or three days. Sample
questions can be viewed on the EQAO website at
www.eqao.com.
We ask that you make every effort to avoid holidays
and booking appointments during the week of May
27th - June 6th and to try to make sure your children
are in attendance each day during the assessment.
The EQAO assessment results help us to continue to
improve upon the quality Catholic education offered to
your children. Additional specific information regarding
the assessments will be sent home to our Grade 3 and 6
parents in the coming weeks.
FOOD ALLERGY REMINDERS
As the final weeks of the school year approach, we
would like to thank you for your cooperation and
diligence in packing peanut/nut free lunches and snacks
for your children.
Please be reminded that look alike items like
PeaButter and Wowbutter, etc. cannot be permitted as
these products are almost identical in colour,
consistency, smell and taste to peanut butter. As such,
schools cannot be expected to monitor for student
safety when it is impossible to differentiate between
these products and peanut butter. Therefore, we ask
that parents do not send their children to school with
these look-a-like products to peanut butter.
Also, please note that Nutella is also a nut product and,
as such, cannot be consumed at school.
We thank you for your continued support in keeping
all of our students safe!
Study after study has shown us that student achievement
improves when parents play an active role in their
children's education. Good schools become even better
schools when parents are involved.

CURRICULUM CORNER
Support Your Child by Sharing Test-Taking Tips
Your child has a big test tomorrow and you want them to
do their best. How can you help? During the test, tell
your child to remember to:
- Focus on directions. Whether they are given out loud
or are written, she should ask about anything that is
unclear.
- Write down information. If he struggles to memorize
something, he should write it down as soon as the test
starts, in case he needs it later.
- Start with the easiest question to earn the most
points. She should mark the hardest ones and go back to
those last.
- Remember true/false tricks. If any part of the answer
is false, the whole answer is false!
- Use multiple-choice strategies. He should try to
answer the question before looking at the choices. Or, he
can eliminate the wrong answers and see what’s left.
INSPIRATION RUN IN SUPPORT OF
HALTON FOOD FOR THOUGHT
- Look for fill-in-the-blank hints. If the blank line is
short, the answer should be short, too.
- Match the best answers. She should avoid matching
too quickly and consider all options. If one is a mystery,
answering the others may solve it.
- Outline essays. Instead of writing freely, he should
make a plan and stick to main points and key details.
Even a brief outline is better than no answer.
MOUNTSBERG
Halton Food for Thought is very privileged that, once
again, the Meredith Hagan Foundation has chosen their
agency to be the Charity of Choice for their annual
“InspirationRun” on June 22 nd in memory of Meredith
Hagan.
Did you know in Halton region 4% of 5 year olds come
to school hungry? By the age of 12, this trend increases
to 35% ... and by age 15, a startling 51% of students go
to school hungry and without breakfast.
Halton Food for Thought’s Mission is to inspire children
and youth to make healthy choices vital to their
development, by providing inclusive access to nutritious
foods throughout the school day. Their Vision is to
facilitate a student nutrition program in every school,
thereby improving the learning capacity, health and
well-being of all children and youth in Halton Region.
For more information please visit:
www.haltonfoodforthought.com
Come out and enjoy the day with your friends and
family! The day offers a 5km WALK, 5km run and, for
those more daring, a 10 km run. Events take place at

Mountsberg Conservation Area and are unique TRAIL
runs. Register now at
www.meredithhaganfoundation.com
Remember, your support of Halton Food for Thought
directly impacts our ability to provide the Healthy
Snack program here at St. Anthony’s.
KISS AND RIDE AREA REMINDERS
We respectfully remind parents to please drive carefully
in the Kiss and Ride zone and to adhere to the following
guidelines to ensure a safe and orderly flow of traffic.
The curb lane is only for dropping-off or picking-up
students. The lane to the left of the pylons marks the exit
lane from the parking lot. Do not pass another vehicle
in the Kiss and Ride zone or back up your vehicle at
either gate. Pull your vehicle up in the queue for the
Kiss and Ride lane before letting your child(ren) out of
the vehicle at the curb side. If you walk your child(ren)
to either gate, please park in the designated parking lot
to prevent congestion at the back pavement gate or at the
kindergarten gate.
Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
IF YOUR CHILD IS NOT RETURNING TO
ST. ANTHONY’S IN SEPTEMBER…
Please let the office know as soon as possible if you
know that you are moving and/or if your child will not
be returning in September 2013. We are beginning
preliminary planning for next year’s class sizes and this
information is very helpful in the planning process.
CLASS PLACEMENTS IN SEPTEMBER
Preparations will soon begin to ensure that our school is
organized for the 2013-2014 school year. When building
a class, many factors are considered in the decisions to
develop heterogeneous groupings such as: balance of
abilities, gender, learning style, and social blending.
Parental input is very important in this process, however,
requests for specific teachers cannot be considered;
rather submit a letter to the Principal by May 24 th
describing the learning style and needs of your child.
Your trust in our professional judgment is appreciated.
REPORT CARDS
It’s hard to believe, but the school year is quickly
coming to a close. The third term report cards will be
going home on Monday, June 24 th . Students are
encouraged to continue to work hard and to set goals to
achieve academic success. Kids learn best when school
and families work as a team. Please contact your child’s
teacher with any questions or concerns about your
child’s progress.
HOT WEATHER
Please ensure your child is appropriately and modestly
attired for the hot, humid weather and sunshine that will
soon bless our days at school. We respectfully remind
our students and parents when choosing clothing for
school to pick tops that have shoulder straps which are at
least four-fingers wide and cover the midriff, and shorts
that are mid-thigh in length and sit at the waistline.
We also remind our students that flip-flops are
discouraged as they pose a safety issue when engaging
in outdoor play. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
It is also advisable that students bring re-usable water
bottles to school to prevent dehydration in the hot
weather and to apply sunscreen (prior to arriving at
school) to reduce their long-term exposure to harmful
UV rays.
