He firmly believed the Police Service Board was a key factor in improving the quality of this state’s police force and lifting it above that of states to our north. “With the abolition of the Police Service Board in 1993 by the Kennett government he predicted 15 years ago that … “Things will change … not all of them for the good”. As the evening went on the war stories were flowing including an hilarious tale of ingenuity. One retiree was overheard reminiscing about the days when to hide the fact they’d had a beer in the mess room at the end of a long shift they would dust the beer bottles before putting them in the bin. If the boss spotted them he would presume they were discarded, possible exhibits. Brian Rix also made special mention of the partners of the retirees. “A big thank you for your untiring efforts in making sure they get to work and for picking up the pieces when they come home. Now they have retired, I’m sure they will be getting under your feet, but I am also sure that there will be much time to enjoy your relationships and, of course, spend the superannuation.” And with the financial situation on the improve travel was high on the discussion list with retirees and former Association Delegate Dave Stanley regaling tales of his motorcycle adventure in South America and his plans to ride through China and Russia. Those more interested in spending their time closer to home were discussing the virtues of the campervan versus the caravan and vehicle fuel consumption. Former Superintendent Paul Murnane responded on behalf of the retirees. He recalled the days when there was true liaison between the Force and the Association when Tom Rippon was Secretary of the Association and Mick Miller the Chief Commissioner. “There was no doubt when Mick Miller couldn’t get something through Government Tom Rippon could,” said Paul. Paul thanked the Association for always being there for the members. “As the father of a serving member, I draw comfort in the knowledge that The Police Association is there. On behalf of the retired members thank you for being there, for support of the members and the work that you do. It is onerous.” As a parting thought Paul Murnane, who served for 36 and a half years, questioned the current trend to employ university graduates as members of the Force. “I didn’t do too bad for a kid from Rochester who got through Year 10. What the Force should be saying is ‘give me someone with intestinal fortitude who wants to be a police person and I will put the finishing touches on them’.” www.tpav.org.au The Police Association Journal November 2009
