SPRING/SUMMER 2010 • CANADA EDITION
FEATURED PROJECT
Evergreen Basic Needs Building
Gimli, MB
PRODUCTS USED: Bakor VP160
GENERAL CONTRACTOR: Pre-Con Builders, Winnipeg
AIR BARRIER INSTALLER: TFJM Construction, Winnipeg
Under renovation since 2009, the Evergreen Basic Needs
Building did not have the option of closing for the winter
with so many people in need of the facilities. It is a
non-profit organization that provides food, clothing and
household items to clients in the community requiring short
term assistance. It was decided that the building would
be insulated from the interior, not the exterior as originally
planned, so it could remain in operation until spring when
the veneer and cladding could be installed. To avoid the
possibility of a double vapour barrier within the wall
assembly, Bakor VP160 was identified as an ideal
solution.
The global economy is recovering some from cyclical lows, but economic growth has
been slower and more erratic than a typical economic recovery on high levels of
public sector spending and debt, that has reduced credit availability to the private
sector, slowed job growth and depressed consumer confidence. Inflation is
becoming a worry and we are seeing considerable price increases in the products we
purchase along with increased lead times due to capacity reductions by our suppliers
over the last few years. There are some signs of economic improvement in our US
and Canada markets with improved residential activity from a low base, but
commercial markets remain generally slow on this continued economic uncertainty.
We don’t have much control over the global economy so we just focus on what we can control and that is our
mission of Helping Build Your Success by being both Your Source for construction materials and
Your Resource for the know-how and problem solving that come through 56 years of dedicated service to the
industry. We now have 23 locations across the upper Midwest United States and western Canada. We stock
a wide range of products including geotextiles, erosion control, concrete and masonry chemicals, accessories
and repair products, insulated concrete forms, EIFS systems, brick, Cultured Stone, natural stone, fireplaces,
highway restoration materials, waterproofing, insulation, roofing, cladding and much, much more. We
continue to enhance our product offering through the addition of new products and vendors. Be sure to visit
our newly redesigned website for new and improved access to both customer specific information and updates
on new products, upcoming activities, and events.
Thank you for your past business and we look forward to serving you in the future. As always, tell us how
BW NEWS IN BRIEF
Construction Materials Price Volatility
Price change notices from manufacturers are a normal part of business but this year they seem more pronounced.
You are seeing price changes from BW and others in geotextiles, Styrofoam, chemicals, and steel products that
probably have some of you alarmed. In addition, there are shortages of things like acrylic polymers used in
coatings and paint for line markings. Some manufacturers are also requiring earlier ship dates to hold prices.
This may cause us asking our customers to take delivery on items in order to get the prices you were quoted and
want. Please give us as much advance notice as possible on product needs to help us serve you better.
EIFS Coatings - Shortages Possible
BASF brought to our attention an announcement by Dow Chemical in early May of an industry wide shortage of
acrylic acids and monomers, these chemicals are not unique to EIFS but are incorporated in all paints and coatings
technology. BASF will be substituting dry base coat for wet base coats in all cases to help solve this supply issue.
Freight and Trucking Issues
Current economic conditions have made truck availability a big issue during the past year. With fewer carriers in
business and less trucks on the road, we’ve been seeing loads take a week or more to find a truck that used to
take a few hours, and the rates for the trucks that we do line up are higher than we have historically seen. We
expect rush loads will become increasingly expensive, and hazmat loads even more so. Our best suggestion is to
work with us on your product needs so we can give our carriers as much advanced notice as possible in order to
get the best rates and service level.
FEATURED PROJECT
Enmax Bank Stabilization
Calgary, AB
PRODUCTS USED: Pyramat TRM
GENERAL CONTRACTOR: Chief Construction Company, Calgary
SUB CONTRACTOR: ASI Arboricultural Services, Calgary
ENGINEER: Westhoff Engineering, Calgary
Rip Rap was installed along the banks of the river along with live
willow staking to promote bank vegetation and fish spawning. The
project is situated in a high-flow area, so ASI installed Pyramat Turf
Reinforcement Matting to protect against the varying degrees of
flooding it can expect. The challenge was to incorporate the TRM
while maintaining a natural look to the area. Tree stumps and logs
that were originally removed from the area were replaced along with
the planting of new vegetation. Once grown in, the area will support
a natural vegetated habitat for wildlife while being extremely erosion
resistant.
GEOTALK
ScourStop’s Versatile Applications
The ScourStop transition mat is one of Brock
White’s most versatile erosion control materials.
This mechanically anchored mat enables vegetative
growth over highly erosive areas like stormwater
pipe outlets, curb outfalls, over-flow structures and
shorelines. As a ‘green’ alternative to rip rap,
ScourStop not only limits erosion but looks great
as well. Here are a couple of examples of different
applications. For more examples showing various
application photos and information, visit
FEATURED PRODUCT
Heusker HaTelit Paving Grid
The HaTelit paving grid by Heusker is a
flexible, high-strength asphalt reinforcement
solution. Made from bitumen coated polyester
with an ultra-lightweight nonwoven attached to
one side, HaTelit distributes tensile forces over
a large area, preventing reflective cracking and
reinforcing the joints. It is also typically used as
an overlay to old concrete roads and as asphalt
reinforcement in hydraulic engineering and
landfill applications.
It features high temperature stability and
long-term dynamic load-carrying capability.
A road reinforced with suitably designed and
properly installed HaTelit will remain crack free
for many years.
FEATURED PROJECTS
Valley Zoo, Edmonton, AB
INSTALLATION: Castle Rock Contracting, Edmonton, AB
The Valley Zoo in Edmonton was faced with a dilemma over a 1,500 sq. ft.
observation deck. Situated on top of the zoo’s zebra exhibit, the deck required
re-staining and replacement of 20 to 30 rotting boards every spring. When it came
time to completely re-do the deck, a concrete slab over a Styrofoam base was
originally specified. That’s when Kevin Engelking, City of Edmonton Structural
Inspector, recalled a seminar he had attended at Brock White about VAST
Composite Pavers. The recycled pavers offer very good slip resistance, durability
to withstand freeze-thaw cycles, and weigh 3x less than concrete – all ideal
qualities for roof applications.
Though the material costs with VAST are higher, Castle Rock’s Lee Wilburn noted
the savings in labour cost due to ease of material handling and cutting, as well as
alignment and spacing thanks to VAST’s patented installation grid system. The
Valley Zoo is so pleased with the results, they are already testing VAST in walkways
and other applications.
Heritage Park, Calgary AB
MASON: Pockar Masonry, Calgary AB
Brock White can be your source for custom natural stone, like what now adorns
the Canadian Pacific Railway Station at Heritage Park in Calgary. The park is a
living historical village and the stone sourced by Brock White adds to the park’s
classic, timeless feel. Pockar Masonry of Calgary applied the limestone and
sandstone which had been cut by Gillis Quarries in Winnipeg.
